Andrew Bird - Imitosis Lyrics

He's keeping busy
Yeah he's bleeding stones
With his machinations and his palindromes
It was anything but hear the voice
anything but hear the voice
It was anything but hear the voice
That says that we're all basically alone

Poor Professor Pynchon had only good intentions
When he put his Bunsen burners all away
And turning to a playground in a Petri dish
Where single cells would swing their fists
At anything that looks like easy prey
In this nature show that rages every day
It was then he heard his intuition say

We were all basically alone
And despite what all his studies had shown
That what's mistaken for closeness
Is just a case for mitosis
And why do some show no mercy
While others are painfully shy
Tell me doctor can you quantify
He just wants to know the reason, the reason why

Why do they congregate in groups of four
Scatter like a billion spores
And let the wind just carry them away?
How can kids be so mean?
Our famous doctor tried to glean
As he went home at the end of the day
In this nature show that rages every day
It was then he heard his intuition say

We were all basically alone
Despite what all his studies had shown
That what's mistaken for closeness
Is just a case of mitosis
Sure fatal doses of malcontent through osmosis
And why do some show no mercy
While others are painfully shy
Tell me doctor, can you quantify?
The reason why

Love the representation of soapberry bugs and their mate-guarding behavior. Perfect example of something that could be mistaken for closeness/love if one was unaware of the underlying genetic mechanisms of behavioral plasticity, which is also present in human beings. Makes perfect sense that the song after Imitosis in the Armchair Apocrypha album is called Plasticities which is then followed by Heretics. So clever, Mr. Bird.

    Pt br
    ele está se mantendo ocupado
    sim, ele está sangrando pedras
com suas maquinações e seus palíndromos
era qualquer coisa, mas ouvir a voz
que diz que todos nós estamos basicamente sozinhos

pobres Professor Pynchon tinha apenas boas intenções

    diga-me médico pode quantificar

    diga-me médico, você pode quantificar?
    a razão pela qual

Definitely one of my favorite songs ever. I recommend Devendra Banhart to all Andrew Bird fans also. Both incredibly talented and unique

in a reductionist model all reductionists are math

  55. a.... ....

I want Andy as my science teacher.

  56. G.... ....

Great song, great singer. His voice is one part Jack Johnson, one part Nick Drake and a preponderance of his own excellence. He has a new fan.

  57. C.... W....

in a reductionist model all biology is chemistry, all chemistry is physics and all physics is math

  58. b.... k....

  62. M.... M....

Love for your intelligent lyrics and wonderful music from Portugal!

  63. S.... ....

it's definitely in my head whenever I hear this song. So thanks for that! ;D

  64. l.... ....

It does! Maybe some hidden message we've uncovered ;)

  65. S.... ....

Gives a whole new meaning to the line "Tell me Doctor can you quantify?" ;)

  66. l.... ....

Any Whovians out there? Did y'all see the lines on the wall at 1:57 :) Theres loads more at 2:18, can't think why ;)

  67. J.... B....

It's funny because biology is just applied chemistry which is just applied physics which is just applied mathematics. So basically you're all right.

  68. e.... ....

    Science + Music = Awesomeness

  69. B.... J....

Interesting thing about bird- he doesn't really know or care too much about science lol

  70. D.... S....

your point is irrelevant to math being the purest science.

  71. A.... Z....

    *Mathematical biochemistry.

  72. M.... ....

This was the first Andrew Bird song I'd ever heard, and it's still my favourite.

  73. D.... S....

really the first guy is right. Math is the purist science. No math no bio, no chem, no bio chem.

  74. E.... ....

no, it's engineering. The bugs are robots

  75. G.... R....

    big deal

  76. v.... ....

and the basis of physics? math. would you look at that, we've gone in a full circle.

  77. D.... ....

    sounds like Sting!

  78. B.... E....

    Alas, it's actually biochemical engineering.

  79. N.... ....

Plz This song uses a chord progression super common in Boogaloo and latin music.

    See /watch?v=XU8Yesm6sAc and /watch?v=MXp413NynFk

  80. F.... D....

    I love it...

  81. B.... S....

The bass in this song is good as hell

  82. m.... ....

This guy buttoned both buttons on his jacket (rather than just the top button) -- that's why it doesn't hang right.

  83. S.... A....

    Great song! Great video!!

  84. S.... W....

Which song? I wanna hear lol

  85. V.... R....

I really hope you are coming to Mexico soon!

  86. p.... ....

this song was released a long time before Gotye released his first song !

  87. J.... C....

Is it really that are you coming to Lima Peru? I just finished to watch this video for first time. I would like to see and hear this music live. (Sorry for my bad english)

  88. W.... B....

Seeing this video on TV is what first got me interested in indie rock and stop-motion animation, and Andrew Bird has never ceased to be a fantastic performer and inspiration.

  89. n.... ....

    dude problem with socks?

  90. A.... ....

    Anyone else doing homework?

  91. c.... ....

Andrew Bird is so scientific. :) He's amazing.

  92. s.... ....

gave this guy a ride once to a mutual friend's show, great guy

  93. E.... ....

    Gotye copied this song hard

  94. C.... A....

He looks like a short-haired Tiny Tim with Jack Johnson's voice.

  95. T.... S....

Andrew Bird = Sexiest man alive.

  96. K.... K....

[INITIATE THICK-RIMMED GLASSES] I liked Andrew Bird before it was cool to.
