Armatrading, Joan - In These Times Lyrics

These are the times
Tears fill the back of your eyes
These are the times
The birds migrate
Across the skies

These are the times
What hope you had you forget
These wicked times
You're bound to feel
All sanity is lost

In these times everyone needs love
In these times do you pray to God
In these times everyone needs comfort
And would welcome a hand to hold
Compassion is the fire
That burns the hurt
That pains the soul
And though my eyes are so polluted
By the sight of lost desires
I can see you standing by

This is my fear
That distance will come between us
And it could mean nothing
Nothing
To get from here to there

We own the world
And everything that's in it
Let our love shine
Like glistening raindrops
Resting on a rose

In these times celebrate our love
In these times let's be thankful of
All the days we can spend together
And I'm happy to hold your hand
Your passion is the food
That feeds the hunger in my heart
And now my eyes are clearly open
No more longing for the past
Now I have you in these times

In these times everyone needs love
In these times do you pray to God
In these times everyone needs comfort
And would welcome a hand to hold
Your passion is the fire
That burns the hurt
That pains the soul
And though my eyes are so polluted
By the sight of lost desires
Good to have you in these times

Lynn Landry same. -:) shifts my sometimes tired and cynical perspective, to compassion for self and others via love- now.

    L.... L....

I do the same. I find comfort in this song as well. It captures it all. It clearly shows hope and the world is surely in need of hope these days.

I agree. This song is just as relevant today, in 2020 as it was back in 2003, when it was first released.

Saw Joan in Warrington, UK, last night, she played this with the same images on a screen on stage - the word stunning doesn't do this song justice, and it's much better live, much, much better. She's still out there, touring, go and see her!

    K.... J....

This is her last world tour.

  34. G.... ....

Just discovering Joan Armatrading although I've known about her forever. What rock have I been under??

  35. s.... ....

    W O W !

  36. G.... L....

@janmagkar : Me too! I have been following Jaan's music since @1978-79 when she first appeared with ALL THE WAY FROM AMERICA on Don Kirshner's ROCK CONCERT/in the U.S. I read a MUSICIAN magazine article from 20+ years ago where she was quoted as saying that many of her songs do NOT come from her PERSONAL experiences, but from "snippets of conversation" she's overheard/3rd person persspective. As a non-songwriter, I can really appreciate that.

  37. T.... S....

    what a beautiful song...

  38. j.... ....

Thanks Joan for a truly inspirational song, especially in these times.....
I have loved your music and songs forever......eternally a fan.

  39. g.... ....

    one word-amazing!

  40. A.... M....

Really, the job of a musician is to bring us all together to unite in something we relate to and most of us songwriters are doing this because we really want to change the world, not just because we quite like singing. I'm glad Joan is amongst them. If you like this, you might also like the song "Has The Whole World Come Undone?" by Abi Moore - just search in Google to find it!

  41. s.... ....

@bosyeux2 , though your statement is all too true, I believe what others are saying here is that if human suffering in this or any future time can be alleviated only compassion and love will accomplish it. Therefore, we believe that this song and/or anything that can move us to express these things toward our fellowkind need to be kept constant. Would you have us or would you yourself withhold compassion from the suffering simply because it has existed in other times? I think not.

  42. b.... ....

it's an interesting song, but do you all truly believe these times are so different than others? death and destruction have always been hovering in the trees. human history is replete with such fragility--it just tends to get lost in the mythologizing.

  43. j.... b....

ive seen joan about 3 times joan is fantastic

  44. j.... b....

ive seen joan in concert about 3 times joan is fantastic

  45. l.... ....

I do believe Joan Armatrading is on earth for some strong messages and to bring consolation to broken hearts with a very warm and nice voice. Thanks for the post.

  46. B.... H....

I keep hoping that this song will continue. I don't want it to stop.

  47. p.... k....

    Wonderul upload. Thanks for sharing.

  48. t.... ....

No doubt many are feeling tremendoius sorrow these past few years. Joan does a fantastic job with this one, something we can all relate to, some more than others. Thumbs up, and a Fav.

  49. B.... N....

I have always listened throughout the years but now the serious progression in age has also brought along much more qualitative productions. Thanx, Joan.

In these times when Wall Street needs to be destroyed. Otherwise it will destroy America. Only one thing more dangerous than a standing army. "BANKS". Benjamin Franklin knew what he was talking about. Gold and Silver the currency under the Constitution not digits on a computer.

  51. L.... B....

I love this. . . thank you, Mystic Drummer, for sending this amazing song to me!

  52. J.... P....

    So beautiful and touching. Encore!

  53. h.... ....

So powerful in content, this song is truly beautiful.

  54. D.... B....

One of the great pop artists of her generation, totally unrecogonized and undervalued

  55. P.... T....

This song is so wonderful. Looking so much forward to see Joan in Århus, Denmark in May. Can't wait - hope she'll play this gem.

  56. M.... S....

excellent song and video, made me cry. Joan is the greatest.

  57. T.... D....

People should eat, sleep, drink, breathe and live every waking moment in this song.

  58. V.... R....

Yes those are wonderful words and I thank you for them and for the most part I agree with them. Personally my faith is based in something less amorphus than the winds, the sea and the eyes of children. It is based in the infinate act love that is the Cross of Christ where They not only observed and sorrowed over our cruelty to one another, They took them onto Themselves that we might be redeemed to Them and to on another.

  59. N.... t....

Yes, I'm spiritual but not religious. In all the teachings of those touched by and sent by Our Creator there's beauty and lessons to learn. However I reject the words of those who claim to be of any faith, then twist it to promote their personal hates and intolerance. I feel the power of Our Creator in the lifegiving sea, hear Their voice in the winds and see Their Love for us in the eyes of children. But I cannot begin to imagine Their sorrow at the cruelties that we commit against one another

  60. V.... R....

Absolutely agree with you. Are you a person of faith in someone or something beyond the natural?

  61. N.... t....

I place my faith in those who live their faith. Some call themselves a Christian or Jew or Muslim, yet only do so when others are looking and turn away from those in needthe rest of the time. IMO a person can be a good & have faith in Our Creator without manmade trappings of fine buildings & such Maybe it's just me, but until we can learn to see past the outside to the soul within, see that we are bound together by something greater than language or nation . We'll just keep hurting one another

  62. V.... R....

Something just struck me as I watched this. There are 4 people who are often portayed as symbols of hope "in these times" and this video shows them all Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Mother Theresa, and Nelson Mandala. What struck me is that the one common thing for all these people was they were/are people of faith.

  63. S.... O....

Yes, an amazing song, thanks for uploading.
"We own the world, and everything that's in it."

  64. b.... ....

Nobody is cooler than Joan Armatrading. Thanks for all the great music.

  65. t.... ....

We desparately need this song to be re-released in these times !

  66. r.... s....

How wonderful to hear these songs again!

  67. P.... R....

    chills down my spine

  68. R.... M....

  69. b.... ....

It's from the 'Lovers speak' album - the new Cd is 'Into the blues' - both fantastic.

  70. S.... O....
