Think Zappa, Rundgren & Bowie all melded into one but with the missing crucial ingredient...Ariel Pink himself and his unparalleled genius. AP just upends the tables on any comparisons with his distinctive beautiful and/or schizophrenic musical and lyrical compositions and wanderings. Other than Rundgren, AP is the only artist I know who can "borrow" the sound(s) from various genres and actually make music far superior to the artists of that time, who defined those genres/sounds...and then far surpass it soulfully and/or experimentally...and most importantly keep it distinctive. I wish I could write like this. Just blown away.

He is clearly the best pop artist of the 21st century. Yeah, I know music isn't a competition, but fuck it; I'm declaring that three albums would easily make the all-decade top 50 list (or the "albums to hear before you die" list): Before Today, Pom Pom and Dedicated to Bobby Jameson. Hard to do these days when everything's mostly recycled or inconsistent. And yet, he's done it three times in a decade, much like Rundgren did in the 1970s with his amazing streak. BTW don't get me wrong, Mature Themes is solid, too. But damn, those three albums need to be enshrined in a museum. Glass case with laser censors...can't forget the guards!
