Al Stewart - Class Of '58 Lyrics

Old jazz guys being interviewed
Thirty years beyond their prime
With memories of road shows
From the Golden Age of Swingtime
The piano player strikes a chord
Leans forward on his stool
And through they've all seen better days
They've got that air of faded cool
It's an entree of another world
One of tailcoats and victrolas
And one day they'll make TV shows
On aging rock-and-rollers
On aging rock-and-rollers

Then came the kid with the red Colorama
And the Watkins copycat echo chamber and the toothy grin
With one hand glued to the tremolo arm
While the singer moves around like an Elvis clone
They really packed them in
And every song was short and sweet, and every beat was fast
And every paper in the land said rock-and-roll won't last
You know it just won't last, it's such a rapid burn
And it's a hard, hard, hard lesson to learn
It's a hard, hard, hard lesson to learn

Well what are you going to do when it's all over?
What are you going to do right now?
What are you going to to when it's all over?
Will you get along somehow?
I just don't know
Feeling like I do right now
Ask me tomorrow

Red guitar, red guitar
You know I really miss that red guitar
Red guitar, red guitar
You know I really miss that red guitar

And you can write this on my tombstone
That'll be my fate
I'm a gradute of rock-and-roll
Class of '58

'58, '58, I'm a graduate of the class of '58
Red guitar, '58, I'm a graduate of the class of '58

And there's no use analyzing these anthems that were sung
Rock-and-roll's not good or bad
It's just the sound of being young
And it's a long long way from pompadours
And doo-wop and payola
And one day they'll make TV shows on aging rock-and-rollers
One day they'll make TV shows on aging rock-and-rollers.

Thanks very much for this. The video is great, right on the money. Soon after Al finished this recording a fan of his here in California found an old red Colorama and gave it to him for his birthday. "Rock 'n' roll is the sound of being young."

Hey, Onion3000, I dunno if you still check out You Tube, but can I just thank you very much, once again, for this remarkable extended version. Has Al ever heard it, and if so, what did he think of it?

Thanks for the kind words! As far as I know, Al hasn't heard this, but I'd love him to comment on it!

Probably the only 17 minute song that remains interesting the whole way through. (Sorry Pink Floyd)

    Um...
There's a few of Ian Anderson's fans here, would like a word with you?

'Bournemouth A Go! Go! - A Sixties Memoir' details a first-hand account of Al Stewart's original days in early 60s Rock 'n' Pop, with a foreword written by Al.

WONDERFUL! Thank you very much for the enjoyment. The piano piece @ 7:24 is masterful. The only thing I dislike about Al is that he hasn't released ENOUGH studio work. Selfish I know, but the guy is a musical and lyrical genius quite unlike anyone else.

This is effing MAGNIFICENT. Well done, sir, and many thanks for sharing it with us.

This song just have become greater for me. I loved it since I first heard it, then I found out about the single version and now this one. Unfortunately it seems a bit, er, "out of tune" at some points and the added parts doesn't seem to be on the right place, otherwise a great song which should have been released as it was in alpha-stage!
Loved the slide show as well, especially the "58" part with the german road sign which I drive past every day.

Wonderful! Brilliant video and surely the ultimate version of this song. Where on earth, though, did you find the extra three minutes of audio?

+Marvin Shaw A few years ago I bought an enormous collection of live/unreleased CDs from Al's fan club, and amongst the songs was "Class of 58" as a work in progress, the unused parts of which I've married here to the CD single version (listen to the piano fade-out at 10.03, and the change of tone at 11.40). Originally Al wanted a whole concept album based round the history of British rock and roll, but his record company said it wouldn't sell.

+Onion3000 Original version produced (and lead guitar) by Laurence Juber...

    Is this his "American Pie"?
    "English Pasty," p'raps?

Thanks for posting this extended modified version. Great slide show video too !
