Amanda Palmer - Prithee / Liquidation Day Lyrics

You make the sun shine
Keep me warm at night

Sometimes you are my guiding light
When I'm weak or desperate
You'll stretch out your hand
It's a hand that offers courage
It's a hand that calms me down
And leads me to a land that we
Discovered countless years ago
Still young enough to change
This wicked world
So tell me angel, where to now?

Shall we chase rainbows
Ride the stars by night
Stay close
Be my second sight
Show me our tomorrows
'Cause I can't dream alone

Good Queen Regina has a baby
Needs to shop with just one arm
The retinue is panicking
She stays completely calm
Despite the flying mandarins
The rattling tine, the all-encompassing alarm

Because it's Liquidation Day
Ma'am's one with the people

The Lady Grey is floating
And the camera's zooming in
And baby's loudly choking as
Synthetic violins provide a sense of dignity
And keep it neat
And mute the screams

Liquidation Day
Ma'am's one with the people
And everything must go
Royal trucks have blocked the road
The cordon's set in stone
Yet her subjects stand there waving
The flags are at half price
'Cause it pays to advertise
And everybody's nice
They're craving (craving)

Good Queen Regina blows a kiss
To show she's just like one of us
Never fully understood the need for all the fuss
Prefers to be the first... not part of that ignoble rush
That ignoble rush

Liquidation Day
It's liberating... hey!
To be one all the...

    🎼🎤🎻 *Lyrics* 🎼🎤🎻
    [Verse 1]
When I got to the party they gave me a forty
And I must have been thirsty, cause I drank it so quickly
When I got to the bedroom, there was somebody waiting
And it isn't my fault that the barbarian raped me

    [Verse 2]
When I went to get tested I brought along my best friend
Melissa Mahoney (who had once been molested)
And she knew how to get there; she knew all the nurses
They were all very friendly, but the test came out positive

    [Chorus]
I've seen better days but I don't care
Oh I just sent a letter in the mail

    [Verse 3]
When I got my abortion I brought along my boyfriend
We got there an hour before the appointment
And outside the building were all these annoying
Fundamentalist Christians; we tried to ignore them

    [Chorus]
I've had better days but I don't care
Oasis got my letter in the mail

    [Verse 4]
When vacation was over, the word was all over
That I was a crackwhore; Melissa had told them
And so now we're not talking except we have tickets
To see Blur in October and I think we’re still going

    [Chorus]
I've seen better days but I don't care
Oh, I just got a letter in the mail

Rewatching this after the video for Voicemail for Jill. Ten years ago I loved Amanda for her angry, provocative, unflinching perspective, but I’m so glad she’s grown softer with time, warm and strong enough to protect others.

This is disgusting. You'd have to be a psychopathic to look at a 10 week, 20 week, 30 week baby in the womb and say that baby deserves no rights. Has anyone even look into what happens to them during abortion procedures or at fetal development?

    C.... B....

You have to be an idiot to claim a 10 week embryo has anything in common with a 20 or 30 week fetus. 20 and 30 weeks abortions happen for serious reasons.

No, barely formed embryos don't have rights. Don't like surgery? Well colonoscopies are gross but we don't ban them.

    C.... B....

Why don’t you shut the fuck up? Not your damn kid so what the fuck do you have to do with it? It’s a woman’s right to do as they please with the meat sack inside them

Ok so I know this song may be OOOOOOOOOOOLD but am I the only one who thinks of Melissa May when she talks about molestation and her friend Melissa, I mean we never hear of Melissa after the tragic events so maybe she left child prostitution and became a somewhat normal person as seen in this music video, just a thought.

Uh-huh. She was trying to be edgy and shocking. Didn't work. She came off as a cold heartless provocateur.

  47. N.... Z....

  55. R.... R....

Is Link from Rhettandlink the guy who plays the boy friend that she brought along to the abortion?

    R.... R....

    Definitely not.

  56. Z.... Q....

Why are the band dressed like the Monkees?

  57. L.... ....

While I think that some of the criticism towards the song is a bit misguided it's idiotic how some people react to said criticism. It's a sensitive matter and if all some people have to say is "Wait, how can you be offended by this?" instead of reflecting on the subject matter itself, the song missed its mark. Anyway, people have to realize that humans cope with things differently some might prefer humor, others might not and if the latter group doesn't like/is offended by the song since the portrayal, not necessarily the implication, is in stark contrast to the subject matter, that's understandable, it's an opinion. Whether the song trivializes rape or not is a different question since the trivialization doesn't necessarily depend on the intended implication.

