Al Stewart - Joe The Georgian Lyrics
Now I've got my payment
For the service that I gave
They've given me my ticket
To this place beyond the grave
I suppose it's kind of funny
Thinking back on all the times we had
But it's kind of hot and smoky
In this ante-room to Hell
And I won't make up a story
'Cause you know the truth so well
It's much too late to worry
That we never had a chance
And when Joe the Georgian gets here
We will dance, dance dance
We will dance
We all set off together
On this sorry ship of state
When the captain took the fever
We were hijacked by the mate
And he steered us through the shadows
Upon an angry tide
And cast us one by one over the side
But it's kind of hot and smoky
In this ante-room to Hell
And I won't make up a story
'Cause you know the truth so well
It's much too late to worry
That we never had a chance
And when Joe the Georgian gets here
We will dance, dance dance
When Joe the Georgian gets here
We will dance
There's Kamenev, Zinoviev
Bukharin and the rest
We're sharpening our pitchforks
And we're heating up the ends
We've got a few surprises
For the mate when he appears
I hope he likes the next few million years
And it's kind of hot and smoky
In this anteroom to Hell
And I won't make up a story
'Cause you know the truth so well
It's much too late to worry
That we never had a chance
And when Joe the Georgian gets here
We will dance, dance dance
When Joe the Georgian gets here
We will dance

Al Stewart Joe The Georgian Comments
Stalin did nothing wrong.
Of course he didn't. Heh.
London Rider - When Joe the Georgian gets here, you'd better bloody, alright!!
For certain very specific definitions of "wrong..."
Really??? Stalin killed his own people instead of doing what he should to protect them! He was blindly focused on getting rid of his detractors and also getting rid of his Military persons that he distrusted. He would see the errors of his way when Russia was invaded by the Germans.
"Stalin did no wrong" is like saying, "Hitler did no wrong", or "Mohammed did no wrong". Murdering hundreds of millions of innocent men, women, & children IS wrong. For specifics, read Alexander Solzhenitsyn's "Gulag Archipeligo".
its funny the steps history takes/great song
Possibly the ONLY reference EVER to Stalin in contemporary music. Thank you, Al, for decades of solid, thoughtful, and thought-provoking lyrics and addictive music.
Al also referenced him in "Elvis at the wheel" I think
Solace records what line exactly refers to him?
I had no clue!! But now i think about it. Uncle Joe indeed was a georgian. Thx for pointing this out, live this song even more now i realised this <3
I had a feeling that's what he was talking about.
