Amy Grant - If These Walls Could Speak Lyrics

If these old walls
If these old walls could speak
Of things that they remembered well
Stories and faces dearly held
A couple in love
Livin' week to week
Rooms full of laughter
If these walls could speak

If these old halls
If hallowed halls could talk
These would have a tale to tell
Of sun goin' down and dinner bell
And children playing at hide and seek
From floor to rafter
If these halls could speak

They would tell you that I'm sorry
For bein' cold and blind and weak
They would tell you that it's only
That I have a stubborn streak
If these walls could speak

If these old fashioned window panes were eyes
I guess they would have seen it all
Each little tear and sigh and footfall
And every dream that we came to seek
Or followed after
If these walls could speak

They would tell you that I owe you
More than I could ever pay
Here's someone who really loves you
Don't ever go away
That's what these walls would say

They would tell you that I owe you
More than I could ever pay
Here's someone who really loves you
Don't ever go away
That's what these walls would say
That's what these walls would say
That's what these walls would say

Amy Grant If These Walls Could Speak Comments
  1. J.... K....

My mom passed away years ago and I was trying to think of a song to honor her. I heard this song from Amy and I could not have found a better one. If the walls of our house could have spoken I can only imagine the stories that would have been told about my mom. Her love, her compassion, all the trials she went thru for me and my sisters. Of the love she felt for our father. The fun times and the sad. The joy of living and the horrible time of losing my mom. The walls would speak of all this. Hurts still today but I know I got this song right. For Mom. I love you and miss you still. Until that time I will get to see you again.

I have been loving Amy's music for over 40years. God blessed us with Amy on 11/25/1960. What a wonderful gift to the World! I love this little angel. [email protected]

  3. M.... J....

would like to hear The Clash or Motorhead cover this song

  4. D.... S....

If you like Amy Grant or Jimmy Webb, I suggest you listen to their collaboration called The Animals' Christmas. It also features Art Garfunkel and a boys' choir. It's the kind of Christmas album that makes you feel as though you're right there in the desert on that cold night.

  5. J.... C....

    I need to know..

    Are you listening?

Ms. Amy Grant has carried my broken hurting soul through so much! Only God knows. This is the song that soothes me. It is the life I was never allowed to live. Never even given the chance to be a part of anything not allowed to belong; only a wished for life now mostly gone. But all my life, this song and her songs have carried me through great suffering. Thank You Amy Grant 💝💝💝

Thanks for printing Jimmy's Layne Webb's lyrics and music. Amy owns this song. wow !!!!!!!!!!!

  15. S.... M....

This beautiful song has been covered by so many different artists but I think Amy's version does this song the most justice. Shawn Colvin's is a pretty close second however

    S.... M....

What about Nanci Griffith and Glen Campbell?

    S.... M....

This is the only version i like

  16. C.... b....

    jms yep

  17. M.... G....

I found out this was not written by the fore mentioned it was written by some one else saw the late legend glen campbell sing it

    M.... G....

Jimmy Webb wrote it. He and Glen did a slew of hits together, including “Galveston” and “Wichita Lineman.” Patti Griffith and Shawn Colvin have covered this as well.

  18. M.... G....

This very beautiful song by amy grant sung and written by the vastly under rated singer songwriter amy grant the piano is just is so spine tingling on this song coupled with amys superb vocal chill facter perfection

    M.... G....

Not written by Amy but by Jimmy Webb.

  19. 1.... ....

Would to hear Amy do this song with Our Stevie.......would be perfect beyond words....

  20. S.... P....

I love this song cuz it is very true of all of us who come to know the Lord.

  21. D.... B....

i may have to move soon and leave my home...and this song is now meaning even more. This song has been so meaningful to me in that I had a divorce in 1987 that I still regret. Ive forgiven myself but the loss is forever. This song is about failing those we love. LOVE Her music..

    D.... B....