The thing that is offensive to me about this whole debacle is the fact that she compared her song to "life is beautiful". Not in the sense that she compares the two in terms of niveau, she's probably not that arrogant, but in terms of sameness. In "life is beautiful" humor happens on one level while on the other level the tragedy happens. In her song the tragedy part is at best implied which leaves the humorous part in the spot light and open to misinterpretation. People don't call "life is beautiful" out for trivializing the Holocaust because it clearly portrays the horrors of it (Spoiler! For example the protagonist being executed at the end). The comedy has a fixed context while in her video/song the only other context is the one society puts forth in everyday life and within that context, a context where rape isn't often treated as the serious issue it is, one could say that it does in fact contribute to the trivialization of rape, especially in the minds of the people that didn't experience it or fear it. The point here isn't that the actual message behind the song trivializes rape, of course not! I don't like her humor or her music that much but I think that she's a decent human being. The point is that her chosen method of portrayal is disproportionately present and sometimes we can't just keep tackling these kinds of issues with layers of humor stacked on top of them. The video/song isn't worrying on its own, it's worrying when it comes to the communication of the issue within a societal context. Rape survivors know how horrible rape can be, for them the issue isn't trivialized in this specific sense by the video/song but the rest of us didn't have the same experiences. We perceive the issue mostly through a societal lens and if that lens consists of 90% Irony/humor society as a whole doesn't perceive the issue with the seriousness it deserves.

In short, the problem isn't her intended meaning but the fact that she further contributes to the disproportionately present media-pieces that tackle the issue light heartily.

  58. L.... J....

this is one of my favourite songs <3

  59. B.... b....

I love this song and video so much. I think it perfectly encapsulates the denial and coping mechanisms that often follow something as traumatic as rape. I've seen it so many times too as a tragically high amount of my closest people have experienced it in some form or another. I just have one problem with this video and that's when it is actually happening there is no passive suggestion that she was forced into it (other than her actually stating it). It's obviously just an accidental but if her hands were tied I honestly believe there would have been a lot less backlash over this video.

    B.... b....

Not only would that have distracted from the tone of the video it takes away from the 'grey' areas of rape. If consent is not there or is withdrawn it is rape. Sometimes it's harder to deal with then there was no 'passive suggestion that she was forced into it ' and it's easier to blame the person who didn't choose, when it's not their fault. Passed out drunk and dressed like a slut were we? This is not asking for it! I'm not saying that you don't know that already! Just disagreeing that it should have been clearer in the video.

    B.... b....

+Senorita Pinata you make a good point tbf. still my point was that most people who are against this song/video are against it because they think she's making a mockery of rape. it's obvious to us she's not but not everyone. some people need it spelled out

    B.... b....

Some people are always going to need stuff spelt out to them. Some people think a restraining order is playing hard to get! There's always someone who's going to be against whatever you do!

  60. S.... M....

Earwormed with this song and trying really hard not to sing it out loud at work.

  61. T.... M....

Damn. Tumblr would flip out if this song came out in 2016

    T.... M....

Holy shit, this is a song about a teen being raped and getting an abortion. It also describe the coping of this whole event by listening to music (most specifically britpop of the 90s). I don't seen where you see humor or trivializing in any of this.

Also, for someone complaining about people being triggered and all....you sure seem pretty offended about a website and something you obviously don't understand. Lastly, the hate that Tumblr receives is so overrated, the only reasons why fuckboys react so badly to it is because it's one of the few websites with a majority of women users and where they openly talk about politics and sex and other topics usually reserved for edgy boys like you. But hey, I guess these insecurities ain't going to protect themselves.

    T.... M....

it's comments like this that confirm someone has a very limited experience with the site

    T.... M....

Well sorry about that, but I won't cry a river over ONE website where boys don't feel at ease.

    T.... M....

@MMD oh no, i was replying to the OP of this thread. Google is great like that where sometimes it tags who you're replying to, sometimes not. :/

I actually very much agree with you, people just hate on tumblr because it's easy/popular to do so.

    T.... M....

I found this video through it's Tumblr advocates.

Is it Blur or Blue they're going to see in October? It sounds like she says Blue, but it makes more sense for it to be Blur as she's already an Oasis fan so she has good taste in music.

    P.... f....

