Arlo Guthrie - Patriot's Dream Lyrics

Living now, here but for fortune
Placed by fate's mysterious schemes
Who'd believe that we're the ones asked to
Try to rekindle the patriot's dreams

Arise sweet destiny, time runs short
All of your patience has heard their retort
Hear us now, for alone we can't seem
To try to rekindle the patriot's dreams

Can you hear the words being whispered
All along the American stream
Tyrants freed, the just are imprisoned
Try to rekindle the patriot's dreams

Ah, but perhaps too much is being asked of too few
You and your children with nothing to do
Hear us now, for alone we can't seem
To try to rekindle the patriot's dreams

this song should have 20 million views

Maybe in the wake of last week's moving demonstrations this sounds more like a dream that could still come true, rather than an elegy for the lost dreams of previous generations. Good song.

It is a beautiful and sad song, because we've lost the Patriots Dream. Thinking about our recent whistleblowers this morning, Ed Snowden, Thomas Drake, Chelsea Manning, and John Kiriakou to name a few, made me think about this song of Arlo's. can't rekindle the dream of freedom alone. They set an amazing example of courage and commitment to a real democracy. But they alone can't do what our country needs now. We need fulltime citizens who will give up consumerism, internet, TV, and sports distractions. The current struggle to get health care for all Americans is an example of how citizens confronting Congress can have an effect on our government. Hopefully we'll stop Trump-McConnell-Ryancare and go on to get Improved Medicare for All: everybody in, nobody out. By taking to the street and by refusing to cooperate with Muslim bans or the scapegoating of immigrants or people of color we can scare the government back to democracy, away from militarism, wars, and forcing people at home and abroad to generate more profit for the 1% while destroying the Earth in the process. We can do it. As Arlo puts it- "Who'd believe that we're the ones asked
To try to rekindle the patriot's dreams"
