Arlo Guthrie - Hobo's Lullaby Lyrics

Go to sleep you weary hobo
Let the towns drift slowly by
Can't you hear the steel rail humming
That's a hobo's lullaby

Do not think about tomorrow
Let tomorrow come and go
Tonight you're in a nice warm boxcar
Safe from all the wind and snow

I know the police cause you trouble
They cause trouble everywhere
But when you die and go to heaven
You won't find no policemen there

I know your clothes are torn and ragged
And your hair is turning grey
Lift your head and smile at trouble
You'll find happiness some day

So go to sleep you weary hobo
Let the towns drift slowly by
Don't you feel the steel rail humming
That's a hobo's lullaby

Has the cello been added in the remastering? It's extremely effective. There's no mention who the cellist is: just a session musician who gets no credit. That's almost as sad as the song.

Those days are returning there here

Go to sleep you weary hobo
Let the towns drift slowly by
Listen to the steel rails hummin'
    That's the hobo's lullaby

    Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh

    Do not think 'bout tomorrow
    Let tomorrow come and go
Tonight you're in a nice warm boxcar
Safe from all that wind and snow

I know the police cause you trouble
    They cause trouble everywhere
But when you die and go to Heaven
    You'll find no policemen there

know your clothes are torn and ragged
And your hair is turning gray
Lift your head and smile at trouble
You'll find peace and rest someday

So go to sleep you weary hobo
Let the towns drift slowly by
Listen to the steel rails hummin'
    That's a hobo's lullaby

    Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh

As babies they would fall asleep to my heartbeat as I sang them this song, and years later living on the road my daughter would ask "sing me the Hobo song Dad"

My favourite album of all time, but all I have is a tape of a uni friend's tape of her sister's record because it was deleted before I'd heard it. I asked about it a few years later, hoping it had been re-released on CD; it had, then been deleted the previous month! I'm still finding my way round a computer, but hope eventually to have a Hobo's Lullaby list, in the album order (if I can remember it ,as I've had no cassette player for years!). Then I'll need speakers for my ancient 2nd-hand laptop, then IT will pack in! Some things are just too special to be easy.

  12. W.... B....

Inspired by Arlo's rendition, I sang this to both my kids as a lullaby.

Probably one of the strongest bonds I have with each kid...

    Thanks to Arlo and Woodie...

Don't you feel those steel rails hummin'...

I sang it to my son, too. He's loved good music ever since.

    W.... B....

Puts me to sleep when I sing it too.

    W.... B....

Sang it to two generations-my sons, then my granddaughters.

  13. P.... A....

such a unique and fine voice Arlo had this one brings tears to my eyes

  14. E.... K....

  16. B.... J....

A favorite song of mine for many years.  I agree with crusinscmp, nice job with photos. Thanks!

  17. c.... ....

    Nice job with the photos.
I've often thought the line "tonight you're in a nice warm box car" should have been "tonight your in a nice dry box car".
    Thanks for up loading.

    c.... ....

+crusinscamp It is right the first way. You're is You are Your is a possessive noun.

    c.... ....

+Robert Wells I believe the difference he intended was "nice WARM box car," to "nice DRY box car."

  18. R.... S....

Having Woody as a father; that's a hard act to follow. Arlo sings this beautifully.
