Allman Brothers Band, The - Melissa Lyrics
Crossroads, seem to come and go, yeah.
The gypsy flies from coast to coast
Knowing many, loving none,
Bearing sorrow havin' fun,
To sweet Melissa... mmm...
Freight train, each car looks the same, all the same.
And no one knows the Gypsy's name
No one hears his lonely sighs,
There are no blankets where he lies.
In all his deepest dreams the Gypsy flies
with sweet Melissa... mmm...
Again he's on the run,
Sunbeams shining through his hair,
Appearing not to have a care.
Well, pick up your gear and Gypsy roll on, roll on.
Crossroads, will you ever let him go? (Lord, Lord)
Will you hide the dead man's ghost,
Or will he lie, beneath the clay,
or will his spirit float away?
But I know that he won't stay without Melissa.
Yes I know that he won't stay without Melissa.

You look really good for 51, you look like you're in your 30s. Cool to see people still commenting on this song, I just discovered it today while riding in the car with my dad, just cruisin' around listening to Allman Brothers.
My dad named me after this song, too 😊

i am still shaking from the spirituality ...2 months later
just left macon, greg's crypt is inscribed with......, again the morning's, come again he's on the run.sunbeams shinin' thru his hair appearing not to have a care, well pick up your gear and gypsy roll on, roll on.....very spiritual... freight trains each car looks the same, there all the same is a rail line running along side the rose hill cemetery

Rahsaan from the Howard Stern Wrap Up Show brought me here.
✨💐💜💐✨
My Dad named me after a street in Anaheim.
The lyrics: "Crossroads, will you ever let him go" is perhaps a reference to Robert Johnson, blues guitarist, who went to a crossroad and solded his soul to the devil.

My sister named her daughter after this song after it kept playing on the radio each night
This song always comes to mind when I meet a 'Melissa'. Love, love it.
Eat a peace is iconic. Love it.
I've been listening to the Allman bros. for 48 years now.
Just hearing this song in 2019 and it's tooo dope!!
Talk about timelessness! My vagabond of a heart is such a sucker for this masterpiece..
This is a phenomenal song!
Makes me think of my dad's good friend who passed a few months back. They both were huge AB fans and this is one of my faves. Fortunately still have my dad.
The chord changes in this song are brilliant, subtle, and totally without precedent. The only chord changes I've ever encountered that are comparable are in "Georgia" - - so we're talking about Greg Allman being in the same league as Hoagy Carmichael. What a genius he was!
I must have played this song on my guitar a thousand times over the years.
Our sweet pearl.
i loved a sweet Melissa. coolest gf i ever had. dating her was worth the broken heart.
The guitar never sounded better! Dickie, Duane and Gregg you are all legends of your craft. Sweet Melissa...
the one and Allmans brothers band I love this song been listing to it for over 45 yrs God Bless Greg Allman!
Everyone has a story about where a certain song takes them to a certain place... I would love to hear them all... PEACE
Will he lie beneath the clay. Will his spirit fall away. But I know he won't stay without Melissa.
What's with the Sarah Mclachlan pics at the end?
My baby girl will be born in November , I am naming Her after this beautiful song !
Brokeback Mountain brought me here.
Bad ass!! That's all there is to say!!
this song only went to #86 on the pop charts in 1972!!!
I agree there will never be a another band like the Allman Brothers!!!!
Hey cousin, good selection! Bob McAlister
It's pretty clear the lyric implies crossroads in a relationship; a point where someone must make a choice between breaking it off or carrying on. Every mention of a "crossroads" in American music is not about Robert Johnson.
There's good music, but you've gotta find it or be open to it. But I love the Allman Brothers since the 70s. I'm of Color and grew up on rock and alternative rock music.
One of my favorite songs ❤ Universal music
I always heard this song was about a dog. What do you guys think?
Maybe you're thinking about Shannon, by Henry Gross.
Too many Melissa's in Crescent City Ca.
my sister was going to name her daughter Calissa but i played this song for her and it was no contest after that -- Proud to have Melissa as my niece
Heard plenty about the crossroads Robert J. but never with Allman Bros. reference.
This song has a great story. Look it up at Songfacts.com I believe it is. There is a little girl out there that is not getting royalties. He tossed it and Duane took it out of the garbage. Written I believe at 17 in high school (check that part). He could never get a name to fit. It was his turn to go get the beer and chips. A little girl came in with a mother or grandmother and she was running around and she said "Sweet Melissa" Song was finished. Eat a Peach was a great album. I wish Duane could of seen how far they went
I think some people are so sad and stupid they vote songs like this down. For goodness sake.
in your honor 👍👍👍👍👍
Gin n tonic, and this song. Yeah
This song makes me feel peaceful. Unfortunately, I am aghast that people don;t know Melissa was a black woman.
