Angels & Airwaves - Mercenaries Lyrics

Can you come on
out of the cold
How do we make it out alive

Get a weapon
Lockin the door
Stayin awake to stay alive

Kill the fallen
Knife in the back
Plan of attack
A beady eye

As you follow
Head out the pack
Flood out the rat
And stab em' dry

Got ya' come on
Goin in deep
Falling asleep
an open door

Get the ballast
Crawl up the coast
Pull on the neck
And cut the cord

Can you hold it
Get me a rope
Combing the lake of fire god

Like a bullet
Follow the smoke
Head of the snake
and cut it off

Ghosts heroing front lines
On a lonely cove
And they left behind
A bit if sorrow

You didn't need to count me out
When the final push is a little weight on your neck sometimes

You didn't need to count me out
When your feeling low here's a little hand from above because your on my mind

You kinda got it
Further a cause
Broaden the reach

a little pain
Like a comet burn up and die
Hear a pin drop a mile away

Like a disease
move with a tease
Glide of the feet
an atom bomb

As your dieing
both of your knees
Will fall to the street
You'll carry on

If they don’t play this when they next play live I’m gonna be gutted!

    H.... B....

Harry Bunker I just saw them in Minneapolis and as I was listening to this just now I was thinking how amazing this would have been live and I can't believe they didn't play it. The show was amazing but so bummed they didn't play this.

  7. J.... ....

On older albums, the focus seemed to be more on the vocals and simple catchy hooks. It was never the mosed advanced music, but to me it was more enjoyable. Toms voice and pronunciation of certain words has gotten very out of touch from the more "space themed " eras. This new more instrument forward harsh vocal style of songs has driven me away from this album. "Chasing Shadows" to me has been much more fun to listen to than these songs. I'm a huge fan of "tremors " though. Hopefully the next album they release goes back to the IEmpire style of song writing. And if Tom still wants to experiment , maybe consider a duo group with him and illan thats not titled with the AVA brand. Either way I will still always follow Toms awesome stuff😁

  23. C.... S....

one time in 2014 i fell down on the floor and I hit my head while I sang this number

  24. F.... R....

I think the reason tom left  blink,is evidently that he seems to have given up the positive change the world attitude making real music again. This album is evidence for it. And I think he left because he was offended that his ava dreams failed because of blinks higher status despite blink being a non positive band mostly.

    F.... R....

+Jagger Davidson But after 2005 blink said they were out indefinitely, and they reunited in 2008.

    F.... R....

+Fidgety Rock I think it was more so the fact that blink is known for more immature vocals, antics etc. and Tom has simply outgrown that phase. AVA is more serious of a band, no doubt. :/ This is coming from a blink fan by the way.

    F.... R....

You are so off its not even close to the reason. How is AVA a failure? They arent mainstream but the best music isnt. Tom had alot of ideas that he wanted to do that mark and travis didnt want to be a part of. Therefore, Tom left to start a more meaningful, more complex band.

    F.... R....

+Jason Lee Haha I see what you did there

    F.... R....

tom has a huge ego.. he thinks sometimes that he is the main man of blink cause of "all the small things" of course he expected AVA to go top pop.. its not a failure in my eyes.. but I think blink and mark and travis kinda "Outdid" ava style in blink.. and thats why he quit.. I think he feels very butthurt now that blink did a nr1 without him.. .and I still love tom though.

  25. M.... K....

I wonder if Tom's been taking singing lessons? His voice sounds a bit different, in a good way, more reliable. It sounds like he's learned to hold onto the notes better than before and he sings more from his stomach now. I think you can hear it on "Anomaly" and his solo-song "The Invisible Parade" aswell. Always been a fan of his different vocal performances in the studio, even though he has his ups- and downs live. Anyways, I like it!

    M.... K....

Ilan probably teached him hah :) I'm sure he probably knew how but its still awesome.

    M.... K....

