Amanda Palmer - Everybody Knows Somebody Lyrics

They say
This land gets more and more divided
If I may
I think that's not the only side why
Just today
I read the late edition paper
And no way
I saw the North and South united
Like the blood
That flows every color body
It's enough
We've finally all at the same party
Looking down
It may not be the thing we wanted
But there's finally enough to go around

From New York to California
From Detroit down to the border
We all have more in common now than we do not

'Cause everybody knows somebody
(Everybody knows somebody)
Everybody knows somebody
(Everybody knows somebody)
Everybody knows somebody who got shot

They say
There's trouble brewing in the union
Hip hooray
Look human beings being human
Laying blame
Wherever there is room to lay it's
All the same
You want the red pill or the blue one
But it's all
About to change, something is getting us
Aboard
The SS progress, one big funeral
For all
The people that we used to call
Before they risked their lives
To head out to the mosque or to the mall

From New York to California
From Detroit down to the border
We all have more in common now than we do not

'Cause everybody knows somebody
(Everybody knows somebody)
Everybody knows somebody
(Everybody knows somebody)
Everybody knows somebody who got shot

From the mountain rivers to the public squares
Everybody's getting really good at sending thoughts and prayers
From the Heart of Dixie up to Oregon
We can can all rest assured there'll be a slaughter somewhere by the dawn
And in the nightclubs all the dancers in the dark
They can twist the night away with extra fear inside their hearts
From New England to Alaska every child
Will know exactly what to do now when a shooter opens fire

From New York to California
From Detroit down to the border
We all have more in common now than we do not

'Cause everybody knows somebody
(Everybody knows somebody)
Everybody knows somebody
(Everybody knows somebody)
Everybody knows somebody
(Everybody knows somebody)

This land is your land
This land is my land
This land is our land
Until it's not

'Cause everybody knows somebody
(Everybody knows somebody)
Everybody knows somebody
(Everybody knows somebody)
Everybody knows somebody
Until everybody's gone

    nice voice

  2. K.... L....

And, really, it affects *everyone*, even people who are not directly connected to a shooting. We all have to ask ourselves: "Will my children be next?" "Will my friends, family, or co-workers be next?" . . . "Will *I* be next??". This affects us, just as did growing up with The Bomb during the Cold War.

    LOVE you...BRILLIANT

  4. H.... S....

Thank you for this, Amanda. Our desire to live peacefully is what we have in common and we want that for other people too. I feel so inspired and determined. All the love from the Philippines to you and the rest of the world! <3

  5. A.... ....

This is the song equivalent of the great, gut-punching, perpetually (frighteningly) reoccurring headline from The Onion: "No Way to Prevent This," Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens." Fantastic piece.

  6. M.... N....

Everytime I listen to this song I cry...

  7. D.... ....

I love it, I love it, I love it! I just had to sing along.

Amanda Palmer is beyond real and beautiful. I saw her in St. Louis at the Pageant and was blown away. She is AMAZING!! I know so many people that have been victim's of gun violence, never mass shootings just on the street. This shit does not need to happen and it's insane?

  12. C.... C....

Goddamn there’s a lot of dust in my eyes.

  13. S.... Z....

You find so much joy in life. I don't.

  14. C.... K....

All the way from Australia, you can do it America! Fight to change the laws, the culture, the conversation around guns and maybe this song won't be relevant to you in a couple of decades either.
We've had a couple of violent incidents recently that were possibly domestic terrorism. I can count the death toll on one hand. It wasn't a good guy with a gun who stopped those people, but citizens trying to help the police with a shopping trolley, then a chair and a milk crate.
We might still be losing far too many people to domestic violence and suicide, but we have said that our right to live without fear is far more important than someone's right to firearms.

A wonderful way to get us all to share a moment in our day. SINGING OUT 🎶 I love this. I happened to pause my breakfast so I could sing. A great way to start today. Be blessed, Amanda!!!!

  17. b.... s....

I have a feeling the people who need to see this the most are not among Amanda's fanbase or Patreon. How do we get this viral like, in terms of hundreds of millions of views, where everyone and their grandmother is clicking on it whether they know Amanda or not, and maybe some gun supporters will watch it by accident and rethink their actions?

  18. V.... d....

Laughing and crying at the same time.
    Such gravitas.

Unfortunately, the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is with a kind word and sympathy... or a good guy with a gun. People have been killing each other since the beginning of time. Kane killed Able and he didn't use an AR15. Jesus told his deciples in Luke22-36 to sell their cloak and buy a sword if they didn't already have one. The only use for a sword is to kill. You wouldn't use one to clean a fish. The problem with society today is that we don't call evil out as evil. And we expect someone else to protect us. I'm not willing to wait the 3-30 minutes or more it might take for the police to arive. I will use my God given constitutional right to protect myself and others. If more people were armed the bad guys would have to think twice before committing the atrocities they do. There is no way to stop someone from trying to kill another. If they can't buy a gun, they'll steal one or use a car.or knife. Perhaps they'll use a rock like Kane probably did. So after you round up all the guns, you better start on the Rocks.

