Andrew Peterson - His Heart Beats Lyrics

His heart beats, His blood begins to flow
Waking up what was dead a moment ago
And His heart beats, now everything is changed
'Cause the blood that brought us peace with God
Is racing through His veins
And His heart beats
His heart beats

He breathes in, His living lungs expand
The heavy air surrounding death turns to breath again
He breathes out, He is word and flesh once more
The Lamb of God slain for us is a Lion ready to roar
And His heart beats

So crown Him the Lord of Life
Crown Him the Lord of Love
Crown Him the Lord of All

He took one breath
And put death to death
Where is your sting, O grave?
How grave is your defeat
I know, I know His heart beats

He rises, glorified in flesh
Clothed in immortality, the firstborn from the dead
He rises, and His work's already done
So He's resting as He rises to reclaim the Bride He won
And His heart beats

So crown Him the Lord of Life
Crown Him the Lord of Love
Crown Him the Lord of All

He took one breath
And put death to death
Where is your sting, O grave?
How grave is your defeat
I know, I know His heart beats

The last enemy to be destroyed is death
The last enemy to be destroyed is death
He must reign until no enemy is left
The last enemy to be destroyed, to be destroyed is death

His heart beats, He will never die again
I know that death no longer has dominion over Him
So my heart beats with the rhythm of the saints
As I look for the seeds the King has sown
To burst up from their graves

I know, I know
He took one breath
And put death to death
Where is your sting, O grave?
How grave is your defeat
I know, I know
He took one breath
And put death to death
Where is your sting, O grave?
How grave is your defeat
How great, how great is His victory
I know, I know His heart beats
I know, I know His heart beats
His heart beats

Beautiful, one of Andrew Peterson’s best. I also love, ‘Is He Worthy’.

As a gay Christian, I have shared this on my Facebook page. And I am not ashamed to say that.

May Jesus the Messiah and His Holy Spirit lead you into all truth (John 14:17). Every Christian has something to repent of because “all have sinned and fallen short of God’s glorious standards” (Romans 3:23). We come to Him just as we are and He cleans us up for we are incapable of doing it for ourselves. Read God’s Word and ask Him to reveal to you your true identity in Christ, because the Holy Spirit who lives in born-again believers, is holy and will not co-habit with our sin, whether it is telling lies, unforgiveness, greed, murder, violence, angry outbursts or sexual immorality (anything other than faithful marriage between a man and a woman is sin). God loves us too much to leave us in our sin, especially after Jesus paid the ultimate price for our sin, so repent and be blessed!

Yet another example of why AP's music has so much depth. The more you listen, the more things you pick up on. So many layers. Since I first heard this song, I knew that the opening percussion, and indeed the percussion throughout, was mimicking a heart beat. I recently watched a video explaining how to cover Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah badly. Something clicked and I jumped back to this song. What I didn't realize is the vocal melody is basically an EKG. It's flat for the first few stanzas with only a "small murmur" in rise for one line before falling down "flat" again.. Then the pre-chorus ramps up to a crescendo in "Crown Him the Lord of All". That's the first "lub" in the familiar lub-dub cardiac cycle. Then it slowly falls line by line in the chorus (that's the "dub") eventually landing on the same "flat" line again before moving to the next verse.

Everything about this song musically screams "His Heart Beats!"

    Genius.

I’m sure you’re right: ECG in English, Echo Cardio Gram.

And that makes this even more beautiful

I think I've already commented on another song off the album, but I'll say it again - just when I didn't think AP's music could get any better, it really has! Loving this song & He Is Worthy & also All Things Together. Fantastic album, really points you to the reality of Jesus' work & 2nd coming. Wish I had words to describe its impact on me already. Thank you Andrew & thank you Lord!

It is a rare thing for me to find 1. new music that 2. I love! And I have just been introduced to not one, but TWO songs that I love. I deeply appreciate the thoughtfulness that is so apparent in the lyrical depth and richness, the clever but tame artistry, the pleasingly intuitive melodies, and the fresh insight into timeless truth found in this song, as well as "Is He Worthy." I love the persistent Scriptural groundedness of many of the lines of this song, and I love the laser focus on the EXACT moment that Jesus took that first breath that conquered death! I could go on and on about what makes this a really great song, but I just appreciate what AP is doing here.

Amazing work, Andrew. What a great, new perspective of our Savior as He takes up His life again.
I know that death no longer has dominion over Him!

I couldn't find the lyrics anywhere so I typed them up. Let me know if I got it right:

    His heart beats
    His blood begins to flow
    Waking up what was dead
    A moment ago
    And His heart beats
    Now everything has changed
Because the blood that brought us peace with God is racing through his veins

    And His heart beats
    His heart beats

The heavy air surrounding death turns to breath again
He breathes out, He is word and flesh once more
The lamb of God slain for us is a lion ready to roar

    And His heart beats

So crown him the Lord of life
Crown him the Lord of love
Crown him the Lord of all

    He took one breath
    And put death to death
    Where is your sting
Oh grave, how great is your defeat

    I know, I know
    His heart beats

    He rises
    Glorified in flesh
    Clothed in immortality
    The firstborn from the dead
    He rises

    Where is your sting
Oh grave, how great is your defeat

    I know, I know

The last enemy to be destroyed is death
The last enemy to be destroyed is death
He must reign until no enemy is left
The last enemy to be destroyed, to be destroyed is death

Thank you for typing out the lyrics!:)

    s.... ....

sharestorm only one mistake I see “how grave is your defeat” you have “how great is your defeat”. You corrected the mistake the lyrics site has they put “as they look for the seeds the King has down” you correctly put “as they look for the seeds the King has sown”. Otherwise excellent job done.

I'd venture to say this is the best song AP has ever written. And that is definitely saying something!

  27. R.... A....

"He took one breath and put death to death!" Hallelujah!

My husband I love this song! When I got your CD in the mail Thursday, these words rang out in our little home with such power! Praise God! His heart beats! And it beats for us... the unworthy, yet the chosen.

  29. D.... H....

This a fantastic album. I just heard about it (and you) a few weeks ago and thankful that I have! Thanks for your work here!

His heart beats! What wonderful news! Sin and death are conquered!

I remember hearing this at your Behold the Lamb of God Concert

I see you have made some improvements :) Awesome song, once again!

  31. D.... J....

He took one breath... and put death to death!

What a beautiful reminder of how our Lord crushed our captor, the fear of death.

Just add this to the long list of many wonderful poetic songs you've wrote Andrew.

    D.... J....

And all our other fears for that matter. Awesome song, Mr. Peterson!

So very toughing and meaningful and onspirational

I love the various Scripture passages scattered throughout this song all through the lyrics.

I love this song Andrew! I feel like the lyrics and glorious anthemic melody are reminding me to let my own heart beat. I know the lyrics are about Jesus, but we are His body, and we are brought to life as well. I have no idea how I missed out on your music before. I praise God for His role in placing "Be Kind to Yourself" on my YouTube list, and that song has blessed me so much. Andrew Peterson cd's are being added to my Amazon cart and you will be the star of my birthday box to me next month! On a more serious note. I had an emotionally broken father who was always angry, and it's always been hard to listen to male singing voices. Yet you have this fatherly love for your own children and it saturates every song with a love that heals my soul. Your music is a gift from God.
    Stephen

  34. S.... S....

Love the picture this song paints! Thank you! Your music continues to deepen my love for our Savior!
