Amy Grant - How Can We See That Far Lyrics

We said our promises by candlelight
You held my hands, I was dressed in white
We were young
How can we see that far?
How can we see that far?

I knew I wanted you like no one else
I told my momma that I'd found myself
In your eyes
How can we see that far?
How can we see that far?

But like your daddy said
The same sun that melts the wax can harden clay
And the same rain that drowns the rat will grow the hay
And the mighty wind that knocks us down
If we lean into it
Will drive our fears away

And when I woke you in the dead of night
To hold my hands, push away the fright
Life had come - a son
How can we see that far?
How can we see that far?

Yeah we were nervous and a little scared
Until the music of our baby's cry
Filled the air
How can we see that far?
How can we see that far?

But like your daddy said
The same sun that melts the wax can harden clay
And the same rain that drowns the rat will grow the hay
And the mighty wind that knocks us down
If we lean into it
Will drive our fears away

We might die
We might die
We could hurt each other badly
Do things, things so hard to forgive
Oh and if time is not our friend
Your mind might forget me before the end
And oh I cannot
I cannot look that far

But like your daddy said
How can we see that far?
The same sun that melts the wax can harden clay
And the same rain that drowns the rat will grow the hay
And the mighty wind that knocks us down
If we lean into it
How can we see that far?
Will drive our fears away
It's the same sun, yeah
And the same rain
It's the same sun
And the same rain

    /////

And the mighty wind that knocks us down
    If we lean into it
    Will drive our fears away.
And then I woke you in the dead of night
To hold my hands, push away the fright
Life had come (how can we see that far?) - a son
How can we see that far?
Yeah, we were nervous and a little scared
Until the music of our baby's cry
    Filled the air
How can we see that far? (How can we see that far?)
    But like your daddy said
The same sun that melts the wax can harden clay
And the same rain that drowns the rat will grow the hay
And the mighty wind that knocks us down
    If we lean into it
    Will drive our fears away.
    We might die
    We might live
We could hurt each other badly
Do things, things so hard to forgive
Ooh, and if time is not our friend
Your mind might forget me before the end
    And oh, I cannot
    I cannot look that far.
    But like your daddy said
(How can we see that far?)
The same sun that melts the wax can harden clay
And the same rain that drowns the rat will grow the hay
And the mighty wind that knocks us down
    If we lean into it
How can we see that far?
    Gotta lean into it
    Will drive our fears away
    It's the same sun, yeah
    And the same rain
    It's the same sun
    And the same rain.

I remember listening to this song as a teen. Amy Grant will forever be a part of my soul with her music.

  5. A.... C....

    I LOVE i t.

  6. A.... W....

What I like about this song is that if you didn’t know Amy was a Christian singer you would still appreciate it as a great tune regardless- maybe that was her message. Where is she now? Beautiful.

  7. b.... ....

Poor woman. She was in over her head: marriage, kids, and fame. This song is beautiful... it is also a testimony to her feelings of overwhelm in that period of her life.

  8. M.... P....

I haven't heard this song since I was a child. This was a dark time in my life, and listening to it now after all this time, I find myself feeling the same dark feelings I did back then.. I wish I could put those feelings into words...

  9. H.... ....

I know we can't see what is down the road, but I hold you in my heart forever, regardless. Always.

  11. c.... b....

Her first son was called matt have you seen pictures of her blonde china white skinned ancestors wish I was blond

  12. D.... D....

This is undoubtedly the most romantic love song ever made! We love you Amy Grant!

  13. c.... b....

i wood just say that it is more christian stoicism. As far as i can tell amy grant might be what you label call a platonic christian like c,s lewis there is a great strain of stoic thought in christianity. but really wee all have fears of what might or might not happen get married i mean jesus adam and eve did it. if things go wrong shit happens.

  14. W.... ....

Helps me dream and have hope

  15. a.... b....

just so dreamy and surreal..... and just a beautiful song.... the lyrics are just beautiful ...and real ....and wonderful.... and just full of romanticism ...and hope ... and inspiration

  16. B.... R....

This song reminds me of my life I've been married for eighteen years and i was only seventeen when i did and i loved him since i was thirteen and all this time he never really felt the same i forced the relationship i was so young and i guess i thought time would make things better but now there is a lot of resentment on both ends. My life has been wasted on a man who never really loved me and the pain knowing it is unbearable 💔

  17. J.... H....

    Maravilhoso esse hino

  18. M.... M....

I was in our dark car, and rain would patter on the windshields. I would rest my head comfortably at the plush backseat, while the relaxing, elegant sounds of this track would infiltrate my ears. It would assure me of a safe arrival at home from a busy day at school. 🎧

  19. G.... ....

I wore this album out in '91 and '92, lol! (I had it on cassette, too, lol) I still have the tape, actually. I hadn't listened to in maybe 10 years so I popped it into my (slightly older) cd/tape player (which also amazingly still works). Sadly the audio wasn't the best, but it worked well enough. This was always my favorite on the album! It's beautifully airy, wispy and thought, image and emotion provoking. This song was kind of overlooked, I thought. everyone paid so much attention to Baby Baby and Every Heartbeat- which are great songs, but this one really stands out to me. And even after all these years, it still has a unique sound. Not many songs sound like this and can evoke emotion like this one can.

    G.... ....

100% agree. I think it's very underrated and actually quite profound.

    I agree

  37. i.... ....

a young couple getting married having kids etc....are nervous about the future&their choices ..... all the imagery, the father says...'the same sun that melts wax can harden clay' represent life's trials they possibly can destroy us like melting a candle, or produce something beautiful ie. harden clay....don't know if it is particularly gospel, except I was once told, we all go thru trials, but we choose to go thru them with or without God(who says be grateful for them they produce character)

  38. Y.... M....

I love Amy grant's voice... It's very reassuring and comforting and kind

Something about Amy's voice..so comforting. First bought this CD about 6 weeks after it was debuted. Lost it to one of my roommates. Rather, she lost it. Bought this CD again in 2001.. lost it due to moving around so much.. finally got the CD again 3 years ago. still have it, thank God. Plan on holding on to it forever. Love Amy. She has stood the test of time. what a lucrative career she has had.
