God is love, but all love is not God. Anyone can have love, but that does NOT mean that they have God.

He is not only love. In saying this, we diminish all that He is, which is much MORE than Love alone! This is a beautiful song, but it treads dangerously close to leading one to believe that God's other characteristics are not as important as His love, which is just simply not true.

Sarah Gibson I love this. Sometimes I think we focus on the word ‘love’ and we have our ideas of what that is that don’t necessarily reflect God Himself. Some of the attributes you mention actually inspire love and adoration, it would be nice to see him exalted for his majesty, his kindness, his power and restraint, his hiddenness, his wisdom, patience etc. These things inspire awe, respect, love and worship for me!

But I am also agree when you said that He is not "love alone" because He is faithful, holy, just etc. But in 1 cor 13 we can read that without love there is nothing. The love is inseparable from truth. So, all the characteristics of God are inseparable and we can say that He is love and love alone because his love is perfect and composed of his holiness, his justice etc. :)

God is not love and love alone unfortunately. The only all-encompassing characteristic of God is that he is HOLY. When we worship a single characteristic of God (love being the most popular) we fail to see his fullness. "Holy holy holy" is what the angels will sing for eternity. Not "loving loving loving."

I think it checks out, actually. The metaphysical truth is--God is existence itself, "whole" or holy indeed, but that love is "all" he is, not in a diminished way, but because love is the base sum of existence, and existence at its height. It permeates existence at every level, because existence is love. We diminish love in its fullness otherwise to some human emotion or similar, rather than self-donation to another. God cannot not love because he is love, through and through. That's the entirety of his personality, so to speak, in an infinitely fuller way than we might imagine. If you're interested in metaphysics I recommend "The One and the Many" by Norris Clarke.

The title of this song is SCRIPTURALLY ACCURATE. God is love and love alone. It is based upon 1 John 4:8 which states that "God is love". It does not state that God HAS love, it states that he IS Love. There is no other attribute in all of scripture that is identified with God himself in this way, every other quality is described merely as something that he possesses. Now if a person thinks that there is something about God that is inconsistent with Love, it is that person who needs to understand more. 1 John 4:8 remains the truth. God Is EXISTENTIALLY identified with Love.
