Anderson, Lynn - Sunday Morning Coming Down Lyrics

Well, I woke up Sunday morning with no way to hold my head that didn't hurt
And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad, so I had one more for desert
Then I fumbled in my closet to my clothes and found my cleanest dirty skirt
And I washed my face and combed my hair stumbled down the stair to greet the day

I'd smoke my mind the night before with cigarettes and songs I've been a-picking
But I lit my first and watched the small kid cursin' at a can that he was kicking
Then I crossed the empty street and caught
The Sunday smell of someone frying chicken
And it took me back to something that I'd lost somewhere somehow along the way

On the Sunday morning sidewalk wishing, Lord, that I was stoned
'Cause there's something in a Sunday makes a body feel alone
And there's nothing short of dying half as lonely as the sound
Of the sleeping city sidewalk, Sunday morning coming down

In the park, I saw a daddy with the laughing little girl that he was swinging
And I stopped beside a Sunday school and listened to the songs they were singing
Then I headed back for home and somewhere far away a lonely bell was ringing
And it echoed through the canyon like the disappearing dreams of yesterday

On the Sunday morning sidewalk wishing, Lord, that I was stoned
'Cause there's something in a Sunday makes a body feel alone
And there's nothing short of dying half as lonely as the sound
Of the sleeping city sidewalk, Sunday morning coming down

Anderson, Lynn Sunday Morning Coming Down Comments
  1. N.... J....

    Love Lynn Anderson's version
Well I woke up Sunday morning,
With no way to hold my head that didn't hurt.
And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad,
So I had one more for dessert.
Then I fumbled through my closet for my clothes,
And found my cleanest dirty shirt.
An' I shaved my face and combed my hair,
An' stumbled down the stairs to meet the day.

I'd smoked my brain the night before,
On cigarettes and songs I'd been pickin'.
But I lit my first and watched a small kid,
Cussin' at a can that he was kicking.
Then I crossed the empty street,
'n caught the Sunday smell of someone fryin' chicken.
And it took me back to somethin',
That I'd lost somehow, somewhere along the way.

    On the Sunday morning sidewalk,
Wishing, Lord, that I was stoned.
'Cos there's something in a Sunday,
    Makes a body feel alone.
And there's nothin' short of dyin',
Half as lonesome as the sound,
    On the sleepin' city sidewalks:
    Sunday mornin' comin' down.

In the park I saw a daddy,
With a laughin' little girl who he was swingin'.
And I stopped beside a Sunday school,
And listened to the song they were singin'.
Then I headed back for home,
And somewhere far away a lonely bell was ringin'.
And it echoed through the canyons,
Like the disappearing dreams of yesterday.

    On the Sunday morning sidewalk,
Wishing, Lord, that I was stoned.
'Cos there's something in a Sunday,
    Makes a body feel alone.
And there's nothin' short of dyin',
Half as lonesome as the sound,
    On the sleepin' city sidewalks:
    Sunday mornin' comin' down.

A very sad way to spend a Sunday or any day.

  10. S.... t....

    yesssssss love her

  11. S.... F....

Her performance in the verses of this song is so immensely great that it squeezes even her own other hits. The chorus is a bit overloaded, and the add-ons in second verse are out of line, slight to un-serious.
But whenever she is undisturbed, solo, oh man, I get goosebumbs.

  12. E.... B....

she was Once beautiful...she died fat & ugly like a drunk/ dope addict

    E.... B....

  25. j.... m....

I miss you more and more every day, beautiful lady!! I was just a child in 1970 when you released this on your "Rose Garden' album, an album I begged my mom to buy for me, which didn't take a lot of persuading. She loved you too! I hope you're singing to her in heaven now!! God rest and love you!

    j.... m....

Lynn Anderson left one beautiful mark on this world. R.I.P. and thank you for sharing your lovely songs and your lovely self. <3

    D.... S....

Diane Smith at her death she looked like Keith Richards

    D.... S....

I 💘 Lynn. she was the first cassette I ever had in 1974, I was 14. I knew the words to every song. I love Rose Garden.

    D.... S....

Edward, that comment about Lynn was in bad taste. She was a wonderful person. RIP Lynn.

    D.... S....

@Edward Baggett You're a fuckin idiot. She was a beauty til the day she died.

    D.... S....

