Amy Grant - Ask Me Lyrics

I see her as a little girl hiding in her room
She takes another bath and she sprays her Momma's perfume
To try to wipe away the scent he left behind
But it haunts her mind

You see she's his little rag, nothing more than just a waif
And he's mopping up his need, she is tired and afraid
Maybe she'll find a way through these awful years to disappear

Ask me if I think there's a God up in the heaven
Where did He go in the middle of her shame?
Ask me if I think there's a God up in the heavens
I see no mercy and no one down here's naming names
Nobody's naming names

Now she's looking in the mirror at a lovely woman face
No more frightened little girl, like she's gone without a trace
Still she leaves the light burning in the hall
It's hard to sleep at all

So she crawls up in her bed acting quiet as a mouse
Deep inside she's listening for a creaking in the house
But no one's left to harm her, she's finally safe and sound
There's a peace she has found

Ask her how she knows there's a God up in the heaven
Where did He go in the middle of her shame?
Ask her how she knows there's a God up in the heavens
She said His mercy is bringing her life again

Ask me how I know there's a God up in the heaven
(How do you know?)
Where did He go in the middle of her shame
(Where did he go?)
Ask me how I know there's a God up in the heavens
(How do you know?)
She said His mercy is bringing her life again
She's coming to life again
He's in the middle of her pain
In the middle of her shame
Mercy brings life
He's in the middle
Mercy in the middle

So ask me how I know
Ask me how I know, yeah
Ask me how I know there's a God up in the heavens
(How do you know?)
Ask me how I know there's a God up in the heavens
(How do you know?)
Yeah, ask me how I know
(How do you know?)
Ask me
Ask me
Ask me how I know
(How do you know?)
There's a God up in the heavens
Ask me how I know there's a God up in the heavens

  4. d.... ....

I have always loved this song but until about two months ago never fully understood the lyrics. My older brother molested me.10-14

  5. T.... D....

As a defender of victims of abuse, and a survivor...despite my atheism, I love this message...there is a strength within us...and if you profess to be a christian, and condemn victims of sexual assault for not coming out sooner...YOU are the reason.

  6. K.... C....

Aside from the theme and story behind the song, there are also a couple of musical items here that really work for me: The general piano background, which is there, but behind the scene, so to speak...
...which then leaps right to the forefront as a driving "powerline" beginning at 2:53. A major (not minor) decending line, which renews itself. Symbolic of the entire story of recovery in the song, IMO.
    Works for me.

To all the Jehovah’s Witnesses abused by that EVIL cult, God bless you All! X

  8. K.... C....

Any memorable tune (at least for me) has a "musical moment" and for me it's that powerful, driving, decending top-line which begins at 2:53 and carries through to the end.
You can't miss the actual message behind the song either, even if you can't hear a single note.

  9. C.... M....

Under rated song. But no one really likes the lyrics...too real. With live from a heavy heart

  10. A.... S....

I can relate to this! To the ppl who messed up my life!  I hate them all! FU VA

  11. H.... A....

This song is to me about survival. Survival during child abuse. ❤️❤️❤️

  12. B.... B....

And I’m 40 years old and it’s been years ago and the boy is in jail and I’m so happy it’s over

  13. B.... B....

I remember when I was in junior high school a boy molested me in class so I told my teacher he touched me and he was suspended from school

  14. S.... L....

    I’m frightened little girl

    S.... L....

I am here for you to talk too and j will help you. You do not deserve to suffer like so many of us still suffering from our abuse.

  15. B.... ....

Never heard this song before, but its very sad.

    B.... ....

    But not the ending!

  16. N.... ....

    These lyrics are so amazing.

  17. K.... B....

Beautiful song but anyone who thinks god has mercy while you were raped is delusional. If you went through that traumatic experience then I respect you wanting to believe anything that wants you to help you get through it. Anyone who thinks god was with you during that experience is just plain stupid.

    K.... B....

I respect that you believe our faith to be misguided, but I would like to point out that calling some survivors "delusional" or "stupid" is, in many cases, the same kind of emotional abuse we suffered when we were raped...
you're fielding the same scrimmage as "why does God let all those African children starve to death?" and badgering sexual abuse survivors...
...it's about as bad as protesting abortion clinics... "hey lets go emotionally abuse vulnerable young women seeking medical help!"

    K.... B....