How can you say he changed his voice? Ava hasnt played live after this album yet. A studio can cover up and change toms voice to his liking in any way.

    M.... K....

+suicidesilence4444 Regardless, he's been using a slightly different style lately. Compare Mercenaries (TDW, 2014) to Anxiety (Love 2, 2011), or An Endless Summer (Demos, 2015) to Wishing Well (Neighborhoods, 2011). Post-processing aside, he clearly has made a conscious effort to switch things up vocally, and it (in my biased opinion) sounds much nicer.

    M.... K....

It actually made me wonder if he featured someone on this song

    M.... K....

There's less edge in his articulation and more clear notes coming through. The best comparison between his old and new vocal technique would be WDNTW vs the WDNTW Acoustic EP

  26. M.... K....

    Amazing album!

  27. D.... G....

I wasn’t sure if the new record was going to evoke feelings like the previous ones have, but I was wrong. When listening to Tremors, Mercenaries, Kiss With A Spell and Tunnels in sequence, they indeed evoke emotion, and feelings I once buried and forgotten. Seems stupid to let music resurrect dead feelings, but they’re a part of your personal evolution and ascension of the soul. For me, I speak how I feel through songs, which is to say, not always understood to those who can say how they feel through mere words.

Tremors reminds me of the excitement I had with a previous love – life felt different, I saw things differently. While I was blinded by how I felt, I knew she wasn’t good for me, but I didn’t care, I was on a ride to the unknown since I felt you never really know where opportunities will take you unless you try.

Mercenaries/Kiss With A Spell brings to light the battle I fought with both my emotions and the lack there of on her part, trying to make a means to an end with what we had. My heart was a ghost stuck on that lonely cove, and wherever I seemed to go, I left a bit of that sorrow that I was feeling as it begun to wither. She really didn’t need to count me out, but she did and I refused to give up – initially. In the end I was unable to say it, be it out loud or to myself, that it indeed, was over. That first kiss was rapture laced with a spell of thorns.

Tunnels remind me of how I felt dead when it all fell apart, like it was all a bad dream. I wanted nothing more but to pull her close, but it was too late, as my heart was already gone and I was drowning in a river of sorrow. Wherever I went, I felt like I was chasing after her, but going nowhere fast, while leaving a wake of destruction. I eventually put those feelings to rest and begun my ascension from the bottom.

These songs just seem so powerful when listened to together (and individually), but that’s what I love about AVA, they bring out raw emotion, and even paint surreal pictures in my mind of things you cannot see with your own eyes. It totally sounds stupid saying this aloud, but as a fan, I thought I’d share.

Favourite song off the album! If you guys could, please check my original alternative rock song on my channel. Thanks :)

  35. S.... ....

Anyone else think this song and others on the album sound like some songs by The Killers?

  36. S.... C....

I only came here to say that this is by far my favourite track, not only on this album but my favourite Angels track to date! This is the most progressive album that they've put out. I enjoyed the previous albums, yes, and it's weird without the other guys, but this is my favourite AvA.

  37. L.... L....

Yet another AvA track I wasn't too sure about - but after listening to it, and the rest of The Dream Walker  9-10 times, you really appreciate it and get sucked in, and happy to listen to it a further 500 + times.  Viva AvA - Please please keep up the amazing work Angels And Airwaves.  :)

Tom Delonges voice is fucking sexy.

  41. K.... P....

This is my favorite song on the album.    That chorus.....

    K.... P....

Yeah it's a truly terrific killer chorus! =) When it first Hits it just takes the tune to the next level... =)

  42. h.... b....

second best song on the album, right next to it is tunnels

  43. T.... R....

This new album is so good!!

  44. J.... ....

It's like a blend between Ghost on the Dancefloor and When I Was Young

  45. O.... A....

Best of this album, who else agrees?

  46. M.... L....

mr travis barker played drums on this song... I swear.

    M.... L....

I bet they Will Come out and say ava was blink all along xD

    M.... L....

