Alan Parsons Project, The - The Turn Of A Friendly Card Lyrics

There are unsmiling faces and bright plastic chains
And a wheel in perpetual motion
And they follow the races and pay out the gains
With no show of an outward emotion

And they think it will make their lives easier
For God knows up till now it's been hard
But the game never ends when your whole world depends
On the turn of a friendly card
No the game never ends when your whole world depends
On the turn of a friendly card

There's a sign in the desert that lies to the west
Where you can't tell the night from the sunrise
And not all the king's horses and all the king's men
Have prevented the fall of the unwise

For they think it will make their lives easier
And God knows up till now it's been hard
But the game never ends when your whole world depends
On the turn of a friendly card
No the game never ends when your whole world depends
On the turn of a friendly card

But a pilgrim must follow in search of a shrine
As he enters inside the cathedral...

the old story goes that some will play the high-low card with the devil for eternal life and wealth with their soul in the balance. the story always ends with the house winning with the king of diamond over a 9. this story has been around for years. you will notice the card on the album cover is the king of diamonds, which is also the stage name of a danish metal singer ( king diamond) . a few years ago his band came out with a story song named " 13 inventations" which is a modern retelling of the story.

just a little history to the story, brillently told by the APP.

I remember me as a 16 year old girl sitting in my bedroom with my mom next to me, listening to the turn of a friendly card... i was literally seduced and so passionate about this music and lyrics that i needed someone to share my feelings with... i instantly memorized all the lyrics... i’m in 50’s now and i haven’t forgotten one single thing... Allan Parson captured my heart in no time... this truly is a masterpiece of timeless beauty 🔥

As life long listener of PF i can say that Alan Parsons certainly have Pink Floyd sound. And this song sounds like mini album of theirs. Maybe is English thing... Never mind i love it :)

Used to listen this song over and over when our grandson was expected to be born. For me this song is the embodiment of what of what i could share with him regarding "lessons of life". He's 3 years old now and a deeply loved little boy and sensitive child!

November 2019, I've had a song stuck in my head for the past eight months or so. no idea how to explain to anyone what the song was because I didn't know the artist, the title of the song or the lyrics. And not being any kind of a good singer, I couldn't get the melody through to anyone. Today, I finally got someone to recognize what it was I was trying to hum. All this time I thought maybe it was Asia or Toto or someone of the like. Turns out it was eye in the sky by the Alan Parsons Project. This realization is what led me here. This is the first time I've ever heard this song. 42 years on this planet, listening to bands like ELP, Yes, Rush, Pink Floyd etc. I cannot for the life of me explain how this has escaped me all this time. I blame the people that brought me up in this world. So glad to be able to listen now though. It's like being so familiar with all that old music and wishing there was some way get excited about it again & here I am... Thank you for uploading this. This is incredible!

back in 1983 i got a Commodore 64 and hooked it up to the TV. no windows back then, just lots of books on code. so i use to do several hits off the bong and listen to Alan Parsons Project. Turn of a Friendly Card and Pyramid. Then just plug away at the keys. i still love the bong, Alan Parsons, and i have learned some amazing tricks when it comes to computers, to this day...........

  62. J.... P....

one of the greatest albums ever

  63. B.... c....

    the best forever.

  64. R.... C....

You forgot to put this three songs from the album in the video:
    - Time
    - Games People Play
    - The Gold Bug
Especially Time and Games People Play the most memorable songs of the entire album.
Otherwise, thanks for the video with the album!

    R.... C....

This is side “b” they’re supposed to to be play one after another. Side “a” had the songs you mentioned.

  65. N.... D....

  67. M.... S....

I just got this album forty years old. I splurged a bill on a player to hear this gold! It's amazing

  68. J.... K....

man this brings back so many memories.

  69. N.... D....

I took my chances and I mostly failed.

    N.... D....

From now on I must be who I am. hi

  70. M.... C....

    8:58 this is sooooooo great.

  71. M.... C....

Man this is so fucking good.

  72. M.... 1....

  73. b.... ....

Amazing, criminally under-rated concept album and given the spread of gambling almost everywhere these days completely prophetic. The ending is simply stunning, the guitar gives way to a brace of trumpets as the ominous strings get louder swirling mix that sounds like peril is upon one, stunning concept, stunning recording.

  74. J.... V....

Alan is a bloody genius !! I love him...yesterday now and tomorrow

    J.... V....

Correct it. Eric Woolfson wrote these songs. Just buy the deluxe edition of this album and you will hear Eric's demos of all these songs.

  75. f.... ....

Alan, Eric and the gang helped me survive some rough days. Nice now that things are better I can listen and say thank you, whether it is the middle of the day or better yet, the middle of the night.

  76. E.... F....

    Very awesome band

  77. R.... ....

I wasted or spent several years listening to Projects and specially this song and the album. I advise you all, after this one play "the ace of the swords" and then "Nothing left to lose" believe me,the result will be awesome ! " The gold bug" and "snake eyes" completely ruined the musical combination. someone tell it to Alan Parsons himself !