She's actually a fan of Oasis? I thought she was making some type of joke about the actual definition of oasis, not the band its named for.

    P.... f....

    It's Blur

    P.... f....

+WiggumsWopez what if it was blue October instead of Blur in October

  66. W.... C....

I never interpreted it as actual sexual assault but an exaggeration in the mind of a teenager, a white lie that in her mind justified the fact that she had gotten tipsy and made it with a stranger at a party. I always saw it as humourous commentary on the teenage mind, not actual sexual assault, like how getting a letter from Oasis was the most important thing to her, despite the fact that she went through an abortion and her best friend turning on her.

    I couldn’t sleep so

    at 4 in the morning,
    Melissa was glaring
    and I just wondered
    had I seen her before
    but in some other context,
    I goggled her name
    To find her whole history
    to my surprise that’s
    all there was out there,
    she raises her lip
    like she’s so disgusted
    she won’t eat her breakfast
but we all still love her.

  76. A.... G....

how did this garner criticism from people saying it was making light of the situation?

its like saying 'Shiny Happy People' by R.E.M glorifies anti-depressants

    A.... G....

+alice grey That is a bloody good point. People should realize that "safe" commercial music is right in front of them to enjoy. If they feel offended by this song, they must go looking for it. I am a massive Amanda Palmer/Dresden Dolls fan and i feel lucky to be aware of them. I swear if i went to sleep at a reasonable hour i wouldn't of heard of them. Thanks to The Amp for playing their vids at 4 in the morning is all i can say lol

    A.... G....

Just saw her on her “There Will Be No Intermission” tour, and she said that “people saying I was making light of the situation were right: because that’s my job. As an artist, I go into the darkest places and I bring light.”

  77. M.... ....

The only reason why people take a political stance on artists is because they make it so. 100 people can look at the same painting and get different messages from it. It will not always be the same as what the artist sees in it. That's what makes art an amazing medium. We need to provoke thought in a world that doesn't want you to think about anything.

  78. M.... ....

Didn't find it funny however it is an art form and it is supposed to stir emotion and provoke conversation. This is what art is all about. Art unleashed is not supposed to be anything but this. It's not political any more than playing a killer in a movie, it's a craft and it is to mirror all aspects of life. The good, bad and the ugly. Stop trying to restrain artists. We need to look at the reflection of our society even if it hurts, it's real.

  79. J.... J....

    Evilly funny.

Palmer has said that the song isn't meant to be making fun of rape victims; it's written this way because she believes that having a sense of humor is one of the most powerful ways to cope with a traumatic situation, so it's written to be ironic. Yes, I completely understand why people don't like this song, but I just feel like people should have this knowledge.

    s.... ....

I always read this as an incredibly dark song. Contrasting the image of high school as “the best days of your life” and the expectation to behave as such with the reality that it is a supremely vulnerable, confusing, and traumatic time for a lot of people in a lot of ways. The upbeat cheerfulness is the persona presented to the public. The treatment of the various events and their apparent relative importance shows how we’re “supposed to” behave (be briefly upset at a friends betrayal, pretend like rape basically doesn’t affect her in any significant way, and obsess endlessly over a band). But the treatment of the band is be the only genuine emotion allowed and as such she holds it up and allows it to fully define her at that moment.

    s.... ....

From the like to dislike ratio I'd say people like it more than they dislike it bruh

    s.... ....

I was raped and I identify with this song 100%

    s.... ....

I always thought it was a response to Oasis's "Live Forever" which was kind of a response to Nirvana's "I Hate Myself and I Want To Die." Noel Gallagher had said in an interview: "At the time . . . it was written in the middle of grunge and all that, and I remember Nirvana had a tune called 'I Hate Myself and Want to Die', and I was like . . . 'Well, I'm not fucking having that.' As much as I fucking like him [Cobain] and all that shit, I'm not having that. I can't have people like that coming over here, on smack, fucking saying that they hate themselves and they wanna die. That's fucking rubbish. Kids don't need to be hearing that nonsense.
Seems to me that here was a guy who had everything, and was miserable about it. And we had fuck-all, and I still thought that getting up in the morning was the greatest fuckin' thing ever, 'cause you didn't know where you'd end up at night. And we didn't have a pot to piss in, but it was fucking great, man."
I kinda figured Amanda was basically responding with a tongue-in-cheek rebuttal, showing that real people deal with real troubles and that music can be a release for that anguish. It ties into the broader themes of the album which I felt pertained to issues of mental illness and abuse (whether external, internal, or substantive). Obviously, this is only my interpretation and I could totally be wrong about her intent behind the lyrical themes of this album, but this song really seemed like it was pertaining to the aforementioned issue.

    s.... ....

