Allman Brothers Band, The - Southbound Lyrics

Well I'm Southbound, Lord I'm comin' home to you.
Well I'm Southbound, baby, Lord I'm comin' home to you.
I got that old lonesome feelin' that's sometimes called the blues.

Well I been workin' every night, travelin' every day.
Yes I been workin' every night, traveling every day.
You can tell your other man, sweet daddy's on his way.
Aww, ya better believe.

Well I'm Southbound.
Whoa I'm Southbound.
Well you can tell your other man, Sweet daddy's on his way.

[Guitar solo]

Got your hands full now baby, as soon as I hit that door.
You'll have your hands full now woman, just as soon as I hit that door.
Well I'm gonna make it on up to you for all the things you should have
had before.

Lord, I'm Southbound.
Yes I'm Southbound.
Whoa I'm Southbound, baby.
Said I'm Southbound.
Well I'm gonna make it on up to you for all the things you should
have had before.

[Piano solo]
[Guitar solo]

  14. Michael Miller

    Acceptable

  15. David Scott

when I first bought this album in the early seventies I thought the musicianship was great ..now i listen back from nearly 50 years later and being a jazx sax, flute, piano player ..i find it ..well just boring now ...sorry but it's not that good

    Gonzo II

typical jazz haughtiness....a bit sad after all.

    Scott W

This is hard driving, non ending, unrelenting "going down the highway, get the hell out of my way or I'll kick your butt" music.

    P Dag

guess you'll just have to keep cranking out those awe inspiring flute solos huh?

    Sara Harwell

    Rusell Shaw

Donald what about jaimoe he was there the whole time too

  17. Robert Bosch

When the Allman Brothers did their fillmore east live album, which was for sure one of their best recorded albums, of any one probably ever recorded, you have to say that the studio version of this one of southbound was exceedingly as great.

  18. Lauren D. Tamayo

Love this song, one of the best bands of the 70's. 70's music was the best! So many great songs. They don't make music like that anymore.

  19. Tim Tully

By the way, anyone who likes this tune and still hasn't got enough speeding tickets, another one you'll love is Little Feat's "Let It Roll." Lots of versions on YT, the live ones even better and longer than the studio version. You'll love it. And now that I think about it, check out Skynyrd's "Call Me the Breeze" by J. J. Cale. Right up there with these. Rock on!

    Dapper Dude

Gotta love Skynard's version of Breeze. So much better than Cale's. Don't care that he wrote it. His version is so tepid, it oughta be called "They Call Me The Snail".

  20. tom johnston

I fee like I am truckin down the road with a heavy load comin home to my Big Big Mama on this one...Hey Big Mama I loves you woman

  21. Tim Tully

The great (and still alive!) Chuck Leavell playing piano.

    Robert Sloan

I saw him with the stones in seattle. Gotta love Chuck, the guys a great musician and a good dude. Hes a tree farmer and a conservationist as well as a fucking kick ass pianist

  22. Frank Tizzoni

I could be this little boy in 1973... Today I'm 48. RIP Duane and Greg your music will remain immortal.

  25. David S.

    This song is pure genius

    Why yes, I fart Rainbows!

Yes, and what still gets me to this day, is why it did not become a hit! i mean, I grew up in the big city and this tune-age was not on our pop music stations.

    Why yes, I fart Rainbows!

Oh, wait ... maybe that's because I grew up in the big city ... Yeah, that must be it.

@Psycho9263 I'm so glad you made this comment. Was listening on the way to Toledo Ohio from Adams MA. Very end 15 minutes of the trip. No ticket, same vehicle.

I'm not a real Southerner. Just have appreciated the Allman Brothers and Dickie Betts since childhood.

  33. Ian Colthart

I'm 25, so this was way before my time. I had my mother's old record player, and she had picked this vinyl up from a yard sale. When the piano solo kicked in, I was hooked immediately. RIP Gregg and Duane

    Todd Van Fleet

You're never too young to Rock n Roll!
Stay curious my man. Discovering the good stuff on vinyl. I can relate.
    Into piano solos?
    Check out Nicky Hopkins.
He played with them all and died too young.
Also Leon Russel. With Joe Cocker. Mad Dogs and Englishmen.

Not a button pushing DJ in the world can touch that stuff.

These guys actually played at my prom. Yes, I am old. And the originals were still alive. My sailboat (of the same name) came with its own theme song. Never gets tired.
