Alison Moyet - The English U Lyrics
I'll preserve the U
Preserve the English U, for you
For you because you always knew
Where it would be
Safeguard the English U, for you
For you, because I need
I need to find the you
You wanted me to see
I want to know the comma
Though I neglect to honour
Every breath implied, uncertain of its need
Happenchance I am wanton
You were always sure to tell me what to read
I am made quite otherwise it seems
A criminal to grammar
To apostrophe - the hammer
All that you made matter as to dream
Read to me, I'm always listening
I wish to spell correctly
To spell is elementary
And that I fail is not to disagree
I'm pretty sound with tenses
With when and which and whences
But the order of the letters are degrees
I am made quite otherwise it seems
A criminal to grammar
To apostrophe - the hammer
All that you made matter as to dream
Read to me, I'm always listening
You kept beautiful words in soft carbon pages
As beautiful worlds went missing in stages
Scattered in sandstorms and stolen in rages
A cache of books inside your pillow cases
Read to me, I'm always listening

Absolutely right! Saw her in concert October 2017 and that's how she introduced the song.
I love Guy's mix on the harp, I can imagine Alison playing this in front of a complete Orchestra if she wanted to. It's mesmerising. #alisonmoyet

I love this dreamy and lush song. And I'm dedicating it to Joel & Lia, the lovable linguistics fanatics who help to preserve the English language in all of its quirky idiosyncrasies. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDksS5LrxkU
Isn't this just sublime ? Love it <3 .
Thank you :-) . I think someone said that "The Rarest Birds" is basically about Brighton, which makes sense as, I believe, Alison is now living there .
I won't attempt to to read anything into the the other songs as my interpretations are often somewhat simplistic .
Hello John, any appreciation on messages posted, is always welcome, and no, it was not a `Tactical` error. Alison and her record company, decided to showcase her new album on a Friday, because of the support that she gets, from one of the most high profile Broadcasters in the U.K, Graham Norton, and his own Media ratings across the BBC...As for Alison not seeking "win a new audience of younger fans", she mentioned in an interview, during her stint at the Isle of Wight Festival recently, that she is happy/content, with whatever level of success, her music and career, has brought her so far. Not many artists would ever have this level of self awareness, but she is a `Wise-Woman`, who knows herself and her work, it would seem...
Just saw her in DC last night. Yes, this is about Brighton. Rarest Birds I mean. Englis U is about her Mum.
+bhols52 Hope you thoroughly enjoyed the experience :-)
