Animals, The - The House Of The Rising Sun Lyrics

There is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God, I know I'm one

My mother was a tailor
She sewed my new blue jeans
My father was a gamblin' man
Down in New Orleans

Now the only thing a gambler needs
Is a suitcase and a trunk
And the only time he's satisfied
Is when he's on a drunk

[Organ Solo]

Oh mother, tell your children
Not to do what I have done
Spend your lives in sin and misery
In the House of the Rising Sun

Well, I got one foot on the platform
The other foot on the train
I'm goin' back to New Orleans
To wear that ball and chain

Well, there is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God, I know I'm one

  20. M.... B....

No matter who wrote it or when, the Animals surely made it awesome and famous.

  21. h.... e....

I love how at the end everyone has a straight face except their guitarist, who looks like he just pulled a prank or something

  22. L.... D....

  23. Z.... ....

Yeah, but you should see the size of his dick. And speaking of organs, what about the organist here, what a mighty effort.

  24. m.... m....

the Beatles weren't the founders of pop, they were a rock band, any music that is popular becomes pop music, that's what pop means, its short for popular, but they were a rock and roll band, in fact Elvis was a massive influence on John Lennon.

  25. A.... ....

Yes, it is a great song, loved by many. But neither The Animals NOR Leadbelly wrote it. It's a folk traditional dating back to at least the 1800s. There's an existing recording of it from 1934, and the Archive of American Folk Song (Library of Congress) has one from 1937. Plus, many say its roots can be traced back to a 500-yr-old English folk song about a SoHo brothel. No one stole the writing credit. Just FYI.

  26. T.... ....

'black" call it like it is. slave music. it was what it was

  27. m.... ....

    playing to fast.
    Sounds like the chipmunks.

  28. S.... J....

To bad the black man named Leadbelly who wrote this song in 1944 did not get credit for writing this song, that is so loved by many.

  29. C.... V....

    El paseito esta muy logrado.

  30. T.... ....

My favorite version of this song and definitely the most famous.

  31. C.... H....

  47. J.... G....

Esta musica me leva ao passado, e me vejo assistido um bom filme no cine São Luiz em Missão Velha, e curtindo esta musica antes do filme iniciar.

  48. s.... s....

На них выросло пол союза, и не одного комента. Странно. Ага.

  49. M.... C....

    Supernatural brought me here...

  50. S.... U....

This version is so much better than the Doors'.

  51. d.... y....

you're right, of course. but, he's probably very young, and doesn't know any better. but, who am i to say anything.
BUT, let me say, Thank you to TheGoodOldRock. i remember this song as far back as the late 50's early Sixties. Seemed my sister and I listened to it in Minn. before we moved to Calif. Could be wrong. and easily verified. just saying, as they say. any way. Thanks!

  52. s.... ....

On this day in 1964 {July 9th} the Animals' "House of the Rising Sun" reached #1 {for 1 week} on the United Kingdom's Singles chart...
One month later on August 8th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; and on September 9th it peaked at #1 {for 3 weeks} and spent 11 weeks on the Top 100 chart...
It also reached #1 in Canada and Sweden...
Three covered versions have charted; Frijid {#7 in 1970}, Santa Esmeralda {#78 in 1978}, and Dolly Parton {#77 in 1981}...
    R.I.P. Chas Chandler {Bassist}

  53. m.... ....

Ok I'm just going to say it right now. The UK really knows how to make music

  54. T.... ....

Hey stupid, If you knew anything about this song you'd know it's origins have very little to do with this band. So instead of looking like an ignorant idiot that doesn't knows how to turn off cap lock you could make a half intelligent comment.

  55. z.... r....

HE SAID NEW ORLEANS THATS THE AMERICAN SOUTH,LOOK IT UP ON THE MAP.STOP TALKING CRAP ABOUT ITS PATTAYA THAILAND .

  56. D.... ....

I disliked your stupid comment :(

  57. T.... ....

I think the hair gives em a certain charm. I mean if you would see their photo it would never cross your mind that those geeky looking guys could produce songs that are listened to almost 50 years later.
They look like a classic 50's band but sound completely different. The contrast is wonderful.

  58. M.... ....

I love the hair! :D Really I just like the whole thing, the hair alone was indeed horrible ;)

  59. M.... ....

It just may seem so because The Beatles became so popular, but that was simply THE look for most of bands those years.

