Walpurgisnat was actually a coven of magical girls who became a witch together, believing that if they turn the whole world into a stage and made everyone perform in their circus no one would truly suffer because their experiences wouldnall be an act directed in an eternal Witch's-Night. In becoming the stage setting witch, they learned to absorb magical girls who succumb to dispair while fighting her, adding crewhands to help set the stage as familiars. Walpurgisnat is also the top half of an hourglass, where the witch that Madoka becomes is the bottom half. This visual symetry is because Homura had to watch time flows ever further away from Walpurgisnat and ever closer to Gretchin. The first would have everyone dance and play and be a part of a never ending performance, and the second wants to smother the earth and end all suffering.

Oh the woes of trying to help everyone.