  37. M.... R....

Thank you so much Amanda for bringing light to this darkness so many people don't want to look at. The time for paradigm shift is now. I'll be learning and busking this loud and proud. <3

  38. K.... ....

Does anybody know where Amanda Palmer stands on Michael Jackson??? I love her but if she feeds the lies spreading about an innocent, acquitted, dead black man then I can't with a conscious mind support her. This is very important to me, been disappointed in so many lately, I cannot and will not ever separate any art from the artist.

  39. F.... E....

My daughter is about to go away to university, here in the UK. I feel for the parents and the kids in the US. There really should not be any concerns about our children going about their day, in an educational setting. Why? I simply can't imagine what American families go through, with this issue. Vote out the guns. They do not make you safer. We have lived without armed police, and corner shops selling weapons in the UK. Love to you all.

  40. D.... S....

this pretty much sums up my sentiments on the horrible spike in violence over the last few years. It's recently seemed to have gotten pretty bad. preach, afp.

  41. t.... u....

luvvvvvv your style songbird!! new sub.. found ya in my suggested vids so glad i needed to hear your voice.. tyTYty.. luv tlc

  42. W.... U....

My girlfriend committed suicide three years ago last month, and my best friend in January, I know gun control can’t do much for suicide. But the pain is the same. I’m sorry for those affected by gun violence in some way or another. But now is as good of a time as any to have this discussion. For the love of god we need to keep each other safe.

  43. R.... D....

Huuuuhhhh. I thought this was gonna be a fun song. And now I'm crying in my kitchen. Its tough. Its so, so, hard. But we will get through this.

  44. S.... M....

Thank you for this. I recently went to the USA and was baffled to see notices around the campuses of two colleges I visited giving instructions on what to do in the case of an 'active shooter'. When there are warning signs permanently displayed about an issue ... WTAF? Let's hope there's some sensible legislation on this issue soon.

  45. T.... ....

I couldn't stop thinking about my little cousin, Cate, who was shot in 2011 in a hit-and-run. She was 19. I babysat her when she was just a toddler. And she was a beautiful human being, full of promise and love. I would love to have shared a drink with her.

  46. B.... ....

This song is so painful and the wonderful spikes of humour in it make it even more so.
Definitely up there with the old folk/protest songs. <3

  47. D.... S....

Did not appreciate you singing 'this land is my land, our land'
Your ancestors were colonizers and/or you benefitted from colonization

  48. S.... H....

Heartbreaking. Make great art. :( thank you Amanda.

  49. R.... M....

Why is it that it takes mass shootings for people to suddenly start caring about firearm violence? People have been getting shot for quite sometime now, every single day. Someone just got shot here yesterday, but because it won't make national news, it won't be used as a specific example of a gun violence problem in the Untied States. It will just be another statistic. Do a daily Google News search for the word, "shot". You will never find a gap in shootings longer than a day, perhaps even a few hours, if not minutes. The number of people affected by this problem in any given amount of time shouldn't matter unless that number is ZERO. Every single victim is a tragedy.

  50. P.... L....

Yes and don't forget VOTE for Trump! He makes america safe again!!

How can something so devastating, be sung such charm and heart? ❤️💔

  54. M.... A....

  55. M.... E....

Listening to this song from a European country with zero mass shootings is so surreal, yet we feel your pain ♥

I love the videos and audio recordings that make me feel like we're sat next to each other, perhaps sharing a bottle of wine. I sang. Quietly at first, and then louder with each repetition x

Singing along in Orlando, right down the street from Pulse.

  60. B.... F....

Called to mind another classic appeal to sanity...

The sun is setting on the century
and we are armed to the teeth
    We're all working together now
To make our lives mercifully brief

And school kids keep trying to teach us
    What guns are all about
    Confuse liberty with weaponry
And watch your kids act it out

    Every year now like Christmas
Some boy gets the milk-fed suburban blues
reaches out for the available arsenal
and saunters off to make the news.

Look at where the profits are
It's there you'll find the source
Of the big lie that you and I
    Both know so well

In the time it takes this cultural death wish
    To run its course
Their gonna make a pretty penny
Then they're all going to hell.

singing along from Brazil. Our president looks up to Trump a lot and always says he intends to give fire weapons to people and he thinks he will end gun violence, but watching policemen shoot students everyday; and abusive men having a huge gun in the same house as their abused wife... I don't think so.

  63. M.... M....

I really needed this after today, thank you for being so beautifully inclusive and considerate, and just generally a beautiful human being. <3

  64. G.... B....

    You're such a great woman❤️❤️

  66. T.... M....

This is a very poignant and potentially potent protest song. The upbeat melody and jolly delivery contrasts nicely with the understated, sarcastic wit; it's both musically catchy as well as lyrically tight & consistent and it speaks to a burning issue in US society, affecting everyone at some level.