@Fidgety Rock nahh they're box car racer

  47. T.... D....

    Nice find.

  48. D.... D....

una de las mejores canciones del disco tremenda cancion tom de longe , si este esel preliminar de lo que viene con blink añadan a travis sera una locura ese disco

  49. T.... T....

    awesome

  50. r.... ....

The best song of the entire album

  51. M.... ....

imagine it was a blink song, how great it is travis in drum, mark bass and backing vocal

  52. G.... ....

3:59 idk why but I just love the way "lonely cove" is said in the background

    G.... ....

Lol, I was thinking the same thing!

  53. a.... v....

Thats such a great song. Tom you are awesome.

  54. J.... R....

I feel as if this song should be on WDNTW... Dope song

  55. F.... ....

people are saying this would've come out better if done with blink... when actually it wouldn't have come out at all. Ilan threw in every good element that people love in this song, the harmonies, the melody, heck it probably was his idea to give it a faster tempo. without him it would've been standard AVA with more aggressive lyrics (kinda). with blink it would've been a completely, completely different song. so, you know, enjoy it for what it is and stop wondering what it would sound like with Mark and Travis. Tom 'blink-ed' an AVA song (Disaster) and not a lot of people really liked it.

    F.... ....

That guy's right you meant "AVA'd a blink song"

    F.... ....

Id rather say this is how it sounds when mark hoppus blinkd Ava, the magic happens when they imprint eachother.

    F.... ....

Forexample marks best vocals are in a tom inspired song. And they both rock when they sing equally much

    F.... ....

@Felipe Deliberaes - Despite that, I thought Disaster was the best song on DED.

    F.... ....

i really like it too, the overall reaction wasn't positive though

  56. T.... O....

That riff in the background of the verses is so boxcar/untitled album era blink. Fuck i love it!

  57. i.... ....

i prefer their previus albums. This doesn't work for me (al least now, maybe in a couple of listenings I change my mind)

  58. j.... t....

I like this cd, but I think blink 182 could make a way better cd even with tom's new style if they just spent a couple months together like they did for the blink 182 self titled album

    j.... t....

Thats what they're doing starting January. They're renting a house and making an album in it early next year.

    j.... t....

@Fiqih Trihanda @Fiqih Trihanda I can't find the exact article but it was in one of the interviews for AVA. Here's one that's jsut a general update about blink though... http://www.altpress.com/news/entry/tom_delonge_says_blink_182_have_found_a_partner_to_release_their_new_album

    j.... t....

@Fiqih Trihanda In the interview he said something along the lines of "We found the house we're going to record in and we'll be meeting mid january to start writing songs"

    j.... t....

The thing is there needs to be that inspiration @jomm tomm... Like this album's clearly very inspired, unsurprisingly as Tom's always been extremely passionate about AVA.. So Passionate that it sorta indirectly tore Blink-182 apart circa a decade ago... I think fans of Blink and it's spawn bands need to just try and appreciate the music as it comes. Really it's technically lucky Blink reconciled at all. I'd much rather have them making music they're passionate about, and not music they feel forced to create, as the feeling of forced almost never sounds good... :P I'd just recommend patience though. Sounds like it's happening pretty soon off of @Adam Barnard&@Fiqih Trihanda's exchange. Everyone wants the next Blink release to be good right. So obviously it should be on their terms and no one else's. You can force art or inspiration. In the mean time I suggest enjoying the music that is being put out though. Personally I adored Plus 44, but it's not like I'm going to root against/begrudge every Blink album that comes before the possibly permanently shelved second Plus record... That'd be petty and ridiculous. AVA's never going away though and it's ignorant of any Blink fan to think otherwise, the bands' history cements that fact SO HARD. So might as well enjoy the ride, right? :P lol =)

  59. _.... C....

props to Ilan and his sick drumming/song writing skills

  60. R.... ....

    One of my fav

  61. J.... C....

this could be easily on the new blink 182 album with mark singin the pre-chous

    J.... C....

