This song is dope lyrically and has a cool theme that's worth giving some thought. As I understand that theme is that we should always seek to find the middle ground between extremes. As I understand Ammonia Avenue was literally a street in between two sides of a chemical plant. A metaphorical middle ground that exist safely between two toxic extremes. That idea can be applied to many different things. Religion and science, rich and poor, black and white etc when opposing forces exist is good to try to come to a middle ground of compromise rather than becoming toxic by going too far in embracing one extreme or another. That's what I think they mean by "finding ammonia avenue", I could be dead wrong but in times of struggle thinking of this song reminds me to try to find a compromise.

It reminds me of one day I spent working at the stock yard when I was young. That was a rough Saturday. I don't know how those fellas do it. Maybe it was just me.

In Hebrew  AMMON means "belief" and  also "craftmanship", while the "ia" (Ya) of AMMONIA  means  "G-D the Creator".
 Ammonia in Hebrew literally means : "Belief in G-D  the Creator.
And it takes work to get belief ,then to add more always,to strengthen it as the Jewish mystics wrote," to work at gaining truer belief like a craftsman at his trade".
 AMMON is the Hebrew word for Belief.  Ammanut means Art & also Craftsmanship. We learn that a person who desires a stronger belief in G-D must work at it                                                           diligently like a craftsman.To bring out a point for Christians to ponder : Jesus was a carpenter which is a craftsman also.
Eric Woolfson {the Composer RIP was Jewish } probably knew Ammunah in Hebrew means  Belief in One G-D, in Hebrew.                  Its a relatively well known word even by those who don't speak it well.The name Emmanuel means G_D is with us all.                         AVENUE  is French for "The WAY" or   "The PATH"  from the Latin word Via .
"AMMONIA AVENUE "  literally means  "WAY to G-D" in 2 languages.
The Hebrew word Ammona (Belief) is a given. Belief is central to every soul.     The soul KNOWS its Creator.
Avenue is from Latin (Via) & developed into French meaning the The Way {or} the PATH.
Belief comes natural to a soul,but to actually use the belief by going a certain path,        such as  Torah, Bible, Koran for example or  even a government's political path :
Consitution or Declaration of Independence, Dictatorship-Authority,Democracy,Socialism,etc.      means going down an actual Path with your belief.  We aren't discussing if Bible or                                                     Democracy or Socialism is good or even correct. Its believed in by the majority of a nation                                                & its the PATH of that nation's government.
We are to take our spiritual Belief which knows its soul,knows its G-D who Created it     and then in our own particular fashion which is special and individual                                                                                  for each individual soul take it & go down a PATH an AVENUE.       This is a physical work going down a physical path body and soul.
Without a physical body the soul has no vestment,nothing to enclothe in                                                                           down here in this physical world. It takes then a meta-pysical path.                          Such as a Pathway to serving G-D a relationship it might be Christianity,Judaism,Islam.          A non religious person might believe in Humanism  serving other humans ,loving all people            with respect,help. (This is also at the core of the 3 religions written above).
How could Beethoven,Motzart compose such beauty?                        Or in this song,how could Eric Wooolfson  write such a meaningful song?    A muse? Maybe he himsel didn't understand it!                       In Torah its explained how every melody and song comes into the mind and heart of a person         from "The World of Melody" which is another of the myriad physical and spiritual creations.Yet the World of Melody  is in the lower heavens.  For a melody,tune and words                                                                  to come down from that very high spiritual place it being just a spark from G-D                                                                     it must go down from one world to the next,to the next and at each stop it is enclothed                              with a more material  enhancement until by the time it reaches earth's plane and enters the physical brain and heart of a human composer.                                                                                                       This melody flashes into a human brain and then is instilled in the heart     as the artist works it out of his "spiritual kidneys".
End result:  all music is of G-D and the artist brings it into actuallity here in this physical world.  see it in all the verses here.   Woolfson in the last verse sings                                                                                  {Verse} "Somehow they knew" . Now what is known if not known from the             Infinite One Himself by way of your soul which is a part of Infinity in spirit?                                                                           Its inate and natural to us because its who we really are.                                                                                                       Its easier to do or know than driving a car or using your brand new tech gadget.

In Hebrew "Ammon" means belief, trust.   The "ia" at the end of the word is The Infinite One's Name.Ya
Avenue is French for "the way".
"The way to belief in G-D".   {Verse}  "Somehow they knew".                      The Torah sages knew & {Verse} "handed down"  since our Soul is a spark of G-D, they knew. 
What was handed down?  The Torah -Bible handed down from  G-D to Moses       & then Moses  gave it to Joshua who gave it to the Elders of the Tribes who gave it to      the Prophets who gave it to the Sages. Then it was passed on to the                                                 "Leaders of ten thousands" & then to the leaders of thousands,to the leaders of hundreds.
{Verse}  "& those who came to scoff were left behind to pray"which is a good thing  really.  We are always in need of G-D and His Infinitie Wisdom. By praying we                                                               might bring down that what we need from G-D. First,to praise G-D  and be thankful                                        we show our appreciation of what we have already.      By praying we admit that we have a relationship with the Infinite One. 
{Verse}  "& stone by stone they built"....All the verses may be understood.
interpreted  all the verses using the same method,but each               noticed some comments saying :                                              "Woolfson himself said that this had to do with  science                      could be interpreted in a religious matter."
Do we need a composer's permission? If each song,melody and words originate in     "The World (Gate) of Melody" which is a spiritual place and Creation of G-D's ,   why would we even need permission from anyone? Interpret as you feel.
