American Football - Honestly? Lyrics

Honestly, I can't remember teen dreams
All my teenage feelings and their meanings
They seem too see-through to be true
All the whos are there but the whys are unclear

Picture this, a long-awaited, sickening kiss
How does it feel to know
Explain how you've re-written history
These things change despite the complicated beginning to all of this

Honestly

  8. Len's McCracken

This song makes me think of how much my life is a disaster honestly.

  9. Harry Kidd

Discovered this album in an abusive relationship. She made me feel horrible about myself all the time. It was also my first relationship, so it went on and on with me thinking this was what a typical relationship was like. Finally ended it, and three years later met an amazing woman. This album again serenaded an evening for me, but this time it was beautiful and easy--not painful and difficult to comprehend; an evening with a new person that brought me nothing but peace and joy. This song is really about the passage of time, what changes, and what we learn.

  10. Yeb

Is it just me or does "they seem to see through" sound so much like a Nirvana song in the best way possible

  11. SaltySkramz

"Real Emo" only consists of the dc Emotional Hardcore scene and the late 90's Screamo scene. What is known by "Midwest Emo" is nothing but Alternative Rock with questionable real emo influence. When people try to argue that bands like My Chemical Romance are not real emo, while saying that Sunny Day Real Estate is, I can't help not to cringe because they are just as fake emo as My Chemical Romance (plus the pretentiousness). Real emo sounds ENERGETIC, POWERFUL and somewhat HATEFUL. Fake emo is weak, self pity and a failed attempt to direct energy and emotion into music. Some examples of REAL EMO are Pg 99, Rites of Spring, Cap n Jazz (the only real emo band from the midwest scene) and Loma Prieta. Some examples of FAKE EMO are American Football, My Chemical Romance and Mineral EMO BELONGS TO HARDCORE NOT TO INDIE, POP PUNK, ALT ROCK OR ANY OTHER MAINSTREAM GENRE

  17. profd65

"Math Rock" seems to just be Indie rock lacking in inspiration and catchiness. It's basically just nerds jamming pointlessly.

  18. Kat Jenny

  27. John Harrington

To call American Football's music therapeutic would be a gross understatement. This is deeply healing music. God bless this band.

  28. walltape

you dont wanna grow up, this is a serious comment, im 19 and i remember finding this on /mu/ when i wasnt even 14 yet. i was completely what you would call a loser but i was more in touch with myself then than i could ever muster now.

    ps :time capsule

    Dergi

You can always try and work things out with yourself, its important to take a step back and take care of yourself from time to time.

That final riff blows my mind every time. It's that kind of riff that makes you envious that you weren't the one to write it. Absolutely brilliant stuff.

  33. pthm h

Chord progressions sound like on my head by black marble check it out

  34. Martino Arnese

They've chosen a bad name. If i Google it i find pictures of football players

    BlackPixel

what minnish meant is that you can just type in "american football band" and you'll immediately get results for the band and not the sport

    Martino Arnese

BlackPixelLP i'd be the happiest guy on earth

    I'm trying

    type americ anfootball.

  35. Brady Guess

  36. Nick George

It’s a shame they split up after this album, American football could’ve really been one of the greatest 90s bands

    ガヴァッソマッチア

Nick George it was 99 they could have been a 00s band

  37. Alexis HPDeskjet69

Why does all music of this genre have to sound exactly the same in tune
Song has good lyricism and meaning but the tune is absolute shit

    Dekai Averett

Alexis HPDeskjet69 I actually kind of get that criticism as a fan of Emo. To be fair American Football was one of the first to make the more twinkly atmospheric sound but SO many bands have nabbed that sound sense the late 90s.

  38. 2222

    0:( all my teenage feelings

lol @ how everyone copypasta's this while simultaneously believing it to be true, the copypasta turned in on itself, its not ironic if you believe it, and regardless of how cringe it is, its truth

    Todd Marshall

@SaltySkramz Oh yeah? Well my definition of real emo is so narrow that no bands past or present match the criteria. THERE ARE NO EMO BANDS.

    SaltySkramz

@Todd Marshall now THAT is a true emo elitist, beyond the stars

  42. Nat

wow. where's the video? worst video ever. dislike

  43. ocalaballa

I just want to have a genuine crush on a girl, even if I get rejected. At least I would feel authentic sadness instead of nothing at all

    Rifki Susanto

    Dude thats fucked up

    Insani

    Same here

    Alex?

Imo it's better to feel bad than feel nothing. At least when you feel bad, it also makes you feel human for being able to feel that

    Sean Hoffay

Hell yeah bois, you go with them emo comments. I'm proud of you.

    Day Off

Bro trust me you do not want that. I mean getting rejected is one thing and it sucks but you don’t want to go through a break up with someone you truly loved. Words cannot describe how fucking painful it is. Be happy to not have a broken heart. That shit is lethal.

Even with how much I try to move on, I’m always longing deep down for my first love back...shit sucks

  44. Shilo

    Miss you a lot

  45. katherine lilith

i hate my town so bad for not having any people with this certain taste of music. this song. this band is fucking gold.

NOT TO INDIE, POP PUNK, ALT ROCK OR ANY OTHER MAINSTREAM GENRE

    John Harrington

the definition of rock & roll is not the same as it was in the 50s, the definition of hip-hop is not the same now as it was in the 80s. same thing goes with emo. people colloquially refer to this as emo, and so therefore, it's emo. that's how language works. nobody can claim authority over the definition of a word.

