“If it’s not one thing it’s another” is literally one of the realest lines of words I’ve heard in a worship song. This song opened my eyes. Jesus, thank you for loving me even when I don’t deserve it.

You make it beautiful...No other Creator could take broken pieces and mold a masterpiece the way you do Lord!

Where have these people been? I’ve been a Christian for most all my life, but hearing good, theologically correct music like this nearly makes me want to give up all my secular music for good!

As just music? This is beautiful. As theology? It is atrocious. No one can deny the capacity every person has to sin, but Christ followers are not licensed to continue in the habit of sin. Read I John Chapter 3. Jesus set us free. Free from what? Not just death, but sin and death. We declare victory in Jesus. What victory? Over both sin and death. A new creation? Yes, who is no longer prisoner to the flesh. Ultimately, it comes down to the fact that God has not only the power to save us, but the power to change us. Don't let people fool you with neo-Calvinism - you are not a prisoner to total depravity. That is what the Holy Spirit came to do. That is what being born again is all about - becoming a new person. "Sin I will, Sin I must, If I don't, I'll surely bust" is a defeatist attitude. And no, believing that the God who told you to "be holy" will empower you to live a holy life, does not amount to self-righteousness or salvation by works. This is why so many people who identify as followers of Christ live such shallow unfulfilling lives. I work at a university and the reality is that with rare exception you cannot see any difference in the habits of students who profess Christ and those who don't. And you can talk about grace all you want (It is real and beautiful), but at some point there should be a difference. Those 12 guys who followed Jesus around were not just forgiven, but the way they lived was radically changed.

Christina, you must have ESPN to get that out of that song. I guarantee you they believe in the doctrine of total depravity which is the Calvinist belief that God forgives you but leaves you with the same defeated nature. The type of inner working you described is referred to as sanctification and again I assure you they do not believe in that Wesleyan doctrine. By the way, I am not a sinner - I am a child of God. Your child may have lied before and has the capacity to lie again - do you make a habit of referring to him as a liar?

I wish you all the best. I work at a state university in the U.S. and unfortunately, the students who profess faith in Christ live virtually no different than those who make no profession. That is why I am so concerned about clarity in theology. Again - all the best.

@Glenn Gulia , I realize there's probably no point in replying to a year-old comment, and the cascade of theological errors in your comments would take a far longer correction/refutation than is reasonable in a comment form, but I had to say this: your definition of the doctrine of total depravity is the most majestically wrong definition I've ever seen of that frequently-misconstrued doctrine, and your reference to sanctification as a "Wesleyan doctrine" (when it is in fact a core part of all Christian doctrine, though of course understood differently by different streams of thought) is even worse. I say this, btw, as a Presbyterian pastor, a former student of J. I. Packer, someone who has written on the Heidelberg Catechism, etc., etc.--in other words, when it comes to the Reformed tradition and the various shapes of Calvinist doctrine, that's my home ground.


To bring this back around to this song: the fact that you are a child of God doesn't make you not a sinner. The Apostle John would say that for you to declare so is to make God a liar and shows that the truth is not in you (1 John 1:8-10). The deepest reality of our hearts is that we are children of God, if such we are; but the reality of our sin is also very deep, and if we don't engage with that honestly, we will leave far more destruction than life in our wake. This song wrestles honestly with that painful truth, and that is--*theologically*--a good thing.

The poetry of this song is beautiful to the soul.

yes we are sinners and he will always forgive us if we are genuinely asking for forgiveness but we should not abide in sin. If we live in sin we are not of God. Christ said we are in the world but not of the world. we sin but we should not abide in it because the grace then becomes useless. Grace is not an "ok" for sinning. Christ must be at the center of our lives for us to change and we must want it. This song is beautiful but do not let it be misconstrued.

@Brandon Burrell We are not supposed to walk after the Spirt, but IN the Spirit. Anyone who walks in the Spirit will crucify the flesh and grow in sanctification. Calvinism is basically an erroneous rationalization of sin, so we can have a false peace of mind without truly and fully surrendering our lives to Christ.

Yes we will sin because we are in these mortal bodies but we are convicted in our hearts through the he Holy Spirit, we repent sincerely and for forgiveness. He forgives us. We stay closer to Him and start to live everyday for His Glory. Much of His love, Much of His peace to you all.

+Hein van der Merwe I think it's about how we feel, that we don't deserve God's love all of the time. We feel like we keep making mistakes, and that we keep falling short. We know better, but we keep getting tangled and snared by sin. But God , doesn't care about any of it . You don't have to be perfect to follow God. Heck it's much easier to accept Him in you life when realize your brokeness. He wants are hearts, He wants us to want to draw closer to Him. Because He makes the brokeness into something beautiful.

Our identity is in Christ, made whole and righteous through His death and ressurection. So how can we still be called sinners? And again, there is no scripture to back the doctrine that God's children are sinners?? We are free (though we still sin, this is not our identity).

Your Identity is in Christ, and Christ is your anointing in the fire and power of His most Holy Spirit.

Stumbled across this group on Pandora. This group has opened my eyes to all the great singer/songwriters in this genre of music. This might be my favorite music genre now - I'm a new fan. This group has such incredible lyrics and harmonies they are almost haunting.  Watching You Tube is a bonus because you SEE the passion they have for their lyrics.  Can't say enough praise for this music and the artists they are!