Those who think God shows mercy during a time like that are people who are just unable to accept there ISN'T a God. It's like when you are a kid and you start doubting the existence of Santa Claus....you don't want to face the reality he doesn't exist because it sucks, and because it takes all the fun out of the holiday. And feel stupid because you believed such a farce. Have pity for those who believe in God, because they'd rather lie to themselves than face reality. It's like an adult waiting for Santa to come down the chimney, and when he doesn't, they scramble to come up with some dumb excuse.

    K.... B....

Not at all. Just ask a combat vet: "There are no athiests in foxholes."

  18. .... ....

    love this song

  19. M.... M....

Although this was from the album "Heart In Motion," which was released in the 1990s, the track has that undeniable, irresistible 1980's magic texture, that new wave sound akin to songs like Kim Carnes' "Bette Davis Eyes," which gives it sophistication and elegance. 🎧

    M.... M....

Hadn't occured to me, but you are quite right. The cutoff drum track is right out of "BDE."

  20. R.... B....

Ask me how i know there's a God up in the heavens

  21. M.... C....

    Very powerful song.......damn.

  22. M.... P....

I'm a victim of child sex abuse. This song came out when all of that was happening. It made me sad.

  23. G.... B....

My 6th grade teacher molested me. I'm almost 35, and even 24 years after it all happened, it haunts me. Sometimes I feel like it makes me less of a man. Other times I feel like i deserved it, especially when I hear other folks in my town talking about him like he's some kind of saint, beloved teacher and coach, etc.

    G.... B....

I'm so sorry, Gregory. I pray you find healing from this. I certainly does NOT make you less than a man, and you did not deserve it. God bless.

    G.... B....

Gregory Blosser You did not deserve it. You were an innocent child. And it does not make you less of a man, it makes you a stronger man because you survived it.

    G.... B....

That's so terrible. Lots of times the abusers are really good at gaining people's trust. I hope you find healing.

    G.... B....

Gregory Blosser - don’t ever feel like it was ur fault - sending you big love from Ireland x

    G.... B....

No you didn't deserve it! If you have face book find me on Facebook my name is Sunshine Kitty Robertson Noll add me.

Amy Grant's Best Album: 'Love Lifts'

  28. S.... T....

Ask me was about her "Ask Me", which describes how a woman's faith helps her to heal from child sexual abuse, and "Hope Set High",

    S.... T....

sexual abuse is never easy even for a male there is a God i believe and he will restore you just trust in him thank you amy Grant for all not just this song but all

    S.... T....

It was actually about a friend of hers.

  29. t.... ....

I am the victim of child sex abuse and had just begun my counseling when I bought this album in the early 90's. This song sums it up! It's a hard thing to get through and my abuse was at the hands of a neighbor who sat with us kids. Luckily my Dad wasn't that kind of man!!! But I am grateful for Amy writing this song and it's been my anthem for MANY YEARS and even helped me with my healing process. It's a difficult subject to write about, but I have and will continue!

    t.... ....

It helped me too...she put words to our pain

  30. D.... R....

God's power can overcome every evil - even rape! He is present even when bad things happen to us. He can heal and restore.

    D.... R....

    @Lisa Toner Amen!!!! Blessings!

    D.... R....

Nice to know God sits around and watches evil shit happen to innocent children. And then have the audacity to say, "I would help you but that woman Eve fucked shit up for you millions of years ago because she ate the apple so...sorry, but Free Will!". Please excuse me while I call bullshit.

    D.... R....

While You're being Raped God is with You.. That's Sick

    D.... R....

100% agree....but if you argue with a Christian idiot...they'll say, "It's God's will". They can't accept that God doesn't exist in the way they claim he does.

    D.... R....

Dion Richardson I believe in our Lord Jesus, but I often wonder where He was when I was molested, raped, became a drug user and alcoholic, when each friend passed away from car crashes and overdoses, when I was abused as punishment by my father, when my childhood friend's siblings passed away in a fire ( and her recently from a heroin overdose), when my marriage didn't work out, when I had a miscarriage, when I went to prison and lost EVERYTHING, when my middle school/high school crush Donnie died in a car crash, every time I've had PTSD.... I love the Lord, but I just wonder....

  31. O.... S....

    This song is very touching.

  32. J.... P....

A wonderful song about a very heavy subject! Based on an account of one of Amy's closest friends!
