Arlo Guthrie - Garden Song Lyrics

[CHORUS:]
Inch by inch, row by row
Gonna make this garden grow
Gonna mulch it deep and low
Gonna make it fertile ground

Inch by inch, row by row
Please bless these seeds I sow
Please keep them safe below
'Till the rain comes tumbling down

Pullin' weeds and pickin' stones
We are made of dreams and bones
Need a place to call my own
'Cause the time is close at hand

Grain for grain, sun and rain
Find my way in nature's chain
Till my body and my brain
Tell the music of the land

[CHORUS]

Plant your rows straight and long
Season with a prayer and song
Mother Earth will make you strong
If you give her loving care

[CHORUS]

[The Anti-Garden Verses:]
Slug by slug, weed by weed
Boy this garden's got me t'd
All the insects come to feed
On my tomato plants

Sunburt face, skined up knees
The kitchen's chocked with zuchinis
I'm shopping at the A&P's
Next time I get the chance
[End of Anti-Garden Verses]

Old crow watching from a tree
He's got his hungry eye on me
In my garden I'm as free
As that feathered thief up there

[CHORUS]

I'm not sure all of us understand this song presented by Arlo Guthrie the way he meant it to be understood. He was arguing against sameness all over the world. We each have our own particular culture. We should not change it to be uniform. You can't solve problems kilometer by kilometer. We have to solve our problems the way we started them: inch by inch. That young 20-year-old failed to understand our history. The uniqueness of each culture.

  14. S.... S....

I shared this with my college math prof. who is from china.

Arlo touches of people who hate gardens. There are people who hate gardens. In 1976 my neighbor come over towards the fence. The first thing he said to me he hated people who had gardens. Guess what? The second week of July 1976 a stranger had come over to my residence. It was the town inspector. He stated that someone reported me for having a garden. He checked the garden and told me there was nothing wrong. I knew it was my neighbor who had a lot of time on his hands to report. The inspector had nothing else to do but to come over my place to check the condition of my garden. During those years I had to watch myself. This S.O.B. neighbor was also finding fault with other neighbors as well. It was not long after they moved. It was a blessing.

  16. S.... C....

I have always loved this song

  23. a.... ....

I'm not a gardener and don't particularly like this song, but I signed on to like this video because it made me laugh and reminded me what a treasure Arlo is.

  24. s.... ....

Haha - heard "Oprah watching from a tree"

  25. B.... N....

Arlo is one of the best. Sometimes I can't stop listening to his music. Also for me, this is the best version of "The Garden Song".

  26. E.... V....

    Arlo. America. (and I'm Canadian)

  27. S.... S....

If there were more folks like Arlo in this world maybe some of our problems could be solved inch-by-inch.

    S.... S....

You Hit the nail on the frog head my friend, wake up america!😉

  28. C.... M....

This has become my favorite version pf this song. Became reintroduced to Arlo just this year by an old friend. He is funny,
talented and a true performer. The last verse completes this true classic which will endure through time! Congrats, Arlo !

  29. N.... L....

I don't think this is the best recording of Garden Song. In general I would say that the one that made it onto Precious Friend is better. But Arlo's discussion on this one (despite being anti metric :-)) and the last verse makes it absolutely worth it. I think everyone has felt like that last verse, the first year or two they started gardening. Especially the first year they grew zucchini.

    N.... L....

I agree. Precious Friends is a great album!

  30. k.... l....

Sorry, but Arlo still cracks me up...after all these years.

    k.... l....

No need to be sorry. You find him funny. Get this! I find him PROFOUND! Honest. These are words to live by... instructions for life. I can't tell you how many times I refer to this song... for my garden, my body, my mind, my spirit, society, our mother Earth. AND he cracks me up too. I love his sense of humor.

    k.... l....

I sing this song every spring as I plant my garden

    k.... l....

@Kelli Kellogg Yes! He was very nice to my whole family a few years ago. Would like to see him again!

  31. E.... P....

I love this song, well I live Arlo too

  32. S.... S....

I remember watching this performance on PBS Channel 11 (Chicago) with my parents when I was a kid. The taped it on a cassette tape. I still have the audio in a box in my basement.

  33. J.... B....

We burned ourselves bad by not adopting Metric measure in the 1970s. Long past time to finish up that job.

  34. D.... Z....

love. this. song I. sing. this song

  35. B.... P....

Love this song.  Thank you for posting

  37. j.... ....

Fantastic, wonderful, and super cool...Thanks for sharing this with us 😇

  38. A.... ....

Sure needed that . Had a good laugh and a few tears. Just came off fb, which is very depressing, full of republican and christian right hate and vitriol, and now I don't feel so bad. Gonna listen to some more Arlo, and thank you for sharing.

    A.... ....

Post some of his music on there to change the vibe.

    A.... ....

What's funny is Arlo is a registered Republican. He says that the world has plenty of Democrats like him and what's needed is more Republicans like him. And yet again, my hat's off to Arlo for making a whole lot of sense and doing so with a delightful tune.

  39. E.... D....

What a joyful song. Love Arlo. 😍

  40. W.... E....

    " "Tomato" plants" ..... hahahahahahahaha...

  41. m.... r....

I saw him onstage right around this same time, and at that performance he got sidetracked by the lyric about the crow.  "Crow's got his hungry eye on me....  How come he's not lookin' at what's in the garden?"  And it led to a new verse explaining how crows knees are skinny and only bend one way, and that would be the best way to incapacitate a crow that tried to eat you.

  42. H.... v....

Love to sing this while working....

  43. J.... T....

I love this so much !

  44. R.... E....

I love this song like breath itself, but I never heard Arlo do it till now! Arlo, thank you so much! Especially for adding the word "mulch" to the lyrics. Mulch is how Mother Nature fertilizes, every time.

    R.... E....

    Rin Eric hello

  45. G.... W....

I think I'm in love!  Love the song and the rant!  Very cute and funny.

  46. B.... D....

Arlo: We went to Summer Music Camp together in 1962 in the Berkshires. What an incredible summer at a moment in history that you and I will always remember. I want to acknowledge the wonderful influence of  your wonderful, talented, and loving mother -- Marjorie. We were just  young teenagers. However it was a formative experience for all of us.  It is wonderful how you developed into an artist. As you could remember you could hardly sing in those days. What a difference a few years made! Thank you for your music and work in reminding us all - as did your great father  the basis of American democracy.

    B.... D....

Great alternative verse at 7:30. "Everyone needs a different kind of inspiration". I love how he looked in the 80s.

  57. f.... ....

this is a good representation of this time period. and how fear and projection , are one of many fear driven behaviors

  58. s.... ....

I LOVE this segment and song! I used to have it on VHS, but it deteriorated very badly.  I am so glad to find it again here -- THANKS!

  59. c.... ....

Nobody on the planet can tell a story the way Arlo tells a story.

  60. M.... D....

I just love when he stops in the middle of a song to tell a story.

  61. e.... ....

in true Mainer form, I get terribly excited by anything that comes from here =)

  62. s.... ....

I just saw Arlo in a solo concert two weeks ago and I hoped he'd do this song so I cold yell out "Hail to the inch". He is definitely carrying on the storyteller tradition. Thanks for posting this!

  65. C.... L....

What a delight! I had no idea Arlo was sooo funny! Thank you thank you!

  66. T.... P....

Arlo was one of the few redeeming things about the eighties! He was one of the last remaining torch bearers so to speak! I so love the message of this song! Thanks, Arlo! Peace!
