Some info for those who does not know what the Varyags/Varangian guard was


During the reign of the Eastern Roman emperor Basileus II, the empire was beset on multiple fronts by enemy forces, and after having fought the Rus vikings in the north, they agreed on the terms that the Rus would send some of their warriors to the Byzantine emperor as a truce.


The Byzantine emperor was displeased with the lack of loyalty by his countrymen since they were very vulnerable to betray their liege by usurpers, however these Varangians were hired by money and swore an oath that they would serve their Emperor unto death if necessary and without any political ties to other entities in the Empire. Thus, these northmen would become the famed "Varangian guard" that would act as a personal bodyguard for the Emperor.


Shortly after their establishment they would make a great name of themselves, fighting with a ferocity unknown to the Mediterranean world, as the Emperor would often put them into the most critical times of battles where they gladly hacked their foes into pieces weather they were fighting or running away from the battle with their axes. Such as in the battle of Beroia where 480 Varangians hacked their way into the Pecheneg ranks which caused panic and essentially ended the entire battle in a complete rout of their forces.

Edit: One example of the bloodlust of these men was that during one battle against another Byzantine usurper, the usurping lord had a stroke when he saw the lines of varangians facing his army and died on the spot. Then when his army saw the death of their lord they despaired and scattered. However, the Varangian had come there for a fight and really demanded one. So they started running down and killed most of the fleeing soldiers nevertheless.

It is bit different. Main problem were Bulgars. Vikings (Waldemar, today Vladimir of Kiev) make deal with Emperor Basileus II. Basileus offered his sister, Anna Porphyrogenitos, to Waldemar in exchange for military alliance. As Waldemar was "barbarian ruler", marriage with Roman Princess was great political victory for him and strenghtened his rule. Waldemar, however, had to accept Orthodox Christanity and thus Kiev and Russia became Orthodox Christian realm until present.
Then, Waldemar sent part of his troops (various sources indicate at least 5,000, other claim 10,000), enough to massacre Basileus enemies on all sides - repel Arab raids, suppress rebels and usurpers and annihilate First Bulgarian Empire.

Varangian Guard, what a badass infantry Guard had the Byzantine Empire, having service as Varangian Guard gave you prestige back in the day.

U got all the womens in the village back home :D.

Indeed, and mere days after the Varangian guard left Constantinople (The emperor ran out of cash and couldn’t pay them), the city fell and was sacked in 1204.

Elite Guards of Constantinopel. Went down the russian rivers (Kiew) station. Rurik from from Roslagen (Svealand) formed todays Russia. They fought Magyars ( Hun) to their way to Miklagård.

This is the perfect song for a traitor legion since it starts off with “we are loyal warriors” and ends with “we were loyal warriors”