I could envision a video clip with footage of Palmer performing this song with a band and live audience, interpersed with pictures of the victims of the last 20 years of US gun massacres. If the production value is there, such a thing might easily attract millions of views.

It's quite bizarre that ordinary people now have to reckon with their children being massacred when they bring them to school. (Of course, black US Americans had to reckon with lynchings & domestic terrorism up until the civil rights struggle in the '60s, but let's not get into that right now).

  67. K.... ....

Sang this along with my son and then needed to explain why it’s so unfortunately necessary

  68. E.... B....

Singing along Amanda. You and your music mean more than you know.

  69. S.... B....

Not an American, but I'm appalled by the mass shootings and this song brought me to tears. It was heartbreaking to see Mrs. Palmer trying to finish singing without crying... It's a wonderful song. Thank you for the emotion.

  70. L.... A....

This is amazing. I love you! Would you be willing to share the chords for this song. I’d love to share it at open mic. 💚💚

  71. A.... M....

    So Nice!

  72. L.... T....

    Amanda, I love you

  73. m.... ....

i don't know somebody who got shot but here in Minas Gerais, Brasil, we're still suffering the death of almost 1% of the citizens of Brumadinho in a dam disruption caused by neglect of VALE, a large mining company. have you heard of the disaster Amanda? it amazes me how important these kind of music or poems are necessary so we can cry about death and then move on

  74. D.... F....

I have heard some bemoan that these trying times are bereft of the activism songs that seemed to help galvanize and unify efforts of past movements for change. I try my best to share Amanda, as far and wide as I can, to prove that those muses for change are here and creating. I love you Amanda! Thank you for this, and for everything that you do amplify these incredibly important messages, in these troubling times!

  75. m.... ....

  80. S.... R....

Fuck. I love you so much, more with every piece of art you create. xo

  81. T.... B....

I sang along - so did my dog; and one of my cats interjects an amazed 'meow' every so often :)

  82. D.... ....

Beautiful song, beautiful artistic activism and on top I got a view on Neil Gaiman's private space which I never thought I would.

  83. L.... K....

I love you too, Amanda. <3

This song definitely hit me in the feels. I don't know if it would have affected me in the same way had I not sung along. Very well done!

  84. J.... I....

CAN I please have the chords for this song?? I NEED to play it for my conservative parents who carry guns like cash.

  85. J.... I....

This is beautiful. I sang along and loved it. Amanda I’ve loved your work since I was 11 and I’m 14 now, but I think that it’s all amazing. You’re so underrated and truly I can say that you’re my favourite artist in this messed up time we live in. Mr.Neil Gaiman is a pretty lucky guy :)

  86. w.... ....

    cool c:

  87. M.... W....

What if we recorded a cover of this poem and charged, say, $10,000 a download, all to the benefit of this cause? And then shame the rich into buying a copy. Thinking, just a straight dramatic reading, no music? Just spitballing here.

  88. C.... C....

Singing along from my kitchen in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Also crying from my kitchen in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

  89. S.... ....

I adore you woman. And this song. And I sang along. But you said Oregon wrong. ❤️😝

  90. R.... C....

Singing and crying along from Canada. I love you Amanda.

  91. M.... P....

You, my dear, are Awesome. ♥

  92. H.... M....

I remember when Amanda Palmer wasn’t so political...just kidding. If you think coin operated boy wasn’t political then you think her caring about gender relations 20 years ago was just a affectation. Some people affect concern for the world they live in, but usually can’t keep it up.

Keep it up, Amanda. Charity is usually for the charitable, but art that is art has always been political.

  93. T.... T....

    beautiful being

  94. A.... ....

I live in Australia, so I don't. I know plenty of people with guns though. America, you need to have a good, hard look at yourselves!

    A.... ....

NRA-funded AmerIKKKa is now exporting it's sickness. I live in Dunedin, New Zealand. From 2017 to 2019 the tRump-admiring white supremacist responsible for the atrocities in Christchurch lived a couple of miles from my home. He joined a local gun club, and his original target was to be our small local mosque. Yes, guns should only be for those who need them, not insecure fuck-ups who want a penis extension, however the incessant hate-mongering - including 'professional' bigots is also part of the problem.

  95. F.... ....

Amanda fucking palmer I love this! How beautiful and sad, but wonderful. I am so lonely right now but thank you for the company in the form of a sing-a-long. Please do this again. Xx

  96. W.... v....

I am European and sang along. I was quite shocked when Amanda finished my first chorus, when I realised this song is for Americans.
What a messed up world you Americans live in, because I (as an European) do not know someone that has been shot.
I really hope your new president will start a gun buyback plan just like in New Zealand as soon as possible. **fingers-crossed**

  97. R.... R....

I love you Amanda Fucking Palmer.
