First time I heard Anna Calvi (and her amazing band) was at Green Man (UK) this year.  I was sat right at the back of the terraces in the main arena, and her big-sounding guitar coupled with the size of the main stage area was incredible, hearing it ring around the valley in the Black Mountains.  Won't be forgetting that any time soon, if you get the chance to see her live, go!

A few points to make. Firstly, if a band writes a song like 'rockstar' they don't know the meaning of passion (eg Nickelback). Secondly, if you pick up an instrument it's because it looks good to you (that's why I play guitar), if it was purely for image she wouldn't have made a career out of it and done well. Lastly, her songs are how she wants to be heard, and if you don't like it then stop listening.

Oh yeah, she's particularly scared of her guitar when she plays that absolutely terrible Love Won't Be Leaving solo during her live shows. I mean come on, 25 years of experience is not enough to be a good guitarist. Plus, she's definitely very timid on stage. She sings so qiuiet I can barely hear her. Such a horrid musician. How can anyone like her?

Yes, I've thought this since I heard I'm the Man who Will Find You. She has a dramatic, arch quality unusual in women which I can relate to, and has this presence in her voice of velvety maleness.

Jake Brady, it's a shame that nickelback was your go-to choice for a "shit band". Nickelback are awful, but at least they play with passion. Calvi performs with the same dead-eyed autonomy (beit an incredibly sketchy one) as any "musician" straight out of art school. When you play music just because it looks good, you're defeating the point. Her guitar skills are lacklustre, her voice is a joke, and her songs sound like they were structured by picking random sections out of a hat blindfolded.

the point is that calvi is original. she has the talent to mimic not just adele, but a wide array of stylings including winehouse, garbage, even annie lennox. i say she is the best female performer since annie lennox. she states as her influences the likes of ennio morricone. and her trio is intuitive as hell and just as good live as they are in some studio mix. that's more than you can say for any one of the other divas out there today.