Come on.. Everybody looks a little like Keith Richards when they are 70+ and dead for a week. Keith has looked like a dead man for decades tho. I wonder if he can die at all..!? I once met Lynn Anderson in Nashville in 2010, she was actually very cheerful and lovely. I am sad to find out just now that she has passed away.

  29. C.... M....

    Rest in peace, Lynn Anderson!~

  30. C.... C....

    Love you, Lynn .

This will always take me back to my Mom & Dads music, how I love it.. I had no idea at the time it would become my music as well.

  38. A.... ....

    This song is so refreshing.

  39. o.... ....

@Lynn Anderson you have an amazing voice.

  40. R.... R....

Could you tell me which album this is off?

    R.... R....

@rlriehn85 off the album Rose Garden

    R.... R....

Thanks! I found a copy of the album. Love her rendition of this song!

  41. o.... c....

lynns songs remind me of the times we used to go to dances in the church hall they were called hops back then   ,better tmes back then .that for sure .go raibh maith agat vinyl

  42. L.... A....

I was so smashed when this was recorded.

    L.... A....

    On what? Beer? Wine? Whiskey?

    L.... A....

Who using Lynn's picture and name and making bad remarks about her?

  43. I.... C....

LIVE THIS SONG ALL MY LIFE I,M SORRY TO SAY

  44. s.... ....

She did a perfect job on this one..
I was born in the late 70's, but when I hear this song, I feel like I grow up in the 70's, I mean, it's like I can feel the vibes of that time..

  45. o.... ....

Lynn Anderson is brilliant and this is very nice but the lyrics lend themselves to a male singer. He might not have the greatest voice but I, personally, think that nobody sings Kris Kristofferson songs better than Kris himself. This is no exception.

  46. m.... ....

Rose garden was recorded by 8 men and did not go anywhere until Lynn recorded it.

  47. m.... ....

First off, to vmarkhills, Lynn does not do that.  Just to clarify that for you and others.  This actually the best version of this song ever recorded.

  48. S.... ....

    Beautiful woman & voice

  49. S.... ....

Hers is the version I grew up listening to in the '70s.  The voice of an angel.

  50. S.... W....

Flooding ALL White countries and ONLY White countries with non-Whites and then forcing assimilation is a program of White genocide.

Africa will still be full of Africans
Asia will still be full of Asians.
Only White children will suffer from this.

Read the UN genocide conventions: It is genocide, White Genocide.

They say they are anti-racist. What they are is anti-White.
    Anti-racist is a code word for anti-White

  51. F.... B....

The song itself is great. To those who have issues. Time for you to to lay down and die like the rest. HatCraned and such.

  52. K.... C....

    Agreed!

  53. D.... H....

And it took me back to somethin', That I'd lost somehow, somewhere along the way. :*(

  54. l.... ....

great production on this one. i had the album rose garden for many years. it had i wish iwas a little boy again.

  55. b.... ....

    Nothing to compare.

  56. r.... r....

So what! he must have loved her, he let her record it-anyway it's still Lynn Anderson, and who cares.

  57. p.... ....

    JUST TOO GOOD!

  58. b.... ....

Not the same feel as when Kris. or Johnny, did it. But, in all fairness Lynn is a lot better looking ;-)

  59. w.... ....

Kristofferson is a Great Writter, Not so much on singing.
    In reply to Willin NewHaven

  60. d.... ....

"Cleanest dirty skirt" for "cleanest dirty shirt"? LOL.

I think what makes Johnny's version work is that you really believe he had a few Sunday mornings just like the one he's singing about. OTOH, I did like one thing in Lynn's version: where you actually hear what the children might be singing in Sunday school. It makes an interesting counterpoint.

    d.... ....

Bless her heart, it sounds like she's smiling all the way through it.

  61. w.... ....

No one Sings this song as good as John Cash, Not even the Great Ray Price

  62. M.... B....

    I had a crush on her as a kid...what a gorgeous woman...wow!

    M.... B....

so did I ... hottest country music star of her era, hands down.

  63. L.... T....

But she does have the credibility to endorse the words, she is nonetheless credible as a person to sing harsh, trashy stuff. Like in the song Fancy, the words are REALLY intense...

  64. o.... ....

starr522 then you need new ears and your an idiot.

  65. T.... D....

It wasn't written FOR him by Kris Kristofferson. It was written by Kris Kristofferson. That makes it a Kris Kristofferson song... forever.

  66. j.... c....

Sorry, this is just not believable from this woman

  67. l.... h....

