Aretha Franklin - Drown In My Own Tears Lyrics
It brings big tears into my eyes
When I begin, when I begin to realize
That I've cried so much, oh, since you've been gone;
I guess I'll drown in, drown in my own tears...
These tears of mine, these tears are runnin' wild...
And if you don't think... if you don't think that you'll be home soon,
Baby, I'm gonna drown... oh, yeah... in my own tears...
Here without you (you),
I get so lonely and I sure get blue (blue), yes, I do...
It seems to keep rainin' (rainin'),
Rainin', and raining more and more, and more and more... (More and more...)
Oh, here without you, baby,
I sure get lonely and I get so blue,
More, and more, and more, and more, and more...
Oh, why can't you? (You...) Why can't you...
Why can't you come on home? (You come on home...)
Because I don't wanna be, I don't want to be here all alone...
Listen! if you don't think... (If! You! Don't!)
If you don't think that you're coming home soon (You don't think!), like this evening,
I believe I'm gonna drown (drown...) this morning...
I tell you that I'm gonna... (drown...) gonna drown this evening...
And oh! (Drown...) It's sure gonna get bad in the midnight hour.
Don't let him let me! (Drown...) Don't let him let me,
Don't let him let me! Don't let him let me
Drown (goin' down...), in my own tears...
I don't wanna drown (drown...) in my own tears...
Oh, I'm gonna drown... yeah, in my...
Oh, in my own tears, tears, my tears, tears!
Oh! Don't let him do it, don't let him do it;
I don't wanna drown in my own tears...

........what wonderful phrasing.......endless talent.....
One of my favorite songs on this album...but, that's a tough call because the whole album is so fantastic.
Aretha, you better sang the song. Oh yes.
Sing aunt Ree!!!
This woman will always be in my heart, nobody can sing like this.
LORD HAVE A MERCY ON ME..
The best recording ever of this song!
Ray Charles did it just a lil bit better in my opinion but this is still very good.
...and so much better in full radial stereo; shame on Rhino for keeping it suppressed in favor of mono
wings for the soul
Does it get any better than "Here without you...(you).. I get lonely and I sho get blue". Gatdam! I don't think it would be a slight to all the other great blues singers ( the list is mighty long) to say that Aretha is every bit the blues singer as any of them. She really made me believe that she was going through some serious changes with the men in her life and it definitely came out whenever she graced us with her blues songs. Seems like after about 1973 she stopped doing blues songs, which was our loss. But when you have as vast amount of material like she had maybe she just wasn't feeling those kind of blues she was dealing with during the early part of her tenure with Atlantic Records. But I digress..Rest well Ms. Ree
Rest up

Sleep peacefully Queen Aretha. :'(
She captured my heart forever when I was a young lad in the late 1960's...
I was ten when this came out. From beginning to end this song was powerful to my 10 year old ears, but ESPECIALLY when she go to, " it seems to keep raining, and raining, and raining more and more and more, oh!!!! Hear without you baby!!!! It didn't get any better than that. I love you Aretha . God bless you!
I love all songs on this album. Used to play it over n over when I was very young. Aretha Franklin and Etta James are my fav female artists.
One of my all-time favorites by Aretha! Cissy, Erma, and Carolyn are serving up some "Caravans" realness in the background! Y'all Betta sing!
Thats the Great Sweet Inspirations
Long live the Queen my mother named me after her and I always tried to sing like her but there is only one Aretha.
How nice of your mother to name you with such a beautiful name!
Dinah was known as he Queen of the Blues, so was uniquely qualified to sing this song.
Another version of this song worthy of a listen is the one I like the best, by the late Great
Dinah Washington !

Just for the record,This song was originally recorded by Lula Reed with the Sonny Thompson band
Good Info because I was wondering who wrote it. I have everything Aretha since she was 20 ...on cassette. Never heard this...unless I skipped through it all these years
Etta James does a fantastic version of this song..
" Drown in My OwnTears", is a blues song written by Henry Glover...Recorded in 1951 by Lula Reed & the Sonny Thompson band.. In 1956, Ray Charles recorded the most popular version..
jam brown thank you for the proper info
This and Ray Charles' versions are the best renditions.
MzJanuary Listen to Eva Cassidy and Chuck Brown's version, it's damn good too.
Eva Cassidy sing the damn song like she wrote it. If she had lived she would have kicked ass all over the joint. 4 sho
Great great song. We all have legit opinions as to offers best rendition _____ having said that ___ I love Ray ___ my hero ___ I love the queen the best ever ___ BUT. JOHNNY TAYLOR knocks this out of the park ____
What can you say
You can say Thank you for giving me ears to hear the Queen of Soul at her most soulful. I mean, play it again....and again.
My daddy used to play this album religiously. These were songs that touched the soul. I used to cry listening to this. Thank God my tears are now full of joy! Youngsters (Lord that sounded old) but they have no idea what real music sounds like anymore! Its only a few.. but these lyrics! Just listen,,,
nailed it
Terra Lyn holy moly true words🖒🏼
This was the one!!!

KRASA....
Don Everly has lost his brother, Phil. For their family and them, this is a good song.
One of The Greatest Definitive Performances Of All Time from Her Royal Highness The Queen Herself-Aretha!!! All Hail The Queen!!! Uniquely qualified to wear The Crown!!!
Absolutely agreed.
"These tears of mine.. these tears keep running wild.. and if ya don't think.." I mean just wow!
Increíble!!!!
Detroit meets Newark. Cissy Drinkard Houston and the Franklin sisters doing the background big time.
one of the reasons the " never loved a man " album was such a success, was the background singers. Cissy Houston joined Erma and Carolyn franklin on this song and track 9. The Franklin sisters did the background on all other tracks. If you listen to the tracks that Erma and Carolyn are by themselves, it sounds like there are four instead of two women. they sang their butts off.
the original is from lula reed and sonny thompson
I don't care how many people cover this in the future.....nobody messing with this like Aretha. She owned this joint and sung the brakes off this piece.
DaOrigTruthSeeker yes she did.
And, made the piano walk down the street and bring you back yo change from the store. Lol
@a c : yes
The original song is from Ray Charles, so...
Also doing this song justice, Aretha Franklin's Godmother -- the late great Miss Dinah Washington.
wonderful
only aretha can sing this song

Those background girls be on it. Aretha's version of this song is the best of all i have ever heard. She makes it feel like a testimony. The soul survivers are satisfied up in here.
GIVE THE DRUMMER SOME !
lordxerak: Bernard Purdie.
And don't neglect "As good to me as I am to you"-A real classic!!!
One of the deepest Blues ever put to wax or 8track or casette or CD or Ipod. This is why they call Aretha The Queen. You don't get that title easily or without merit. Nobody else but HRH Aretha. Dig Dr. Feelgood, Goin' Down Slow, It Ain't Fair, I Never Loved A Man, Change Gonna Come. "Nuff said. The music speaks for itself.
