She takes this tune to a soulful-and intimate level.

This cover is all about a gorgeous buildup to the last minute. She just kills it in a way The (incomparable) Clash could never do. Love her version.

Not surprising to see a song from London Calling getting a laid back treatment. The Clash had already left their punk roots behind by the time this song was made. They'd ventured well and truly into melodic pop. It's all over the album.

I like the change, from a female singer, in the meaning of the first line. When The Clash sang it, it means "They say stand by your man... and you didn't do that." From a woman, it seems to say instead, "They say stand by your man... so I did that, but you didn't have my back."

Just discovered this on the soundtrack of a Dutch movie - Zus&Zo - hey what a surprise. Had not recognised her voice although it did sound familiar.

Thank you for this post, I have looked for this version from time to time on Youtube. This song was the played to a former lover when I ended our relationship. It difinately captured all of my emotions and feelings at the time. It still does to this day!
