I've always had a question about this song:
Did the boy "stroke" Old Shep at the end, or did he "strike" him on the head.
I remember listening to this when I was 13, and crying because it sounded like he "struck" the dog in the head.
I have searched for the lyrics, and have seen it written both ways.
Anyone else wonder about this?
I am such a dog lover, that I can't imagine ever "striking" my dog in order to put him to sleep.
I have carried this question with me for about 65 years.

What a beautiful voice Elvis had.  This is such a sad song.  After I lost my last dog, I knew I could never go through such a loss again, and I haven't.

As a kid, I always cried when my sister played this for me, and now, I still do. I have cats, no dogs or kids, but it's still the same - I love them more than myself.

Over the years I've had four labs. My last one, a chocolate named Daisy had a stroke the other day. We loaded her up and took her to the vet where we had her put down. She was twelve years and nine and a half months. This was the worst experience of my life. I'd retired ten years ago and she and I had been close companions ever since. Now I'm here in my office at my computer. I fell so alone. I just don;t want to go on. I miss her so.

Was watching the video ''Elvis returns to Tupolo'',and they talked about this song I found it here,I was not prepared for the affect it had upon me , people seldom know the sorrow they carry with them,frequently manafesting in the form of illness,Elvis was a healer,praise the lord

So many wonderful memories WOW.

We had a German shepherd growing up, runt of the litter and guarded us like no ones business...someone poisoned her...she crawled towards my dad...and didn't make it to him before she died...eyes still open. I wasn't living at home, and hurt me that i wasn't there for her. I dedicate this to her...."Ginny"...all the best girls come in small packages...to my subsequent "Taurus" my first 'baby'and to all those family pets who mean the absolute world to us.

Sorry for your loss. Who could be so cruel to poison an innocent dog?

I've just sacrificed my best friend. She was a beautiful German Shepherd. Brave, loyalty, love, friendship, her eyes were honey and her welcome every night got me full of joy and love... I could never ask for more. now that she's gone I have a hole from my stomach to throat.I Love you Marla. hope you are wagging your tail somewhere waiting for me.
