Al Green - I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry Lyrics
Did you hear that lonesome whippoorwill
He sounds too good to fly
The midnight train whining low
I'm so lonesome I could cry, cry
When time goes crawling by
The moon just went behind a cloud
And I'm so lonesome that I feel I could cry, I could cry
Did you see, ever see a robin weep
When leaves begin to die?
Like me he's lost the will to live
And I'm so lonesome I could cry
[?] I could cry
Lights up a purple sky
And as I wonder, wonder where you are
I'm so lonesome I could cry, cry, I could cry
And as I wonder, wonder where you are
I'm so lonesome I could cry
If you let me, oh no
[?]
I wonder where you are
I'm so lonesome I could cry
It seems to me
I'm so lonesome I could cry
I could cry, I could cry

One of the Good Reverend' greatest recordings.....brilliant.
The only song Al Green has ever song that I didn't like
"Did you ever see a robin wee when leaves begin to die?
That mean's he's lost the will to live and I'm so lonesome I could cry."
Lawd have mercy, that's some beautiful poetry Hank wrote.

I had to hear this after the performance on "The Voice" last night. I'd forgotten how much I loved this song!
One of the best songs ever...
absolutely beautiful....
Lonesome for my wife who just died on me. Lord know I love her so much
sang it al
I could die
I love this version
My mama's music. Beautiful💋
It also sounds great at a slightly faster speed, at least in my opinion.
Anybody know where anywhere else i can find more country/soul songs of this kind? they are just amazing!
Check out Candi Staton's version of "Stand by your Man".
Dobie Gray has a lot of songs on the border of soul&country. The Pointer Sisters, Otis Williams, Brook Benton, Bobby Hebb, Solomon Burke, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Staple Singers, Carla Thomas, Esther Phillips, etc
thanks a lot!
thanks!
Definitely check out Brian Owens's "Soul of Cash" (as in Johnny) album.
WONDERFUL!
Love the call and repeat verses.
Mr. Green can do what Otis Redding, Ray Charles, Dwight Yoakam (just to name a few) do, and cover something & make it totally his own
Natural Elements - Life Ain't Fair
your not alone
wow, nothing like this.
That's exactly what I'm going through
Whatever this man sings he makes his own. I feel small when I hear him. He sings to a higher power. Talent like we will never see again. A true gift from God.
+Maureen Tansey Nice ! my sentiments as well...
Just beautiful Al green
this is a great song and al sings it with grace and think Hank sr. would love it because he wrote and recorded
Has to be one of his most underrated tunes. Just great.
all time favorite greatest history
Make it better Reverend
SIMPLE BEAUTIFUL!
I am crying because I'm so lonesome...Yes, Al Green's songs can bring out the tears! I love every song I've heard of his and I'm sure the ones that I havn't heard. He's always so happy..gotta love him.
Jessie Staley you're not the only one!!
Beautiful, beautiful great Al Green my tears flowing like rain .love you Al.
This isn't Al Green's song, this is Hank Williams the grandfather of country music.
The only person who could cover Hank Williams and make it his own.
Brian Rise: Check out Bernadette Peter's cover. Pretty amazing performance!
One of the greatest
I could cry when I listen to the sound of Al Green's voice.
Even when he covers other people's songs he's Awesome !..
A handful of artists have not only a totally unique style, but also just seem like a force of nature when they perform. Al Green is one of those very select few.
I pity the fools that dishsuch classic Beautiful song beautiful soul Al Green forever
This is an awesome rendition!
The most perfect tribute song for Robin Williams....
Awe maaannnn.... you comment even made sadder.... :-/..... poor Robin.....
Oh Wow! What a great version!
Wonderful I like this version best
no song ever spoke to the blues to wider spectrum this this song
touching
Sounds cool but Hank Williams original country version is still the saddest song I've heard.
Big Hank fan here, but I gotta say Mississippi John Hurt had played that song long before Hank. And really, Mississ probably didn't write the song himself, its probably just been passed down from player to player. Either way they are all great versions.
@Kai Norman
cough... Bullshit!
1977 ... In my father's car, was about 6 years old, and heard this song on the tape deck ... To 6 years and could not stop listening to it. How I love this song today! Pure Soul! Soul in the blood!
Damn, the man is GREAT...Elvis version sucked ass
Bull! This is almost as good as Hank.
life ain't fair....
TO MUCH SOUL!
@zebop that doesn't say shit. Mrs. Hank Williams was a not talented cheat that made money after Sr's death over his back. Terrible woman without any understanding for music, not even Hank's
Hank would be proud! :)
Zick Scitt Swinn .
God DAMN this is a beautiful song. I just wish this could be played on the radio more then one direction, or whatever garbage is on top 40.
hahahhahahahahaha good one bro hahahahhaha
When I first moved to New York I couldn't find a local station playing this kind of music. This is the song I was looking for. Thanks for posting.
I love the original Williams version, but Green makes it his own and I love this version just as much.
Not bad, not bad at all, BUT, its not quite up to the rich silky sweet baritone of the KING. now is it? Elvis had a voice like a fine red wine, and when Elvis sings it, you feel the emotions. Al Green is ok, but, he fails to move me. His vocal gymnastics leave me cold and un-interested.
Sit down, somewhere. Even Mrs. Hank Williams liked this one.
This song is sung so masterfully that it pierces down to your soul Elvis could not shake a stick Rev. Al on this song!!!!
Natural Elements - Life Ain't Fair
then Hank Williams is not your favorite.....
Hank William's is my favorite, but holy shit this is beautiful.
@ YouthsTribal.....I agree! Music was from the heart and had meaning. Music was beautiful.
i miss the days when good music like this was the order of the day. Music was misic, music was good. The days when music hit the soul! Bless up Mr. Green!!!
im a young teen and i was listening to i heart radio classical music. and i found the beautiful and true meaning of music <3 like this
@dreyrincon what does that make Chuck?
mmmmmmmmm music
It's always some illiterate troll (@ dreyrincon) that doesn't have anything better to do than troll every site and spew hate to get a rise out of people. What a sad, sad life. You should use your free time to take some classes in English: In your sentence, it should be "you morons" (or "you're morons"), not "your morons." Actually, YOU are the one that's a dumb moron.
Elvis is the king, your morons
@tomeka1971 daaaaaaamn skippy!
al and Elvis you can't beat them!!!
@SteelguitarLane What about Nick Cave & Johnny Cash?
