Antlers, The - Sylvia (An Introduction) Lyrics

When you were younger, you had nightmares
You had scissor-pain and phantom limbs
And things that kept you nervous
Through that twelve-year interim

When you fell crossing that street
South of Houston, old Manhattan land
Those nightmares fell from building-tops
And took you by the hand

And you were brought into those rooms
With sliding curtains, shining children's heads
And one of them, that boy
Was not as lucky as you then

But he returns to you at night
Just when you think you might have fallen asleep
His face is up against yours
And you're too terrified to speak

Oh, Sylvia
Oh, Sylvia
You may think that I'm not listening
But I am, goddamn, I am

I won't pretend I understand
Because I can't, and know I never will
But something makes you sting
And something makes you want to kill

It made you crawl under that house
And stick your head under the stove
It's all connected
In those complicated nightmares that you wove

Oh, Sylvia
Oh, Sylvia
You may think that I'm not listening
But I am, goddamn, I am

Antlers, The Sylvia (An Introduction) Comments
  1. calvinnn

the repetition of the strongest lines of epilogue here still fucks me up

  2. calvinnn

I've listened to Hospice more times than I can count, but I'm hearing this for the very first time and I'm completely speechless.

  3. breadpimp

i feel like this a prelude to Hospice, yet explains Sylvia.

  4. Rain Storm

I LISTENED TO THIS ALBUM A MILLION FUCKING TIMES??? DIDNT KNOW ABOUT THIS SONG TIL NOW??? IM IN TEARS

  6. Alex Delarge

This really should have been on the vinyl release of Hospice, since the 'Introduction' in the liner notes is the lyrics to this song.

    first comment of 2015 here! 2/3/15 :D

  9. Ag3ntW1nd3x

This is technically the actual prologue to Hospice

  10. Clay Gregg

Im pretty sure this the first out of four songs that tell the same story. Sylvia an introduction, sylvia, bear, and epilogue. Listen to them in order. Its the most beautiful work ive ever heard

    LD986

Imagine doing this instead of just listening to the full album

  11. Michaela Kinghorn

It's in the tune of Bear, isn't it? I love this. I saw the lyrics at first under prologue when I first discovered hospice, and was terribly disappointed when they weren't actually on it because they're really beautiful

The most powerful verse to me, as I can so flipping relate to being on the recieving end of that!

  13. Sylvia Sabbagha

My name is Sylvia. I want them to play at my funeral.

  14. Tobias Bernander Silseth

@iamthebyron It's a bonus track on Hospice if you buy it on iTunes, so I get why he said that it's the final track, but "Epilogue" is of course the final track on hospice.

  15. kasskoffee

Beautiful. Ugh, I love them too much.

  16. iamthebyron

This is actually not on Hospice. It's on their EP "New York Hospitals"....the 10th song on Hospice, "Epilogue," is the final track. Incredible song/album/band, in any case!
