Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #4 (7 Kettles) Lyrics

I am waitin' 'til I don't know when,
cause I'm sure it's gonna happen then.
Time keeps creepin' through the neighborhood,
killing old folks, wakin' up babies
just like we knew it would.

All the neighbors are startin' up a fire,
burning all the old folks the witches and the liars.
My eyes are covered by the hands of my unborn kids,
but my heart keeps watchin'
through the skin of my eyelids.

They say a watched pot won't ever boil,
well I closed my eyes and nothin' changed,
just some water getting hotter in the flames.

It's not a lover I want no more,
and it's not heaven I'm pining for,
but there's some spirit I used to know,
that's been drowned out by the radio!

They say a watched pot won't ever boil,
you can't raise a baby on motor oil,
just like a seed down in the soil
you gotta give it time

Arcade Fire Neighborhood #4 (7 Kettles) Comments
  1. Bob Berch

This brilliant song encouraged me to keep the guitar squeaks on my own recording

  2. Saturn SAL

    Aquí por El conticinio.... Agúndez

  3. DillyDyson007

This whole album is a truly great piece of music. Theres not 10 or 11 songs, or a concept being played out, this whole collection of songs which make up an album is a work of art. Thank you could never do my gratitude justice, but, thank you.

  4. Cole Freeman

Reminds me of goodbye blue sky

  5. Robert Hemfelt

My all time favorite Arcade Fire song. It is a truly understated work in both their catalogue and in general. The lyrics, the textures, the vocal delivery, they're all phenomenal. The suspended 2's and 4's string layers give the entire song a feeling of constantly floating down from somewhere. Such a large ensemble all playing at once to produce such a soft final product is truly fantastic.

  6. jacob robledo

    I'm not crying, you're crying

  7. Deivy José

I'm sorry but I don't find this band music good

  8. Moises Monroy

It´s me or this whole album its a conceptual one? I mean in Tunnels talks about Snow covering the Neighbourhood and in Power Out talks about kids dying in the snow and being in complete darkness, just like in Une Annee Sans Lumiere where at least for me its the story of a forbbiden love, and here talks about not wanted a lover, like if it had lost everything

  9. Mini Burger

This band manages to describe feelings that seem indescribable

  10. Marie V

All day I had the phrase "a watched pot never boils" in my brain. I listened to this song for the first time tonight because it showed up in my YouTube recommendations. Sometimes algorithms are good.

  11. Sorna Cho

I started listening to this kind of music by hoppipolla.
    That's just about 2 yr's ago
When i was 12 years old.
And I'm 14(15 in s.korea whre i'm born and living)
Surfing youtubes and bandcamps around listening to some post rock or something.
And proud of myself how i found this band.
This musics are kind of music What i was looking for.
The past 2 years were all the progress for this moment.
How i just got to the firat song of this song.
    The tunnel

    Dog Biscuit

Well done mate. For finding this and taking the effort to talk with us, look after yourself please.

  12. stevecw79

I never liked this song when I got the album 1st, years later I love it.

  13. Chrissykitty1999

most of the time, a song makes me want to cry... this song makes me feel like im already crying.

  15. Andrew

Probably one of the most underrated Arcade Fire songs. Easily one of the best cuts from this album.

    rem0

I've come to apreciate it just recently. During the past years I was always in the edge of skipping it (I though it was the most boring of the Neighborhood serie). Altough I can't say I understand it completely, it's certainly magical: "They say a watched pot won't ever boil, / well I closed my eyes and nothin' changed, / just some water getting hotter in the flames"; unbelievable. So yes, maybe the most beautiful song on funeral.

    Johnny Shamrock

    @rem0 It's a great song on a fine album.
Even an old bastard like me loves this album.Best I have heard in a while

  16. brob8479

    best cut on the album

  17. MrBombastic

I could really hear johnny cash covering this song I think it would sound devastating

    Kleatus Kassidy

    MrBombastic I completely agree

  18. db275711

    My new go to band👍

  19. ANDrés Burgos

    I just love this song...

  20. Scott Pettigrew

I did an acoustic cover of this song, thought some people here might like it :)

    https://soundcloud.com/scott-d-pettigrew/arcade-fire-neighborhood-4-7-kettlesscott-pettigrew-acoustic-cover

  21. Marcial Silva

    Beautiful

  22. Miguel Hernandez

This album is so brilliant. Great band.

  23. 2002trigger

This is a really clever song. Its timing and lyrics dovetail the emotion of pressure. Its a classic right there. WOW

  24. Julian

this band is just too much ,  the more i listen to it , the more i feel it

    DillyDyson007

Just something else, so much emotion that i can relate to. maybe thats just me but this album deserves to be remembered as a truly great piece of music.

  25. Tim Carter

This is wierd... My version has a different ending

  26. Tobias Hoyden

i'm 42, as of this moment, and i remember the early days of mtv. we were exposed to bands that simply had videos to offer. bands such as the boomtown rats and the split enz. these bands introduced a certain uniqueness to american ears. these guys remind me of those days.

    Jason Rogers

    Tobias Hoyden same experience!