She is a rape victim herself

  81. L.... G....

This seems like a joke at first, but it's really sad. It seems to be about a girl around my age going through this awful thing and using the band letter interaction as a distraction so she doesn't have to deal with it. :(

    L.... G....

You guys?dont get it.she?said oasis jeez

    L.... G....

Michelle Norman there was no need for your reply. you have said nothing in it. no do.

    L.... G....

whatever you cant bring me down .

  82. S.... S....

This is SO amazing!! Funny and serious at the same time. YAY!

  83. S.... ....

When I got to the party, I got drunk too quickly, then I fucked a stranger, changed my mind later, told everyone that he raped me.

  84. M.... E....

A classic song and video. Love the colors~~

  85. N.... S....

To whoever: DO NOT READ THE COMMENTS. You've been warned.

    N.... S....

Nikita Skorobogatov too late, you weren’t high enough to be seen first

  86. C.... E....

People - this is theater. Humor satire and its F'ing brilliant.

  87. P.... A....

I think my favorite part is the nurse feeding the baby the 40 in the background at the end. But all around this is one of the happiest and funniest videos I have ever seen.

  88. v.... ....

There are usually different types of music I listen to when I'm in different kinds of moods except for AFP. Her music is perfectly suited for all of my moods. <3 That is another great and unique thing about Amanda Fucking Palmer!

    v.... ....

@voka13 I agree. So many artists are so one dimensional but she makes me feel a full range of emotions. From St. Kilda To Fitzroy is like the happiest tune, and The Bed Song is like the saddest, and everything in between.

  89. K.... ....

    I FUCKING LOVE YOU

  90. M.... E....

OK maybe this is weird but I think I enjoy the blonde woman in glasses with the "Jesus HATES you" sign more than any of the other actors in the video. Go, fake Fundamentalist Christian abortion protestor!

    M.... E....

@Michelle Everett Jesus hates you! haha

  91. K.... W....

Is this suppose to be funny? I mean I'm all for women's rights and all but this isn't funny really isn't

    K.... W....

It's meant to be about her denial. It's not a joke, it's not satire, it's just a play by play of the song, and, honestly, it's kinda meant to be sad

  92. J.... S....

    Beautiful...just so beautiful..

  93. P.... H....

Gosh, all the philosophizing below has given me a headache.  I just think that she's really pretty and that this song is a hoot.  A HOO-OO-OOT!

And maybe yall should lay off her a little bit; if she wanted to be famous she wouldn't mention abortion in an upbeat little pop song, but if she didn't act with the intent of addressing an audience she couldn't qualify as an artist.  Will the tension get thorny? Sure.  Might she suffer from a lil hypocrisy?  Might.  Doesn't hypocrisy just indicate that our ambition for moral excellence exceeds our present capacity for moral action?  Yep.  Relaxies.

  94. M.... W....

I was surprised reading the comments that people thought this was meant to be joke..? To me it just seems to scream sarcasm. Her sickly sweet make up and the whole sparkly girlishness of the video reminds you that she's really young, and she's gone through this terrible thing that people don't even see as a big deal, they just carry on as normal. People act like abortions are an easy last minute fix to problems like rape, when in reality it's a very difficult and upsetting process.

    M.... W....

    +Maisie Willow
if you've ever had an abortion, you might appreciate the (finally!!) HUMOR in all the dark spaces. when everything is so horrible, you have to get at least one laugh. It doesn't negate the situation. It is a better way to cope with things than to - go to doctor
    - get pills
    - get extreme therapy
    - constantly relive memories in a sullen, depressing order.

    M.... W....

+KiKiLovesYouBoo yeah I get that too I suppose, just seemed like an angry song when I first watched it

  95. M.... B....

No matter how many times I watch it, it always make me laugh how the rapist sits in the back and munchin the whole time. LOL not rude at all.

    M.... B....

I might be reading to much into it, but I think that might be a metaphor for how she's doing all these things to distract herself and let go of it, and you do move on after being raped, but you still have days where you shower too long because you don't feel clean, or you feel like it was your fault or something like that.

  96. R.... ....

I fucking love this video and song. <3

  97. D.... ....

Was that ben fucking kingsley at 0:37?