This song was penned by the great Jimmy Webb. All of his songs are brilliant. Check out Patti Griffith, Shawn Colvin, and Glen Campbell’s cover of this. They all do it justice. Webb also wrote Galveston, Wichita Lineman, and MacArthur Park. All lyrically brilliant gems.

    D.... B....

Check out the late great Townes Van Zandt. Emmylou Harris’ cover of “Pancho and Lefty” kills me every time. Same goes for “If I Needed You.” The man was a genius and tortured soul. Rest In Peace Townes.

  22. S.... a....

This song makes me cry every time I hear it. I don't move often and I get attached to people and things a lot. The few times that I do move are earth shattering and I get very sad. This song makes me weep over the places that I have lived in. Thank you old houses....if any of you ever watched the Disney movie "the Brave Little Toaster," you would totally get me! I love this song. I love Glenn's and Amy's. By the way, Panda Love, I am really sorry about your school. Have a good cry when you need to, and have some funny memories when you gotta, and pray when you need to move on. Take care, ya'll.

one of her all time best.

  31. .... ....

This song still has some power to remind me of something I lost long time ago, along with many impressive comments from people around the world. It has been staying deep in my heart, regardless of time and place.

  32. L.... B....

This song has stuck in my head from the moment I heard it. My children, my children, I turned around and they were gone-all the life left me and the walls were speaking to me.  I lost them before I should have. I dedicate this song to my treasures-my only treasures.  It is like this song was pulled out of my heart and my head. It is just how I feel.  I am sorry to my beautiful girls. Nicci, Jordan, Shelby, and Jade-as well as my former husbands children-Taylor and Josh.  You kids- I am sorry for being cold. and blind, and weak, they would tell you that it's only that I have a stubborn streak-but you are my heart, and you are all so far away.  You have forgotten about me and gone on with your lives. I am happy for that and that they made it despite of me. I made too many mistakes.

    L.... B....

Hi Laura. It is sad to read this. Your honesty is amazing, and comes (I guess) from a place of deep regret for some things you've done/not done in your life. Truth is we've all made stupid mistakes - some just have bigger, less fixable consequences. I don't want to preach here, but God really does get that. That is why he asks us to stop beating ourselves up and just grab on to Him. What does that look like? I think different for everyone. I'm not talking church here, although a good church is a really good idea. I'm saying that the One who speaks through those walls around you really gets you. And loves you. He experienced life with all its wonder and weirdness and pain in the form of Jesus. Call on Him. And seeing this thread is on an Amy Grant song, I'll quote something she said in a recent interview: "There's no point in praying if it doesn't come from an honest place," Grant said. "I have learned that, as shameful as it can be, it's important to at least speak what it is I see to be the truth out to God and to myself. We're all human, and our battle's not against flesh and blood—there's always a spiritual battle going on. Sometimes you have to just say, I'm not sure how I got where I am right now, but God, please just be here right now, and help me.".   All the best.

    L.... B....

+Laura Bullock I came to Faith in my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ about the time that this song was released. My family was intact then and my children were young but life has it's twists and turns and I have since lost everything and every one since those bitter sweet days. my heart breaks to the words of this song and it fills me with tearful sadness when I hear it and long for the wholeness that was my life then yet through all of my pain and loss I still cling to my Lord. I know your pain Laura and pray you find peace.

  33. g.... ....

I always said this was the strongest song on the album.  It gives me such a dry ache.  When I first heard it I imagined it being about someone in my future.

    g.... ....

+greatsea I'd been listening to this album in my car for quite awhile and one day this song just HIT me. It just lept out at me. I almost had to pull over to the side of the road!

  34. T.... ....

Yes, :-), I understand how that is possible!:-) Jimmy's songs, in a very unique way, and bare with me, are almost MORE than songs, tunes, they touch so much more than my aural senses, very hard to explain. I'll listen to Rivers doing, "Sidewalk Song, 27th Street, and "Do What you Gotta Do" and they put me in an ageless trance, there is something more there than music, and I don't know how to explain.

  35. R.... C....
