Allman, Gregg - Will The Circle Be Unbroken Lyrics

I was standing by my window,
On a cold and cloudy day
When I saw that hearse come rolling
Oh to carry my mother away

So I told the undertaker
Undertaker please drive slow
For that lady that you are haulin'
Oh I hate to see here go

Tell me will the circle be unbroken
By and by, lord, by and by
There's a better home there waiting
In the sky, lord, in the sky

Will the circle be unbroken
(Will the circle be unbroken)
By and by, lord, by and by
(By and by, lord, by and by)
There's a better home a-waiting
(There's a better home a-waiting)
In the sky, lord, in the sky
(In the sky, lord, in the sky)

So I followed close behind her
Tried to hold up and be brave
But I could not hold my sorrow
When they laid her in the grave

Will the circle be unbroken
(Will the circle be unbroken)
(By and by, lord, by and by)
(There's a better home a-waiting)
(In the sky, lord, in the sky)

So I followed close behind her
Tried to hold up and be brave yeah
But I could not hold my sorrow
When they laid her in the grave

Say will that circle be unbroken
By and by, lord, by and by
There's a better home a-waiting
In the sky, lord, in the sky

Oh will the circle be unbroken
(Will the circle be unbroken)
By and by, lord, by and by
(By and by, lord, by and by)
There's a better home a-waiting
(There's a better home a-waiting)
In the sky, lord, in the sky
(In the sky, lord, in the sky)

Will the circle be unbroken
By and by, lord, by and by
There's a better home a-waiting
In the sky, lord, in the sky

Will the circle be unbroken
By and by, lord, by and by
There's a better home there waiting
In the sky, lord, in the sky

Say now will the circle be unbroken
By and by, lord, by and by
There's a better home a-waiting
In the sky, lord, in the sky

  84. marc campbell

I know I'm way behind the power curve here, but this was first recorded as the 8th track of Greg Allman's first solo album released in 1973 "Laid Back"..2 years after the death of his brother Duane. His mother, Geraldine, passed away in 2000 at the age of 98, 27 years later. 'Will the Circle Be Unbroken" was attributed to Doc Watson, the Carter family, and many other Blue Grass musicians. but the song was actually a biblical hymn written in 1907, with the original verses changed dramatically, to suit "Can the Circle Be Unbroken" as sung by, and made popular by the Carter Family. However, anyway you look at it, or more importantly hear it, it is one beautiful hymn.. and just as popular in the Blue Grass world as "Amazing Grace" which was written 128 years earlier...1779.

    ann cooley

Thank you for the info on the history of the song. I feel that Gregg should have gotten around to an entire Americana album based on this rendition. He brought his own style and stamp to this song which he always did when going solo. I view this song as foreshadowing of another side and wished we could have heard him sing more classics. I do think this might be the version on his live album, 1974.

    Mickey McCarthy

Momma A didn't die in 2000. She actually died in July of 2015

  85. Guess Who

Son this is from The Gregg Allman Band on Tour 1974 (20 plus orchestra extravaganza)!
    Available on LP or CD.

    dean rowan

Saw the Gregg Allman Tour at the Fox about then, Governor and Mrs Carter were in the front row. Gregg came out to start and tripped over his monitor and sprawled out flat on his face. When he got to the bench of his grand piano he sat down, played and sang fine like only he can.

    guitarslinger319

    On the Laid Back Album
