Allman, Gregg - Multi-Colored Lady Lyrics

Got on a bus in Memphis
Destination Rome
Georgia ain't no paradise
But a place I just call home
I sat next to a broken hearted bride
She was cryin', tryin' so hard to hide
Her selfish sorrow

I tried to get her talkin'
She didn't have much to say
She asked me for a map to death row
But I didn't know the way
She had lost a million in the game
One look out the window at the pine trees and the rain
It wasn't her day

Multicolored lady
You ain't like no rainbow I've ever seen
Multicolored lady
Angry red, passion blue, but mostly shades of green

Midnight came and brought more rain
Nothing seemed to ease her pain
The hours that we talked seemed like minutes all in vein
I watched as her tears kept runnin' wide
Bye and bye and bye, way back after a while
She started smilin'

Multicolored lady
You ain't like no rainbow I've ever known
Multicolored lady
Come go with me, I'll take you to my home

Oh, by the way, I'm bound for Rome

"It was also true that almost every word of Gregg Allman’s “Multi-Colored Lady” played at top volume on a dual-speaker Sony TC-126 in an open-door room on the 20th floor could be heard in the NFL. press room on the hotel mezzanine … but it was hard to be sure of the timbre and carrying-power of my own voice in this cavern; it sounded, to me, like the deep screaming of a bull elk in the rut … but there was no way to know, for sure, if I was really getting through."

I like coming to Travis Clay's upload of this song because he wrote the words for us and these words tell the sweetest story...just the words "her own selfish sorrow," everytime we cry over a love lost or even the death of my father (which really sucked), I shed tears that were not only messengers of unspeakable grief, but they were a luxury, I was into my own selfish sorrow. "midnight came and brought more rain, here he says "nothing seemed to EASE HER Pain." In others, he has changed the words, like he does, and says "Midnight came and brought more rain (tears?) nothing seemed to CHANGE....and then wasted words when the minutes become hours talking in vane, (lousy pun intended 'wasted words'). She's like a rainbow and he understands because we all are rainbows, each color a different emotion. I was disappointed, though, to find out there is a Rome, GA. I prefer to think that he is escaping and he gets that across by saying a bus could take him to rome, Italy. Which he probably did mean...because he implies he is going home..."GA ain't no paradise, a place I can call home...: We all know he is a Macon boy. NOW, I like to evaluate words, but the point is not a lesson, I believe that this interesting album cover, along with the album ABBs put out, EAT A PEACH are way out of the norm and speak to us through the art. Both, the Gregg band and the ABBs usually used photos as album covers. I like to listen to the song and look at the cover. I believe that the face of Duane is Gregg and the artist made a half/half Allman brother. Both in one. It was so soon after Duane's death and the raindrops in this picture...the snow inside and stormy weather outside as well (lousy pun not intended), Gregg had brown eyes for awhile...I don't know which were contacts, but he DID have brown eyes at times...I have written the artist...let's see if the picture is of both brothers....duane inside of gregg...or I he is just sad...or I am crazy...probably the latter.

  14. David Bannister

Classic song on a classic album.

  15. judy Girl

Thanks for these genius words...I really appreciate it. Gregg rivals the works of any famous American writer...imo...and I study literature...

  16. Carl Weaver

Beautiful song from a great album. Never tire of hearing this.

  17. Brian Carter

I could listen to this song over and over, it never gets old. Going to grave sites in Macon this fall and plan to sit, play a few tunes, eat at H & H and tour the big house. Miss the band! Many do not know how they started a whole new style of music by themselves and struggled till it stuck. A

  18. judy Girl

Some of the very best music came of this album. I have always wondered, if the album cover painting, is supposed to be Gregg, Duane, or a mixture of both....

There were many times in my life that I felt like I was 'the multicolored Lady.' This song was so relatable that for many years, every time I heard it, I cried.

  55. Michael J

Considering all the flack rock music gets for inciting suicide, it'd be nice to see this one get press for preventing one, maybe next time those two subjects meet. This is a wonderful, uplifting tune.

  56. ann cooley

The 70s were good to Gregg; no drug damage to his voice - yet. Laid Back, Playing up a Storm, & 1974 Live Album are his best in this time period. The strings and horns turned his sad blues jazzy. So lucky to have to have had your unique voice Gregg, so lucky to have had you as long as we did. Thank you.

  57. Vickie Harmon

Love, Peace and Gregg Allman Always.

I've listened to this song for 44 years. - Every time is like the very
    first time.

    judy Girl

That, I believe, is the mark of a brilliant piece of work. As you grow and times change, the words change along with you...so they save you when you're young and they save you when you're old. I KNOW he changed his words as he grew up too....

    JP-A1A

That was the first album I ever bought, I was about 13!

  63. URNsane2use Realname

This whole album was a true "Masterpiece" & I have been listening to it ever since it came out 43+ yrs ago. I remember it from my exile in Minot ND while I was in the USAF. the winter of 74 was the dreariest I've ever felt in my life. I got out of there right before Christmas. From the smoldering heat to that place to wait for my release was a shocker. But this music was like magic.
RIP Gregg, I'll be along shortly.

  64. Crystal Nelson

This will be my funeral song. RIP, Gregg. Love you, man!

This and It Ain't No Use, off of Playing up a Storm album really helped me get through tough times. In fact, all their music (Gregg and his band AND, of course, the ABBs, really are kind of like a religion...one subscribes to a laid back way of being..."Look inside yourself, and if you don't see what you like, leave your mind alone for just a while." (ain't waistin time), he also ended it with "and go get high' and 'look outside yourself, We'll all get by; He used the get high one on this album...and as he became sober, he used "get by and awhile.' I know the punctuation here sucks, but, you get my point...the fact is, these songs are part of who I am and what I know.....Thanks to the brothers for getting us through...
    From a Sister,
    Sincerely Me....
BTW, I was disappointed to find out there was a Rome Georgia...it changed the song...if you know what I mean....?
