Animal Collective - Monkey Riches Lyrics
Lately I need a better plan
I want to get my knees out in the dirt with my hands
'Cause I have been a cerebral spouse
Now my legs want to go into the emerald house
I don't want to bail out
And I want to help out
I don't want to nod out
I don't want to knock you down
But why am I still looking for a golden age?
You tell me that I ought to have a golden wage
Every time I look up at that blurry sun
All I think about are bodies floating up
Why does dawn leave everybody home with chance?
It makes me wonder how I even wrote this song
Does this not occur to almost everyone?
It makes a monkey wretch
It makes a monkey rich
Lately I want to be in my heart
But where exactly is my heart and where does it start?
I don't want that Tylenol
Can I sing and make change without crushing clams?
I can help the little things but I have big plans
I don't want that Tylenol
It makes a monkey wretch
It makes a monkey rich

Best animal collective song. Such an underrated album
fantastic
The working class are always promised that the capitalist system cam work for them because they can become a capitalist. for the vast majority they end up working to make the 1% filthy rich and do not earn the full fruits of their labour. Great song and video
Stop ruining good music with political commentary
+Koettnylle Maybe AC shouldn't have written lyrics that could be interpreted as such then?
Commie? Kek. Isn't your worldview small if you are putting that many things in these big boxes?
@Skullkan6
Dude I wish I was as cultured as you.
Anything can be interpreted in any way by anyone, my friend ;)
By the way, the nature of the discrimination is not a result of capitalism, but corporalism. Capitalism is too idealistic just like socialism.
A great song to run to
Sounds like shit
you're an animal collective fan though, aren't you?
@Kyle Tomlinson yeah, I just don't get the jumbled up mechanic sounds of this song
Then you're not really a fan
This is weird so, I do not like it.
excellent criticism my man
must be so boring navigating in a narrow mind all the time
omg this is awesome joy joy joy joyjoyjoy
JOY JOY JOY JOY!!!!

they sound kind of like yeasayer during the first minute
Every time I look up at that blurry sun,
all I think about are bodies floating up.
+Valerie Crowder you mean these floaters
It's Duck Dynasty guy
"Еще раз, вы употребляете наркотики?"
My interpretation of the video is that, like the song, the video is about money and the ultimate worthlessness and uselessness it has when compared with importance of family and love.
The rope is an analogy to money. The old man can make the rope and he's so good at it he can make the rope dance, he has respect from everyone. The young man is jealous of this respect and wants it for himself, thereby going to the well, working really hard on his craft and making lots of rope. Time goes by and soon the old man is dead. Further time passes and the boy is now making more rope than the old man ever did, completely filling the house with it. At the end the man realises that he has made too much. Unfortunately its too late - the rope takes his child, and eventually his wife.
"I dont want to 'knot' you down"
Jake that is a really good interpretation of the song.
4 years later. Fuckin love your input man.
this is pretty good
Jesus fucking christ this is obnoxious.
Is the singer saying "i'll make you wanna wretch"? At least it's true.
Does this band exist solely to engender migraines?
drugs man. Drugs.
@Logan Young
why, you got some?
only the good kind
worst ac video. great song though.
Very cool to see an AnCo video dapple in surrealism rather than abstract. Not that I mind abstract, it's just what we've come to expect from them.
not to be a dork, but surrealism is a form of abstraction. plus I've learned not to expect any categorical work from them, they're pretty original in my opinion.
Oh yeah, I guess it is. I guess I'm just trying to contrast this with the usual Danny Perez-esque stuff.
That makes sense-- that's some super abstract crazy, awesomeness
@Aaron Rossell
I don't really think surrealism is a form of abstraction. If anything it's an addition or distortion imo. Surrealism loosely translates to 'on top of realism'. But I guess I can see what you mean.
I think you mean dabble. Iono what dapple is but I think it's some weird porn thing; just sayin
Two lines say it all for me, "All I think about are spirits floating up", "I don't want that tylenol"
They made it big years ago, where you been?
I'm down.
Haven't they already?
This video is like a spiritual process. The old man is the innate wisdom located in a person's psyche and the younger guy represents a person's ego. The deeper and older intelligence can do things that the ego tries to mimic but can't accomplish on it's own, causing the deeper wisdom to fade back into the unconscious (the old man dies.) The cosmic wisdom returns as a mystical figure bearing a diamond (the true Self) which replaces the ego and claims its rightful position within the psyche.
Dividual Music :)
Wow this is good, I hope they make it big one day.
IAMthe StopMotion Animator of this delicious vid! Please enjoy and take a gander at my reel !
nigga you on some sophistry bowlshit
I can't stop listening to this song, it's so damn good.
Once again, leave it to Animal Collective to create an oddly horrifying video which makes no apparent sense or meaning. This is one of my favorite songs off of Centipede Hz, I never would have expected a video like this. Pretty great filmmaking!
In my opinion this is avey's best album vocally
Avey has apparently gone insane.
Avey sounds so annoying on this album.
Sealed imagination of youtube kids, untainted. Enjoy the music everything else is clueless, it just moves far beyond the naked eyes.
Fantastic Charlie and the Chocolate Factory alternate ending!
the old man is the monkey within, the performer who amuses. but he is overbearing, and gets easily tangled up within his own tricks. the song, and the video, are about learning to cope with being a moderately successful artist - someone who has to let the monkey within come out in order to earn a living but also try not to get tangled up in all the hype by letting the monkey get too full of himself.
Hold up, this may not be the best music video they've made (in my opinion anyway), but the song is great
songs like hey light, alvin row, i see you pan, meet the light child, native belle, pumpkin gets a snakebite.. all of those are characteristic of novel ideas told from people attempting to paint a vivid dream musically, they don't really focus on rhyme or rhythm, but they speak so intrinsically the depths of great imaginations and the lucidity of passionate artists showcasing their great concepts. This? this is just an attempt to seem like more than it is, which is pure cacophony.
what are some of their older stuff that you speak of
Moral of the story. Play with ropes. And huge rope monster will come for you and fuck your day right up.
Really now.
Grovey stuff.
Rope = Pope = strings along many believers.
i cant interpret this. i need help.
About 30 seconds in I was wondering if I was on drugs. About half way in my question was answered.
That Rope Monster is excellent!!
This video is rope culture.
Why do you think he started by saying "I THINK..." and not "IT BLATANTLY DOESN'T" ?
A rope walks into a bar.
The bartender tells him "I'm sorry, but we dont serve rope here"
The rope says "You must be kidding, all I want is a drink after a hard days work"
The bartender replies "You need to leave now"
So the rope walks out of the bar, into the ally, ties himself up into a jumble, shags his top end, walks back into the bar.
The bartender looks at him and says "We don't serve rope here"
The rope looks back at the bar tender and replies "You are mistaken sir, I'm a frayed knot"
LOL!!!!!!!! You are the smartest person on the internet! Congratulations!
You're just as wrong to say that it can't mean that. Just FYI.
Just got about 5 minutes in... no longer know what's happening.
Oddly enough, this is amongst the most normal videos Animal Collective's ever made.