I can see why you say that, however to be honest, can't that basically be said about the majority of AVA/Plus 44/etc. tracks? All think Blink-182 spawned bands still sorta share some of the sound that made Blink what it is... Personally I think every song ends up being released by the right project as thee's obviously a reason that they chose to do so. Furthermore this song sounds very AVA to me... :P

However If you're just saying this is the sound/tone you're hoping for in the next album... Than yeah, that'll make a solid record... :P

  62. J.... S....

Best song on the album in my objective, internet opinion.

  63. A.... E....

You sound so fresh Tom and like your old voice it's back, I loved this song

  64. S.... ....

Fuuuuuk.... this is AMAZING... I love it when the drums kick in when he says "ghosts"!!!

  65. D.... S....

FUCKING AWESOME. I was a bit hesitant about this album after the two Love releases left me a bit underwhelmed. This record is a breath of fresh air, and this is probably the best song Tom has written in a decade.

    D.... S....

Yeah, think there was a lot going on with Love... Perhaps a slight lack of focus that sorta detracted from the reception/etc... What with the underwriting/unconventional release and the genesis of the Blink-182 resurrection, think thee was perhaps some distraction... It's funny though, I've seen several comments accusing Love II specifically of being where things bent a bit, however while admittedly I didn't get the chance to listen to it in it's entirety[Lost Regular Computer access after Love was release, but before Love II... :P] I thought the Singles were fairly solid. Not necessarily incredible, but catchy. The Surrender Remix AVA officially released via @YouTube is actually amazing...

But no yeah, this album's actually quite exciting. Feels like they've clearly recaptured their inspiration. Which I wish some of the more obnoxious Blink fans would just learn to appreciate. Most people that like AVA/Box Car/Plus 44/etc are obviously also Blink fans as it's what spawned these projects, however the reality is these projects were spawned by the need of the artists within Blink to channel inspiration that they couldn't necessarily explore within Blink. Like Blink's relationship with each other seems pretty healthy right now, what more can you really ask for. The record'll be a lot better if it's allowed to occur organically, and I honestly kind of pity the ppl that can't enjoy this album just 'cause it's not Blink. Their loss I guess... Right? :P

[[Sorry I liked your comment and wanted to respond, the second paragraph is more a response to a lot of other comments I've seen on the new vids, and isn't particularly directed at you... :P =) ]]

    D.... S....

The drummer ilan rubin contributed an awful lot to this album too dont forget. His multi instrumental contribution often goes unnoticed. Tom himself admits hes a limited musician. Rubin should get more credit!! Without him, this album wouldnt be as great!

    D.... S....

I want to amend my comment a bit, I definitely read comments from ppl who didn't care for Love II, however I've since heard Love II and have to disagree with them, I find it a stronger release than the first part. They're of course entitled to their opinions and I can see how it could take ahile to appreciate Love II, however it's got some solid tracks. Saturday Love is fantastic and The Relevator rules too... lol :P

  66. S.... M....

    AVA ftw 🙌

  67. d.... s....

    he does it again, love

  68. S.... ....

I love this song. Probably my favourite on this album. It has such strong influence from Boxcar Racer and the untiled Blink album. So good. So much more original than many of the songs on Love II.

    @*****
Dude.... I copyed the lyrics so fuck off

    E.... B....

    @Simon Goerelik haha like wtf

  70. S.... R....

the sound like box car racer :D

  71. R.... ....

The best son of AVA I think... Almost, the most powerfull

  72. M.... M....

Really sounds like boxcar racer :))

  73. N.... D....

The Chorus sounds like a Yellowcard song, like some others songs of the record

  74. J.... ....

    Best one!

  75. J.... C....

The intro reminds of the beginning of Asthenia off blink-182 self titled album hah :)

  76. Z.... H....

What's he say when it goes .. "if your feelin low here's a little hint ???? Cuz your on my mind" anyone ?

