Aretha Franklin - Cold, Cold Heart Lyrics

I've tried so hard, my dear, to show
That you're my every dream
And yet you're afraid each thing I do
Is just some evil scheme

A memory from your lonesome past
Keeps us so far apart
Why can't I free your doubtful mind
And melt your cold heart?

Another love before my time
Made your heart sad and blue
And so my heart, my heart is paying now
For all of the things I didn't do

In anger unkind words are said
And these are, these are the things that make the teardrops start
Why, oh why can't I free your doubtful mind?
Ooh honey, I'd really like to melt your cold, cold heart

Why, oh why can't I free your doubtful mind?
And I really, really like to melt your [?]

Aretha Franklin Cold, Cold Heart Comments
  1. B.... E....

The Queen like always is awesome

  2. T.... ....

Is it just my over-active musical imagination or was someone channeling Ketty Lester and "Love Letters Straight From Your Heart" when they came up with this arrangement of ol' Hank's tune?

  3. T.... L....

This song is from The album “ Unforgettable ,” a tribute album she did to the great Dane Washington in 1964. Originally it was a song by country legend Hank Williams.😊

  4. D.... H....

Hank was good for country music but it all depends on what moves ya. This moves ya. What a voice she had. I could listen to this all day.

  22. D.... ....

Nobody can sing like this woman. She is just a unique singer. She ministers to the soul when she sings. She believes the words to the song and they become alive and a part of her and the listener.

    D.... ....

Mariah Carey's ear infected fans think she's better, lol.

  23. M.... D....

    this is fantastic

  24. B.... C....

I love Aretha Franklin, but not on this song.....

    B.... C....

@Bill Carr You are Welcome!   Actually I have had to re-listen to the version that Hank Williams, Jr. sang, so as to understand exactly what was OFF about Aretha's rendition of the song.  Hank Williams, Sr. wrote the song to a 4/4 beat, which was the typical Country-Western beat in those days.  Aretha's accompanists are playing a ( 3/4 ) beat, which throws the rhythm completely off.  Also, Aretha's is attempting to use Gospel Phrasing to a Country/Western Blues.  That interpretation was just NOT GOING TO WORK.  So let's say THEY  needed more Rehearsal??!!

    B.... C....

Thanks for that analysis......Aretha does little wrong in my book, but in this case, "mistakes were made" !

    B.... C....

@unclealand Now that I have listened to this again one year since my original comment, my mind has taken a different view on the subject.
    1. I was incorrect about the typical rhythm for most C&W music of that era. In fact it was the Waltz beat, 3/4 time, not 4/4 tempo, which I had thought.
    2. The automatic drum in the background of Aretha's rendition is beating out exactly a 3/4 waltz tempo without any variation at all. Hank Williams wrote it for a 3/4 beat, and that is how he sang it, Waltz tempo.
    3. The Organist, sounds like a live accompanist, is trying to improvise to support Aretha's interpretations; which we all know that Aretha's singing was emotional and very unpredictable. So the Organist was not keeping up with the rhythm set by the automatic drum beat.
    4. Aretha's voice was beautiful, as usual, but she sounded as though she was unsure when to sing, when to be silent. Gospel is usually 4/4, and Aretha's usual beat was 4/4.
    5. There were three (3) different beats going on at the same time in this one gig, the singer, the organist, and the drummer.
Nobody was on the same page. Clearly they had not rehearsed this one before trying to record it..
Don't blame Hank Williams for this!!

    B.... C....

@LOTTIE TUNES   You're a rarity.  You know what you're writing about and you're eloquent.  Nice to run into someone like you on YouTube where that is seldom the case.

    B.... C....

@unclealand Thanks for the compliment. It made me listen to the recording again, just to be sure of what I think I meant.
In fact, I realized that not just three (3) parties helped to mix up this gig; but add the pianist, which is number four (4), doing his own thing.
They must have been enjoying the Scotch!!!

  25. P.... L....

    Sang by Dinah Washington also...

  26. b.... a....

someone of aretha's standing doing a Hank song, shows how great Hank was and how great country music is

  27. V.... S....

    What a wonderful singer..

  28. j.... a....

This is such a souful version incredible done by Aretha and i think this is the best version!
    That voice.

  29. S.... G....

    oh wow! so beautiful!

  30. J.... B....

    I agree 100%

  31. s.... s....

so pretty love the old school days

  32. S.... A....

    HERMOSA

  33. T.... G....

This version is good. However Hank's version is beyond comparison, as is Hank himself. Hank Williams is a true American hero. Some might argue that Roy Acuff is the King of Country, but I would not hesitate for a second to give Hank Williams that title.

    T.... G....

after reading your comment I went to listen to Hank's version of this tune . I listened for about 20 second's and went right back to Aretha's version. Aretha's is simply Superb!!!

    T.... G....

    Hank the racist?

  34. M.... ....

That is such a racist comment!
