Alison Krauss - You Don't Know Me Lyrics

You give your hand to me
And then you say hello
And I can hardly speak
My heart is beating so
And anyone can tell
You think you know me well
But you don't know me

No you don't know the one
Who dreams of you at night
And longs to kiss your lips
Ànd whoms to hold you tight
To you I'm just a friend
That's all I've ever been
But you don't know me

For I never knew, the art of making love
Though my heart aches with love for you
Afraid and shy, I let my chance go by
The chance, that you might have loved me too

You give your hand to me
And then you say goodbye
You watched me walk away
Beside my lucky guy
To never, never know
The one who loves you so
No you don't know me

For I never knew, the art of making love
Though my heart aches with love for you
Afraid and shy, I let my chance go by
The chance, that you might have loved me too

You give your hand to me
And then you say goodbye
You watched me walk away
Beside my lucky guy
To never, never know
The one who loves you so
No; you don't; know me...

This is an amazing piece of work in every respect. The arrangement, the instrumentation, the mix, the execution -- it's as close to perfect as any recording I've ever heard. I even like the slightly excessive reverb on her remarkably clear, lovely voice.

The thing is so damn subtle. On the initial note of each phrase in the verse, I think I hear vibes. At certain points I swear I hear cello or bowed bass. Definitely nylon-stringed guitar kicks in during the bridge. Everyone is in perfect pitch. The tempo delivers maximum emotional impact.

I cannot get this recording out of my head, and I'm fine with that.

  9. 김선우

    I love you

  18. Kenneth Halloran

When Allison sings, I believe every word. Near perfect delivery.

  19. Mike Eldridge

soft and gentle she makes the music come alive to those who love great

  20. Stephen Lutz

I have never heard anyone's voice so frequently described as angelic. Why? There's just no better way to put it. So beautiful, resonant, pure and entrancing. I just want to close my eyes when I hear her voice and let it flow right through me.

    Rhonda Webb

Check out Eva Cassidy.  I stumbled across her a couple years ago.  Totally different than AK, but an astounding talent.  Be sure to check out the Night Line special that tells her story.  Also Mick Fleetwood does a clip about Eva.  But YES, Alison is simply angelic, pure and near perfection.  Brad Paisley stated when receiving their Grammy for Whiskey Lullaby that if  he made it to Heaven and the angels didn't sing as pretty as Alison....he would be very disappointed LOL!

  21. T. Burke Edwards

Is this a girl song or a boy song? Cindy Walker wrote it for Eddy Arnold, so you make the call... Love is strange. Here's the writer singing her own song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7c4DqdRN6jE

  22. Jacquie Booth

    Just love it.

  23. AR15 nut

Just listened to Bette Midler's version of this song. Don't bother. No offense to the divine miss M but this beautiful love song should not be turned into a rock number. Alison Krauss nails it!

  24. AR15 nut

A great song originally sung by Lenny Welsh; I think Allison Krauss demonstrates that it is even better when rendered by a female singer. I knew girls in my teenage years who loved someone deeply but were so shy that they could never find the courage to tell the guy that they loved him. I felt such sympathy for them and thought to myself what might have been.

    T. Burke Edwards

Is this a girl song or a boy song? Cindy Walker wrote it for Eddy Arnold, so you make the call... Love is love. As for facts (if anybody really cares): Eddy Arnold (1955), Jerry Vale (1956), Jeanne Black (1960), Lenny Welch (1960)... Patti Page... Ray Charles... etc. It's a long list!

  25. joseph grega

Classic song acompany us in Dining room ...

  26. Morris McLean

    Sung with such appropriate sentiment.

  27. John Burnette

    my neighbors a listening too!!!!!!

The Demographics are more even now.

  29. Chuck Hinkle

What do you think, could Alison Krauss's cover of "You Don't Know Me" beat County Music's Icon Eddie Arnold's original song?

    Chuck Hinkle

I vote yes she could beat Eddie Arnold.

  30. Chuck Hinkle

DJ Charlie Monk(Mayor of Music City) put Alison Krauss's cover of "'You Don't Know Me" up against Icon Eddie Arnold's original song this morning on "Willie's Road House" and had an e-mail vote for the best Artist. Not a fair comparison, of these two artists, for a Demographic, of this show. I did not stick around for the results. Not Fair!

    Lauren Kay

Michael Beck she is better in person! And is funny to boot. An angel in our midst. :)

    peneleapai

O No, another thing to do "before I leave this world"!
For some reason, when I thought to reply to you, I just thought of Cara Dillon ... I always wanted to see Cara, somehow not even considering Allison, ..( Too *out of my reach* ?) .. What a valuable hidden thought/feeling I was never conscious of having. Thank you 💓

    Steve Klemetti

Mickey Gilley still has the best version of this.

  53. Ellison Brown

Beautiful the true voice of an Angel <3

  54. Rick Sanchez

She sings it well through her voice and her nose...if you get my drift

  55. Rick Sanchez

Sweetest singer in Country music in 30 years...This is real country...Thing is she is doing covers...Thing is you all need to re evaluate what real country music is.

    Rick Sanchez

What I mean is she is singing real country music...The stuff that that's being spread today isn't country music...it'sjust mediocre progressive crap

  56. john crabtree

  61. Ian Ross

    brilliant

  62. DrummerBoy

Anybody who gives this a thumbs down is just plain jealous they will never sing anywhere near as good as this!

    kmzstube

33 people at this point. An actual song that doesn't mention beer or pickup trucks must be difficult for them to sit through.

    Lars Wallin

Well it's just 20 year olds who don't like the fact she is not signing about getting drunk, driving trucks, and showing her ass.

  63. Rick Sanchez

Alison always makes a cover her own,...Always

  64. TheAcworthdude

    T. Burke Edwards

    Monte West

If they sing songs for a thousand years there will never be another like this lady..w/40 nominations & 27 grammy wins..the best ever..a voice & life of singing & sharing..an American original treasure. & legend.🤷‍♀️

  69. Tone

Interesting twist on the original lyric's. Nice job Alison. One of my favorite songs and my favorite present day singer. You really are up there with Ella Fitzgerald and Ray Charles. Bless you.