Who did this song first Cash or Anderson? I always thought it was done better by a Women becouse of the Father pushing the Girl on the Swing. I also remenber hearing Anderson sing it first

  68. T.... ....

Understand your sentiment completely. It's what keeps me coming to YouTube, I think.

  69. j.... b....

Somehow "cleanest dirty skirt" doesn't fit a female country music singer after a night of pickin. Sounds more like a bag lady.

  70. v.... ....

bet lynn anderson is a hoot when she's stoned!

  71. K.... P....

Its nowhere close to something in the higher hights concerning music. Buts its a nice piece anyway..... could i make it better? prrobably no Dont live and think this horse-jazz is so fantastic.Even if you are a readneck middlewestern american!

  72. K.... J....

No its a Johnny cash song, written for him by Kris Kristofferson when Kristofferson was just starting out in the music business.

  73. K.... J....

I wouldn't say Kris Kristofferson was underrated at all, as he and Willie Nelson are two of the most respected song writers in music and always have and always will be. and long may they carry on.

  74. k.... ....

that's just a little too much arranging. Less is more.

  75. r.... ....

Man,this was a good looking woman right there.Great version of this song also.

  76. T.... D....

This is not a Johnny Cash song... it's a KRIS KRISTOFFERSON song.

  77. .... M....

    this version sounds melancholic

  78. P.... k....

on the contrary with most of the comments here, i find this song so painfully beautiful, pure and sincere i actually didn't hear the version i didn't like yet. it's probably my favourite song in the world, so i listened to all versions i could find. kris, johnny, willie, lynn, vikki carr, mullins, trisha yearwood (i was sceptical here because i didn't know her before and she looked like one of the cheap pop singers), stevens, price ... it's great to have a song that so many people can rely to.

  79. o.... ....

You must listen to the versions of this song by Vicky Carr and Sammi Smith they are the BEST!

  80. j.... c....

Lynn Anderson has always sang with a smile in her voice, that's why down and out songs are the best songs for her, but she is still one of the best female voices in music.

  81. b.... ....

John Cash does it nicely, Lyn Anderson has the voice, but this is a down-and-out song and nobody, no one does it better than the fella who wrote it.

  82. w.... ....

    @A1l2l2e2n4

it's a Kris Kristofferson song. He also wrote Me and Bobby McGhee

  83. o.... ....

What about the Vickie Carr version.I dont know but to me thats the best.

  84. A.... Z....

She sounds like an angel, but this is a Johnny Cash song and no one can sing it like him.The song is good, but i hadn't the same feeling as when i hear johnny cash's Sunday Morning Coming down.

  85. D.... O....

Yes! So underrated and so brilliant.
A song of his could make me cry like no other.
Loved him when I was young and love him now.

  86. S.... C....

    dirty skirt

  87. s.... h....

Kris Kristofferson wrote this song and recorded for his 1st album and johnny cash heard it and he made cover of song and cash loved the song and he sang on evry shows he did and the song became johnny cash song

  88. M.... L....

Everytime I come across an awesome song-it turns out to written by Kris

  89. L.... R....

    @burberry73 - AMEN!!!!

  90. L.... R....

This is a KRIS KRISTOFFERSON song... and always will be.... but I had this album of Lynn Anderson when I was a little girl and remember listening to her version of this song over and over again.....

  91. o.... ....

one of the most beutiful songs ever written.

  92. g.... ....

    @A1l2l2e2n4
I agree that this song always reminds me of Jonny cash to, even though it was written by Kris Kristofferson.

    Mark...

  93. b.... ....

Love the way Lynn Anderson sings this ....

  94. p.... ....

@sanger2005 My Opa had the 8 track of Lynn A. the only 8 track he owned...

  95. p.... ....

,, [So I had one more for desert]!

  96. K.... ....

Lynn Anderson was wishing to be stoned???????????????

  97. c.... ....

    @RockyTheEagle
IMO Vicky Carr has the best female interpretation of the song, but I like Kristofferson's version best of all.

  98. S.... L....

I never knew Johnny Cash sang the original version. My dad had this cassette tape from the early 70's and we always played it on our fishing trips. I adore this song so much and love how Lynn sings it. I am only 42 years old, so I would not have stumbled across the Johnny Cash version since we didn't have it. I guess it boils down to which version you were exposed to first, generation, etc. All I know it gives a good feeling overall.