  53. IWillGiveYouAHug

This is mz chrushes favourite song.He blocked me a week ago for no reason at all.
Now when ever I hear thisn song it just remindes me of him and I break down.
It's a good song, but now because of him I fell sad when ever I hear it.

    ylimeye

IWillGiveYouAHug hey man , my ex likes this song . and it makes me think of him too , but shit happens ! you're gonna be okay regardless .

  54. Théophile Phanoune

I don't know any other song which conveys such an intense teenage angst feeling

    Jay Burris Wayne

Théophile Phanoune listen to Dear Diary, My Teen Angst has a Bodycount by From First to Last and From the Depths of Dreams by Senses Fail

    rakkatytam

    @Jay Burris Wayne Gross

    Natalia :0

    Any Midwest emo song

    darealinviz

crash your car by Marquette does a damn good job. tough to find but their Megafone (ep?) is definitely worth a listen if you like this

    Lennon Hunt

The whole tell all your friends album??? Your favorite weapon??

  55. CheeseSandWitch

i like the first minute and fifty seconds but the last 4 minutes suck (or at least goes on for far too long and isn't interesting)

    Jerry Mores

How is the last 4 minutes not interesting? That's actually the most interesting song of this song, the first minute and 50 seconds are pretty limited and boring too. Why do people hate crescendo riffs nowadays? Seems like people have no soul in this world :/

    John Harrington

    oh fuck off

    Sean Gomez

nah man I find the last minute or two the most emotional especially when it transitions into that amazing little riff at the end

    ガヴァッソマッチア

That part brings you right to heaven

    Katya Woronowicz

    CheeseSandWitch you need help

  56. Munti H.

I am just now finding this.... I've been in a cave

  57. Théophile Phanoune

    DADAC#E

The important thing about the riff is to play the third note (D) on the open third string, so that it rings.

    Théophile Phanoune

Well, you can tune the strings lower and then put a capo. But I still prefer doing it without a capo because the sound is clearer. So usually I tune to Db Ab Db Ab C Eb (less dangerous)

    Théophile Phanoune

    @Kevin Mason
Oh, and I forgot an important point. You actually play the main riff with just your DAD strings so if you don't want to play the "eerie ambient" that starts around 2:00, a drop D tuning is sufficient. Even the little melodic motives can be played nicely in standard.

    itaketheSQUARE

Anyway you play it, have fun <3

    Edu Renesto

You could use lighter gauge strings too

    Joan & The Honey Sweat

@Edu Renesto no one ever realizes this

  58. xXVexi_SkyeXx

    Is this hipster music?

    Lloyd

why do i even like this bullshit. why do i even go to indie gigs.

  61. DESMOND SPEARS

Sounds like brand new and bayside mixed

    micrill50

Wouldn't be surprised for brand new to carry that influence, especially with the Devil and God record.

    Mr. Reich

I definitely remember thinking his voice sounded like Anthony Raneri when I first heard this all those years ago. Glad I’m not the only one.

  70. Seltzer Water

I'm overjoyed at this album's popularity even today.  The fact that they, first of all re-issued the album and second: created a music video for "Never Meant" after 15 years of letting the project sit, is amazing/bold.  I respect what these guys are doing and they deserve the publicity.  Let's all just hope that they use the money from the re-issue to create more music as i'm sure their entire fan-base would enjoy!

  71. Michael Papion

This song defined a part of my life in my memory. Definitely.

    Mr. Reich

    Michael Papion Same. Junior year.

  72. Darkicity

    The singer somewhat resembles Bayside

  73. Charlie Prevost

Only found this band very recently, and I'm obsessed.

  75. Christopher Knisley

if i look strong; you look strong does a really interesting cover of this

    Rillywutt

    Where can I hear it?

  76. LetsGetHighOnMorris

When the power chord hits you at 1:52... I can't think of another songs that has transitioned better this way. I really want what this song wants.

    Quinn McGunnigle

Its an open chord mang. open A with a D.
    but agreed with everything else!

    Théophile Phanoune

What ? It's actually a power chord. Or just a fifth chord if you prefer

    zombieteenager007

As far as I know, he just strums the open strings here.

    it’s just youtube tho

sometimes an open strum with d tuning is perfect

    Viktor Hernandez

People usually describe the second half of No. 13 by The Pixies in a similar vein to the one in this song. It has a different vibe but it's also an ambient solo type dealio

  77. k0mbz !

    I miss the north

  78. Blacklava

Make sure you check The One Up Downstairs and Owls, two other brilliant emo/math rock bands which the Kinsella brothers were also a part of. Both similar sounding to American Football.

  79. k0mbz !

    Thank you based god

  80. Abraham Martinez

I dont know how i feel about this but i dont hate it.

  81. GJ Mulhall

Adams song by blink always reminds me of this

  82. music and videogames

Their demo is pretty great too.

  83. darthmon26

    There's a hint of weezer's style

  84. leetr0n

No trouble to tell by the rhythm that they are influenced by Mineral, so great

  85. Sanja Milovic

The middle part reminds me of the outro in Jimmy Eat World's "Goodbye Sky Harbor"

  86. Estany Fernandez

15 seconds into the song, playlisted.

Without a worry about how the rest of the song will turn out.

It seems like the Kinsella brothers had a thing for making one amazing album, and then stopping. It's pretty unfortunate because they made some pretty amazing stuff.

  92. patrick's broken glute

This song sounds like a long farewell to the 90's... beautiful, beautiful song