    Z.... H....

If you feel alone here's a hand from above cuz you're on my mind.

    Z.... H....

@***** that's the closest guess I've heard so far.

    Z.... H....

    @James Stowe thats definitely right

    Z.... H....

When your feeling low here's a little hand from above because your on my mind.

  77. A.... G....

I was very excited about this record when they first released the preview songs. And it was worth the wait. Tons of variety in here, getting out of that stupid circle this band was in for way too long, with the same sound in all their songs. While I don't think this beats WDNTW by any means,it is still AVA's second best work by far. Amazing record, and a huge step forward for the band. My favorite album of the year.

NOW BRING BLINK ON YOU FUCKER!

    A.... G....

Lol TDW is not their second best. I love all the albums before this. TDW is mediocre.

    A.... G....

totally agree. the album is a hugggeee step up from the last couple of albums. teenagers and rituals, tunnels and mercenaries are already some of my favorite songs of all time.

WDNTW will always be my favorite though.

    A.... G....

@YoseMiteEmery Give it time? Not that you have to come to that conclusion[that it's second best, or better than any of their other albums], however I think it is an album that is worth giving the chance to allow it to grow on you... =) Well and if it doesn't, to each their own I guess... =) lol :P

    A.... G....

    Tom's out of blink

    A.... G....

    @Impend Chaos don't you say?he wasn't 2 months ago when I posted this...

  78. R.... A....

Nooooo same lyrics all the time noo the album suck

  79. D.... A....

The intro reminds me of the great Gig in the Sky

  80. C.... ....

Yeah, this sounds that it could have been a blink song. It sounds awesome and I think we can expect a more rocky sound like this on the new blink album compared to Neighborhoods.

  81. G.... P....

    The best one, by far...

  82. E.... R....

This should've been a Blink song

  83. G.... M....

    Absolutely brilliant.
Takes me to the Boxcar era

  84. s.... ....

I can hear that Blink guitar riff 😊👌😎

    s.... ....

More like Boxcar Racer riff :D

  85. M.... A....

Anomaly , Mercenaries and Tunnels are the best ... Kiss with a spell is growing on me

    M.... A....

+Mohamed Abdelkader Hamdi Tremors is great too

  86. A.... R....

Reminds me of Not Now, but this song is amazing. You can tell that Tom wrote this one all on his own, in terms of lyrics and guitar rhythm. Its just amazing.

This and Tunnels is just..........I'm speechless

    A.... R....

Reminds me of hallucinations at the beginning

    A.... R....

He wrote it with Ilan. Ilan sang some parts of it too but it got cut off

  87. M.... M....

    Amazing!

  88. J.... C....

Does anyone know how to find these on Soundcloud?

    J.... C....

They had a Soundcloud stream yesterday for Rolling Stone but now they've taken it down.

  89. J.... M....

Do you have to have iTunes to download this album? What happened to releasing hard copies in stores?

    J.... M....

You can get hard copies in some of the exclusive packages on the website.

    J.... M....

@Benjamin V the hard copy comes blank, they give you the digital download and you can burn it to the cd they give you.

    J.... M....

    The future.

    J.... M....

@Trey Morrow Which wouldn't be a bad thing if they offered the digital download in something other than MP3 format... is a heavily compressed file really the way they want you to experience the album? It wouldn't cost them any more to put a higher quality download up for those that want it

    J.... M....

@Trey Morrow whoever invented that... "Burn your own cd"... Need to pay eighty fucking dollars to burn my own cd...

  90. E.... ....

My ears orgasmed plenty of times.

  91. A.... ....

finally, i found my favorite song. this song make me remind of Atom Willard. :(

  92. B.... K....

    Amazing.

  93. t.... t....

SO good, so glad they saved it till the album released, tunnels and this are my fav, took me three listens to absolutely love it!

  94. M.... A....

    Amazing !!!!

  95. S.... D....
