Arlo Guthrie - I Could Be Singing Lyrics

I could be singing forever
I guess you could say I'm in love
The universe is getting together
You know that I can't say it enough
You and your friends have a party
Welcome your heavenly Dad

Remember the guy by the water
We seen walkin' round on the air
He went and learned for a quarter
He knew that you could see him there
You take your friends to the ocean
Walk on the sand if you can

Spiro stepped out on the door step
He spoke like he had something to say
He said, "I don't want to hear anybody"
I guess he's going to be that way

Even all the elephants hear you, Spiro
Would you believe it at last?
Nobody wants to be near you
The new world is coming that fast

They're beating on you in Chicago
They're picking you up on the coast
They're knocking you off in Ohio
They like sending you to war the most

When will you get it together
Everybody in this land
Helping out your brothers and sisters
Everyone must understand

I could be singing forever
I guess you could say I'm in love
The new world is coming together
You know that I can't say it enough
You and your friends have a party
Welcome your heavenly Dad

Washington County had a profound effect on me and this song struck so deep. I went out shopping for a piano, stuck with the guitar. More portable.

This is very much like Harrison's Living In The Material World album music, only 3 years before it! (I suppose George's All Things Must Pass was recorded 1970, but not before, but this one is more like Living In The Material World material [pun discovered], so well done Arlo! Good lyrics in this one too. 5 stars.

Back then, it really seemed like it was all coming together in a beautiful way. What happened??

What did happen? I wish I knew. It's still in my heart at 68. Now it just makes me cry. Thanks for asking Laura, it means more than you know.

Loved this song more than four decades but, being a Brit, have no idea what the line 'Even all the elephants hear you, Spiro' is about. Anyone help?

Good taste, Beth. There's a transcendence about this album. So much hope and optimism. And Arlo has never lost that hope. Love him so much.

Steve Goddard what a humanitarian he is! Yes, this is one of my favorite albums, definitely! You Brits have Peter Green! I am reacquainted with early Mac...68-70...I purchased 5 cds a month ago with Sir Green...can't get enough. Good day ♡♡♡