Gooooood explanation! :D
shut up little boy
Get Fucked Nerd
oh my gosh the gentleman in bed looks like such a fun person! i like his face
lol ropes
i'm just glad George Harrison finally got to be in an Animal Collective video.
Nice insight :-D
Tthis song has more meaning then you think. so think to teach your self a sound thats taught by music with out a teacher., thats riddled with love and all its fear... many would kill for what is seeked! for few will ever find what makes it Complete! "Save the Music"
Interesting video, but it doesn’t really fit the song in my opinion. It’s overall tone seems very contrary to the spirited nature of the song, save toward the end perhaps.
thanks for totally spoiling the video for me before I even got a chance to watch it.
I think that trying to explain this is like trying to explain «Heart Shaped Box». But the good thing about art is that it's not gonna get mad about our interpretations
i dont understand the ending of the video after the old man dies
... I take it back
My favorite from Centipede Hz. Nice video!

In short, it is our responsibility to educate the youth or we will end up with a generation unable to advance. You make it sound so much more fucked up and evil though.
Wasn't my favorite song on the album but the video enhances the music nicely. It's much more better than the last video they did, what was just awful in my opinion. I would even say this is one of Animal Collectives best music video to date.
He's too busy wizarding the ropes to do anything useful.
and the true beauty is that that's only one of a few good interpretations of the song/video. i love AC
YOU TAKE THAT BACK APPLESAUCE IS THE SEXIEST VIDEO OF 2013
I like it a lot.
i prefer it with my eyes closed and my ears turned up.
very brown like a burrito against a windshield?
i dunno, when i think about if i explained their earlier stuff literally versus if i explained this literally, the old stuff is actually thought provoking and unique, but this seems like a bad disney movie remade by someone on a lot of acid who thinks they're being profound and avant garde, but really it's just stupid and pointless not actually accomplishing anything
if that guy is such a fucking wizard how come he doesn't wizard himself a pair of working legs
I saw 2 songs live and was so ill that I had to be taken home :'(
Dark Woodstock that sucks ass :(
Looks like he's at the end of his rope.
Just you
Sound is a bit off, or is it just me?
i love their music, i love their videos.. and i'd loveee to see them live one day
Funny, I always thought that this song had a very vibrant texture to it. Whenever I listen to it I can just imagine bright lights and flashing neon colours. This video is very brown, though, it's not necessarily what first comes to mind when I hear the song. It's a pretty good track though, probably my favourite off the album next to Today's Supernatural and Rosie Oh.
well, beats the applesauce video right?
I've been a fan for a very long time and I love hearing various explanations because everyone gets a different meaning from their music and videos. That's the beauty of music ;) It's art. I'm sure you understand that.
simultaneously hate and like this song.
Brilliant explanation. Thank you so much!!
I don't think I quite understand.