    R.... ....

I have to disagree, "snake eyes" and "nothing left to lose" are an important part of this "story", the initial excitement of gambling, following the inevitable loss and feeling of doom as one is now broke and desperate.

  78. R.... C....

As sound engineer for The Beatles, Alan Parsons is cherished by Brits. Everything this man has ever produced is mysterious, quirky, often ahead of time, and ***FUN***.

  79. A.... F....

È sempre così bella.. Senza fine, quasi eterna

  80. I.... ....

    Bársonyra hulló könnycseppek.

  81. R.... M....

The Alan Parsons Project was Eric Woolfson and Alan Parsons....Everybody else were fill-ins, who would come and go, and many sessions musicians.

  82. M.... D....

I listened this album in 1984. It is a fabulous music.

  83. j.... w....

I played this on a cassette when I went out to Vegas in 1986. Man, did I get burned at the tables. But I'd do it again in a friggin heartbeat! Good times, baby!😎

  84. R.... Y....

  85. m.... ....

"There are unsmiling faces and bright plastic chains, and a wheel in perpetual motion..."

    m.... ....

Describes gambling at a casino to a tee, no one is there to socialize it's about the action and the wheel has to be the roulette table of course.

  86. V.... P....

  87. C.... ....

This is music! No more words needed!

  88. A.... ....

Also, this one reminds me of Kaiji, a gambling anime, quite good, 100% recommended, you should watch it!!

  89. P.... ....

The worst part...…….all my lost loves. All my past dreams...……..All my broken promises, one's made and ones given.

  90. A.... L....

The best way to start my day before prison-like high school in 1982. This album, my Sanyo turntable, my Kenwood amp and some really big speakers.

  91. a.... i....

0:00 The Turn Of A Friendly Card Part 1

    [Part 1]
There are unsmiling faces and bright plastic chains
And a wheel in perpetual motion
And they follow the races and pay out the gains
With no show of an outward emotion
And they think it will make their lives easier
For God knows up till now it's been hard

    [Chorus]
But the game never ends when your whole world depends
On the turn of a friendly card
No the game never ends when your whole world depends
On the turn of a friendly card

    [Part 2]
There's a sign in the desert that lies to the west
Where you can't tell the night from the sunrise
And not all the king's horses and all the king's men
Have prevented the fall of the unwise
For they think it will make their lives easier
And God knows up till now it's been hard

    [Chorus]

    [Part 3]
But a pilgrim must follow in search of a shrine
As he enters inside the cathedral

    2:44 Snake Eyes

    [Verse 1]
    Snake eyes
    Seven eleven
    Don't let me down boys
    Gimme snake eyes
    Seven eleven
    Don't let me down tonight
No don't let me down tonight

    [Chorus]
    Just one minute more
Give me just one minute more
It's gonna be alright, it's gonna be alright
    Just one minute more
Then I'll walk right through that door
    It's gonna be alright
    It's gonna be alright
    If ya gimme

    [Verse 2]
    Snake eyes
    Seven eleven
    Don't let me down now
    Gimme snake eyes
    Seven eleven
    Don't let me down tonight
No don't let me down tonight

    [Chorus]
    Just one minute more
    Gimme just one minute more
It's gonna be alright, it's gonna be alright
    But you gotta
    Gimme one minute more
    Gimme one minute more
It's gonna be alright, it's gonna be alright

    [Verse 1]

    [Guitar Solo]

    [Chorus]
    Just one minute more
Then I'll walk right through that door
    But'cha gotta
    Gimme one more marker more
Then I'll walk right through that door
Gimme one more, don't let me down
It's gonna be alright, alright, alright

    8:57 Nothing left to lose

    [Verse 1]
Nothing's good the news is bad
The heat goes on and it drives you mad
Scornful thoughts that fly your way
You should turn away cause there's nothing more to say

    [Verse 2]
You gave the best you had to give
You only have one life to live
You fought so hard you were a slave
After all you gave there was nothing left to save

    [Chorus]
You've got nothing left to lose (you've got nothing left to lose)
No you've got nothing left to lose (who'd wanna be standing in your shoes)

    [Verse 3]
You read the book you turn the page
You change your life in a thousand ways
The dawn of reason lights your eyes
    With the key you realise
To the kingdom of the wise

    [Accordion Solo]

    [Chorus]

    [Verse 4]
    Nothing ventured nothing gained
    No more lingering doubt remained
    Nothing sacred or profane
    Everything to gain
    Cause you've nothing left

    [Snake Eyes Reprise]

13:05 The Turn Of A Friendly Card Part 2
    [Verse]
There are unsmiling faces in fetters and chains
On a wheel in perpetual motion
Who belong to all races and answer all names
With no show of an outward emotion

    [Pre-Chorus]
And they think it will make their lives easier
But the doorway before them is barred

    [Chorus]
And the game never ends when your whole world depends
On the turn of a friendly card
No the game never ends when your whole world depends
On the turn of a friendly card
