Totally agree with you that their lyrics are awesome but I think that what they're going for when they "mask" their lyrics is actually making it so that the vocals aren't a foreign instrument in the music. They create an amazing atmosphere in their music and every little thing that they do just belongs there. Its like their music comes from a foreign universe and their vocals are denizens of that universe, foreign to us but natural to the music.

I've watched this video so many times. I love how much Dave feels his music. This song is breathing.

I've had this version downloaded for years on MP3. It's weird having an audio that I have so many memories with, suddenly having a video to go with it.

Goddamn this version is AWESOME. Seriously, it blows out of the water the album version which is pretty much unlistenable.

This desconstrutions of ACs songs actually gives them a completely different lighting and the experience that this band is able to give us seems to be everlasting

@tsuuki yeah, people just automatically assume that certain drugs are evil just because they are illegal. But a lot of drugs (particularly hallucinogenic) can be very therapeutic, enlightening, and inspiring. And if you have a problem with people writing music that comes from the use of drugs then I would recommend mainstream radio pop, its plenty cushioned for your delicate little ears.

@DravenX53 it doesn't sound like random noise. When i think of noisy music i think of Merzbow or Yoko Ono. It's just i feel animal collective's aesthetic is consciously inaccessible. while i like unconventional artists along the same indie lines like Sigur ros or Joanna Newsom, animal collective feels more contrived. But to each their own i suppose.

@spadict Actually the song "Take Pills" by Panda Bear was about learning to live without antidepressants, not doing drugs (according to Panda). The band members themselves have explicitly and repeatedly stated that they don't mix doing drugs and making music.

They've all definitely done a ton of drugs at some point in their life, and I'm sure it's been an influence, but its certainly not as if they get stoned and then poof, music happens.

@shankbone01 Here's the thing about their music: it sounds like a jumble of random noise when you listen to it for the first time. I'll even admit it. But, just give it some time, you'll feel it out soon enough. It's worth the effort, believe me! Anyway, if it's just a more coherent 'sound' you're looking for, I'd suggest listening to the album as a whole (the aesthetic is pretty consistent); their albums are sort of a package deal.

I think this sounds even better than the album version. The lyrics and melody of this song really stand on its own.

listening to these planet claire sessions i'm impressed by a) what a good songwriter Tare is, especially in regards to lyrics, which I don't usually pick up on, and B) how much Panda Bear adds to the music. Without him a whole level/dimension of the music vanishes.