    Perspeii

Tobias Hoyden As nice as this is, it’s somewhat ironic given the songs themes and meaning

  27. ToxicMayo9

Ready To Start isn't that great imo

  28. KazPranks

I couln't agree with you more, my good sir

  29. Terrance Jackson

The thing about Radiohead though is that they are more about the album. Aside from Creep and Lotus Flower, their albums far outshine singular songs from said albums. Like Bends, OK and Kid A is probably the best run of records in the last 40 years

  30. KazPranks

Okay, let me rephrase that. I DO like Creep, but I think there are songs that are much better (Paranoid Android, Everything in its Right Place, Just, etc.)

  31. KazPranks

well I don't like getting into a band through Wikipedia because I find that sometimes songs most mentioned on the Internet by a certain band don't turn out to be the best.
Take Radiohead, for example. I'm a big fan of the band, but I've never really liked Creep very much.

  32. Brynn

    Listen to everything!

  33. dibs0equiped

To me there isnt hipsters or dickriders or anything else. You just like the music and thats it.

  34. dimegobt

I would suggest starting with The Suburbs, everything is gold there, and moving back chronologically

  35. KazPranks

14 years old, just getting into Arcade Fire.
Can anybody give me a list of songs to listen to?

    Abhiroop Dey

It'd be beautiful if you're still listening to Arcade Fire. 19 year old saying hi! :)

    Diego Gonzalez

KazPranks I was 13 when I first got into arcade fire. 16 now but they're still one of my favorite bands.

    Ollie Fairweather

Hi there! I'm also 14 (I know you're way older now lol) and getting into Arcade Fire :D

    Royal Radish

    Happy 18th birthday buddy!

    Christopher Madero

  36. Irvin Escalona

I hate Hipsters, I Love Arcade Fire

  37. James Johnson

  39. Alexandra Carrasco

  40. 14newt

  42. bryhalterman

The like button isn't big enough 3 people accidentally clicked dislike in their excitement to click like.

  43. Noemí Quiroz

    Rock! Rock! Everywhere!!!!

  44. Peter Heiman

the add i just was forced to watch told me that Paul Ryan wanted to cut our budget....Good
It also told me that it would affect medicare...Good (for us that are in our 20's; won't touch "seniors")
It also told me, and this was speculation but still true, that Obama is desperate enough to poison my music experience with his BullSh*t.
    Romney/Ryan = your freedom

  45. Lies101

Wow! someone is harsh. Make your own smilie then...

  46. FRANITASSABLE

You should not need to listen to arcade fire to save the slighghghghghgtest life. Get better by yourself.

  47. Victor Cassone

sitting at my desk listening to this song and a fly comes on my leg. before i was about to kill it this song kicked in and made me appreciate its life. you saved a life arcade fire :)

    Th.El.Co._1

    Victor Cassone Haha.

  48. Deborah

    4:10 -----kill me softly

  49. falc3n

    I'm crying.

  50. Your2ndPlanB

I just saw you at Ocean of Noise. You didn't like that either. So why do you keep going to AF music?

  51. Luka Velickovski

Reading your comment is a waste of time.

  52. Jordon Johnson

I closed my eyes and nothing changed.

  53. Alan Pitcher

Imagine how sad the world would be if everyone knew about Arcade Fire, as everyone would wish the songs were just for themselves. Beautiful, yet sometimes heartbreaking lryics, mixed with nerve tingling melodies. Somedays are we are just drawn to listen to Arcade Fire.

  54. Ann Eckert

I think that Arcade Fire deserves more credit for their music. Like these lyrics.. don't just get thrown on to a sheet of paper, they take time and heart.

  55. Lies101

we ought to be patient, just like a seed that turns into an Amazon...it takes time...ages even.

  56. buddythecow

I do not think I've encountered an Arcade Fire song that I didnt like...

  57. Jamie Stoike

@AmandaXxXPlease In continuation, this ties into the line about his eyes being "covered by the hands of my unborn kids". Now that the narrator has grown up after Neighborhoods 1,2,3, and Une Annee, ("Time keeps creeping through the Neighborhood") he feels the pressure most adults feel, the pressure to find a wife and have kids, and he's trying; but nothing is happening, which leads into the "watched pot" line.

  58. Jamie Stoike

@AmandaXxXPlease To me, he's referring to how often people tell you to stop worrying about things, and just let your life happen without thinking too much, you'll eventually find what you're looking for. The line "a watched pot won't ever boil" refers to that, his worrying about his life. When he closed his eyes and "nothing changed," he means that not thinking about it didn't help: his life is exactly where he left it, and he's unable to bring back the feeling "drowned out by the radio."

  59. squeezeslemons

0:26 always scares the shit out of me....

  60. Tristan Schoenberger

  62. Mental Set

I daresay this is the most beautiful song of the last decade.

  63. Luis Labastida

May someone please explain the meaning of the chorus??
"They say a watched pot will never boil. Well i closed my eyes, and nothing changed. Just some water getting hotter in the flame"

    John R

Luis Labastida you can't keep watching something and expecting change. You have to detach yourself from it for a while to be able to see any real difference.

    MichaelLMe

Waiting is sometimes a long time

    A l e x a n d e r

Makes no difference whether you watch it or not... it’s just going to happen anyway. Just like life and death. It will happen regardless of whether you run away from death or cling to life.

  64. daconor91

@tehsuperepicpwnzor They're not underrated at all, they headline festivals and are consistently voted as the best band in the world
