Arlo Guthrie - Last Night I Had The Strangest Dream Lyrics

Last night I had the strangest dream
I ever dreamed before
I dreamed the world had all agreed
To put an end to war
I dreamed I saw a mighty room
The room was filled with men
And the paper they were signing said
They'd never fight again

And when the papers all were signed
And a million copies made
They all joined hands and bowed their heads
And grateful prayers were prayed
And the people in the streets below
Were dancing round and round
And guns and swords and uniforms
Were scattered on the ground

Last night I had the strangest dream
I ever dreamed before
I dreamed the world had all agreed
To put an end to war

If only. How can anyone truly believe in any god and still wage war?

This song expresses my greatest wish.  Heartfelt thanks to Dana McCurdy's dad.  Peace

    If only!

I'm proud to say that my dad wrote this song, and I think that Arlo's version is my all time favorite recording of it by another artist. There's so much heart in this performance!

Dana, I'm proud of your dad too. Just unhappy that it's not a global anthem.

One of my favorite songs, ever!

Dana, I am so moved by your comment. I was just about to look up who wrote this seemingly timeless classic song which I have heard many times over the years. I also searched for it here and saw the many versions and listened to John Denver then Pete Seeger then this by Arlo. So this is the one I've liked best, close to Pete and possibly Simon and Garfunkel which I heard years ago. Seeing that it is your favorite gives me a sense of authenticity, though I guess I now have built up in my mind what I feel it should sound like (as many probably do). I am lucky enough to sing and play guitar so I hope to keep that going. Thanks again to you and your dad.

Dana, I just learned two more amazing facts about your dad from Wikipedia. First, it says this song has been translated into 76 languages! Second, there is this incredible statement about how kids from East Germany sang your father's song as the Berlin Wall fell and Tom Brokaw had the NBC-TV cameras cover it.

Have you heard the Swedish version of it? Most Swedes (at least of my generation) has sung this in school many many times. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTvvl9dj03Q

    I love it ...
