Al Stewart - Peter On The White Sea Lyrics

When I took my boat out to the White Sea
I had no care in the world
Not a cloud disturbed the sky
I was dreaming only of how it might be
Then dark fell into the day
And the wind began to rise
Peter on the White Sea
Green mountains of waves
Blew all around
Peter on the White Sea
The howl of the wind, that lonesome sound
Sailors made their peace then with the Almighty
Still I kept hope in my heart
Through the salt and stormy night
Every hour the wind struck ever harder
We held on tight in the dark
As our bow rose and fell
Till we came with daylight into the harbour
Hard by the monastery walls
To the ringing of a bell
Peter on the White Sea
A day to recall when days are done
Peter on the White Sea
The first of a thousand ships to come
When I took my boat out on the White Sea
I heard my name in the wind
In the bright and empty sky
When I took my boat out to the White Sea

Wow, where has this gem been hiding? This warrants a good delve into Al Stewart's back catalog. Such an underrated talent. Alan Parsons saw something in him all those years ago..

  2. William Conqueror

Such a beautifully poignant song...the animation is beautiful as well: perfect juxtaposition of song and visual.

  3. Daniel Lee

    Beautiful.

  4. Heinz-Harald Schmidt

By the way - is there any chance to get the music sheets for this song?

  5. Heinz-Harald Schmidt

What a great song of a great musician! I wish I could see him live, but he never comes to play near my town.

  6. Joseph Stalin

I've always liked this song but I have not seen this video before - it's excellent thank you

  7. mariansommerthal

It´s not a reference to Peter White. Peter is the late Peter Wood who was
Al´s keyboard player and writer of the intro of YOTC. Also it is a song about
the tsar with the same name.

  8. Aurora Colson

    Thanks for that! :)

  9. jonnoms

That's what I assumed too but it turns out to be Peter I (Peter the Great) - (1672-1725) Tsar from 1682, Emperor from 1721.

  10. Aurora Colson

Wonderful song, on a wonderful piece of animation. Clearly a reference to Al's guitar player and old accomplice, Peter White!

The film is called 'Father and Daughter' by Michael Dudok de Wit. The full film is on YouTube.

  12. Adrian Del Campo

Please, which is the name and author of such wonderful movie? Thanks :-)
