Anna Nalick - Waterloo Sunset Lyrics

Dirty old river
Must you keep rolling
Flowing into the night
People so busy
Makes me feel dizzy
Taxi light shines so bright
But I don't need no friends
As long as I gaze on
Waterloo sunset
I am in paradise

Every day I look at the world from my window
But chilly, chilly is the evening time
Waterloo sunset's fine

Terry meets Julie
Waterloo Station
Every Friday night
But I am so lazy
Don't want to wander
I stay at home at night
But I don't feel afraid
As long as I gaze on
Waterloo sunset
I am in paradise

Every day I look at the world from my window
But chilly, chilly is the evening time
Waterloo sunset's fine

Millions of people
Swarming like flies 'round
Waterloo underground
But Terry and Julie
Cross over the river
Where they feel safe and sound
And they don't need no friends
As long as they gaze on
Waterloo sunset
They are in paradise

Waterloo sunset's fine
Waterloo sunset's fine
Waterloo sunset's fine
Fine

I was about 13 or 14 around the time when 2 tone and mods were back in (I was a skinhead I started young my mum liked it though she quite rightly thought we were well dressed and tidy)I was reading one of those ten favourite songs sections in a music magazine and because it was Dave Wakeling of The Beat I was interested and was keen to look up the tunes I hadn't heard of.One of them was Waterloo sunset and after a while I located it(it wasn't like today with the internet you had to put the leg work in)It's been one of my favourite tunes its a classic and it's a truly made in England tune from the lyrics to Ray Davies vocals, brilliant as mod as it gets.

2011. In my sleepy old town of Lorain,Oh. Just going for a afternoon walk before dinner. Ray Davies was to perform at the Palace and ''Wham'" inadvertently I run into Ray arriving. What a haunting and daunting experience that was. Also, I had the nerve to ask how was his brother? He pause with that grin and responded saying.."" My brother is alright"".Cool Day!

almost 30 years old my dad raised me on the kinks and all the other classic rock bands. he actually went to woodstock and he didnt just say it and never went he has his ticket stub framed in his office. so grateful my parents raised me on this stuff cause it is leagues better than alot of the current stuff we have. dont get me wrong some of it is good but it all sounds the same to me the thing with all the bands from that generation is everyone had a unique sound. what i would give to have seen some of these guys in the flesh back in the day

  32. Danshelle Jones

I just finished watching this movie that kept saying, ‘the kinks are the most underrated band of all time’ and in my brain they we’re talking about the Kooks (😅🙈). Then the last song played and i was like, hey i know that song i should finally find out who sings it! ...it was then i realized that I know and love so many songs by the kinks but hadn’t put it together that they were all by the same group. 🤦🏽‍♀️ I feel so silly now.

    Timeless

  39. Berliner Stadtschloss

Apart from the unique feeling, that the song provides, I do understand the meaning much better in my Age:People can never be fully trusted, or they die away or whatever, but we are daily, in each and every moment surrounded by wonders and quite often by amazing beauty. Most Folks get blind to their surroundings, but those who still "see" and feel will never be either bored nor lonely.

  45. BibleBlack667

Noel Gallagher would probably sell his soul (if he still has one) to write something half as perfect as this.
On a par with California Dreamin' ...somewhat short of Who Knows Where The Time Goes? - but even Zeppelin don't get that perfect...

  46. K-Blue

This song makes my heart ache and flutter simultaneously. It makes me nostalgic for a time in my teens that I know for a fact was not pleasant or fun, but is still somehow nice to remember in the present (I had a pretty rough upbringing, plagued with abuse and addiction, especially as a teen when I became addicted to opiates myself). This wasn't the 60s, actually the 00s, not so long ago. But compared to where I am now, it seems light years away.
I was an opiate addict all throughout HS, and one of the few joys I had in my life besides heroin was an older hp laptop a close friend gifted me for my birthday (there weren't no presents from anyone else at the time). We didn't have internet, but I had some stuff downloaded using another place's WiFi, this being one of the songs I'd listen to on loop for literally hours. If I wasn't listening to the Beatles, watching the entirety of Fooly Cooly (an amazing anime, still my favorite) or some clips of Sifl and Olly (old MTV show I liked) I'd be listening to this song 9 times out of 10 whenever I was home. It had an almost magical hold over me, and it still does to a degree. Getting high and staring out my bedroom window while the cool night air filled my room was the only "fun" thing I had to do in those days, but to me it was just fine. I liked to think that as long as I had that laptop, my "medicine", and my mattress to lay on, I too was in paradise. Didn't need love, or food, or anything else, so I believed. I think many addicts can relate to that.
But years later, with that old life and poison all far behind me and a much better one at the forefront, I can still sit in bed at night and hear this beautiful song and be grateful for its (and my own) existence. And that my adolescence, as toxic as it was generally, was not without its little bright spots.
I know I'm rambling, I just like expressing my nostalgia and fondness for the things that induce it.

  47. Cheyenne Brennan

I'm sure I must have heard "You Really Got Me" at some point in my life before that, but the moment I remember discovering this incredible band was when Ray Davies sang this masterpiece at the closing ceremony of the 2012 Olympics in London.

  63. Dave Dawson

These guys were great there songs were and still are quirky but so good how can you not dig them?

  64. heinrichvon

Most people don't seem to realize how much the background vocals, which were actually sung by both Dave and Ray's then-wife, Rasa Didzpetris, add to the song. Those ghostly voices bring so much feeling and mystery to the song. Needless to say, it wouldn't matter if the tune and the lyrics were not great, but those heavenly vocals make a fine recording even better.

  65. E Ripley
