She's a good singer, but this particular song just doesn't sound right. I think the people who criticised her performance are right. Not one of her finest performances for sure, even if the interpretation is pretty daring.

This is definitely one of her best jazz covers. You'd really have to understand Amy's artistic directions in order to understand why she things in such a distinct manner. Every artist is to each is own.

kayteeelle she definitely did . I'm a massive fan from before she went mainstream and as soon as rehab dropped I knew her voice had changed and not for the better . we don't stay delusional. That being said she is still queen and due all respect from beginning to end

Yes... let’s not pretend otherwise, because Amy didn’t either. Just watch her Brazil 2011 gigs - she couldn’t reach the notes as well and her voice would break, and the worst part was that when this happened you could see her roll her eyes and grit her teeth. At one point she actually yelled “FUCK” and stopped singing. Also when she was recording with Tony Bennett she got very frustrated because she wasn’t able to sing the way she wanted to as her voice kept breaking. THIS BEING SAID, even with her voice damaged she still sounded powerful and beautiful.

So many people have a good voice that sounds similar to others, but with Amy she's so unique and I can't think of anyone like her or that sounds like her. Love you Amy! R.I.P Beautiful

I think people need to understand that Amy had something that a lot of people can't touch. Tone. her tone is so uniquely hers. I have yet to find an artist whose work shows off the originality of the voice.

As a big fan of jazz, I agree with @drjazz862, but not on everything. Amy did "easy" jazz, big fans of the genre, purist, wont like iit at all. This is the kind of tunes that you can hear on the big radio channels. Who here knows true jazz and can say this cover is worth the real potential of the composition ? Amy can't beat geniuses like Monk, Jarrett or, my favourite version, Hermeto Pascoal... However, this cover could be a great song if it didnt ruin the original composition. In his genre, Amy was a great singer. But this isn't jazz, this is gateway jazz, that doesn't dig deep.

Listen to her 2004 North Sea Jazz Festival concert and you might have a change of heart. Also understand she was not even 20 when she recorded this song. Personally, I FEEL it and and it feels like she's taking me to heaven.

Do you know how hard it is to make a melody come alive like this? She is composing while singing, which - to do even moderately well - is exceedingly difficult. I have been a 'purist' jazz fan for over 55 years and IMHO Amy is right up there with three of the most gifted - Billie, Ella and Nina - 'legends' whose music still lives on.

She did jazz in her way and her style, i think that is what special in this cover. because she's herself, she's not trying to be someone else. This cover is not other than magical to the ear

I believe Amy is (was) much, much better than Janis. The musical talent alone, the vocals (how she hits the notes, the range) is far superior IMO.

It's funny before she died the majority of people said this was a terrible cover and ruined the song, not everyone loves it.