  60. m.... ....

Yeah I had no idea this song was about a whore house

  61. S.... ....

why when they perform keyboard "solo" it look like top gear song to me?

  62. l.... ....

I don't know what you're talking about he says "There was a house in New Orleans they called the Rising Sun."

  63. j.... A....

yup they must put this song in next GTA!!!

  64. R.... H....

THE BEST SONG OF ALL TIME!

  65. T.... ....

Founders of punk? Don't do drugs, read up on the history of rock and listen to bands before you make statements that have nothing to do with reality.

  66. S.... ....

The Animals did not predate The Beatles. The Beatles formed in 1960, and had a reputation for performing in clubs in the Liverpool area before they became popular in the UK - which was around 1962.

The Animals formed in 1962, and moved to London in 1964.

Both bands came to international attention at around the same time.

  67. C.... ....

    Have they big ears, why???

  68. P.... S....

    My all time favorite song.

  69. K.... M....

This song is awesome and no one does it better than The Animals !!!

  70. s.... ....

this should be on guitar hero, somanny crap songs on it. we need to even it out with great songs

  71. J.... S....

I like the song but this is such a terrible performance, holy crap! It's what I imagine one would hear during a particularly bad drug trip.

  72. J.... ....

    @Jeremy7513 nah just a troll.

  73. E.... ....

Thanks for posting this great 1960's classic by The Animals. The sheet music for the organ part on "The House of the Rising Sun" can be found at manymidi.com/sheetmusic.htm - a note-for-note transcription.

  74. T.... ....

Play that mother effing organ! Remind me of my pops.

  75. h.... ....

@ErikMan217 the animals came before the beatles champ, read the year 1964 the beatles didnt hit it big until 65

  76. R.... ....

love this song and the keyboard solo is super awesome

  77. J.... R....

    alan price a legend

  78. T.... M....

drackorage, my father says fuck off

  79. f.... ....

so I wear this ball and chain...

  80. b.... ....

The house of the rising sun is the dead end for the good christian who meets with his real self and wouid make a slave of himself a a self punishment for what he sees as his dirty unfixieble soul

  81. F.... T....

so good on so many levels -- altho it's been done by many other artists, Eric Burdon absolutely OWNS this song (yes, leave it to a Brit to capture the true essence of American soul/ folk) it is just so painful and raw -- he may be lip synching, but no one, I mean NO ONE -- can capture that angst and emotion like he does. LOVE IT !! New Orleans is proud

  82. s.... ....

    Wassup 'RandomTroll'

  83. J.... M....

    They dont sound britsh?

  84. J.... M....

@mplindberg i call punchin him in the balls!

  85. m.... ....

i think i can safely say that that 1 guy who disliked this vid should get punched just once from each person who liked this vid

  86. J.... M....

Most other versions of this song suck

  87. L.... M....

It is the best song I heard till it was sang by The Animals for the first time/ And it remains to be my the most liked song till today.

  88. C.... ....

Not that he is making bad sounds, I didn't mean that at all, it's just obvious that he isn't actually singing it the way it is sounding in the video.

  89. C.... ....

Haha I like how the electric guitars are not plugged in at all in the video. And how he doesn't open his mouth wide enough while he is singing to actually make a good sound.

    C.... ....

    This video is lip sync

  90. s.... ....

what a masterpiece, so deep and powerful... woh I'm speechless °_°

  91. N.... S....

@Drackorage If musicians come from the same background they will have very similar traits......for example: all the rappers today, have the same style

  92. J.... M....

wow this song is 33 years older than me and i still like it :D

  93. F.... M....

I don't give a shit what anyone thinks, the animals are better than the beatles

  94. S.... C....

@windows14 You know, I postede this video on FB and was corrected. The song predates the juvy.

  95. S.... C....

The House of The Rising Sun was a real juvenile correction facility in New Orleans, not a whorehouse.

  96. T.... ....

@Drackorage Well they both came from UK, so it's normal to have several bands that look alike. Though their music is very much different they both draw their roots from 1950's look and rock music.

A similar thing can be said for a lot of rock bands today, long hair, washed out jeans, t-shirts.....If you look at musicians on a wider scale you'll notice similarities between a lot of bands. Just look at 1980's bands, especially he hair, oh the hair brrrrr.....

  97. J.... B....

It's a shame music that once took talent has fallen off...
