Agnes Obel - Mary Lyrics

Heaven hid her face as we fell down
Age old habits echoed in the ground
One would sing and one would hold me down
They might listen if I make no sound

Oh I know this
From my high school heart
That nothing is over
From a touch it will begin
Wide on the sky

In my house the silence rings so loud
Under doorways, through the hallway down
Waiting for the secret to grow out
All we do when no one is around

Oh I know this
From my high school heart
That nothing is over
From a touch it will begin
Wide on the sky

In the dark I hear you sing
Fingers move and chords they ring
Be the witness of my shame
Swaying in the summer rain
Feathers falling from your wing

In the dark I hear you sing
Fingers move and chords they ring
Be the witness of my shame
Swaying in the summer rain
Feathers falling from your wing

In the dark I hear you sing

Agnes Obel Mary Comments
  1. Nettie Kay

I’m so curious about the inspiration for this song. “The things we do when no one is around”, “be the witness to my shame”. It’s heartbreaking.

  2. Raphael D'Antona

    Thank you, Agnes.

  3. sevenphotographical

Thank you for all the music you make Agnes, just know you are helping someone through brutally unspeakable grief, in my dark world, the sound of your music is a much needed little light.

  4. Seja Sama

Just keep wondering the meaning of the words. It really gives the feeling of something delicate got fractured and defiled by something dark, but nevertheless I might be totally wrong. "Heaven hid her face as we fell down" / "One would sing and one would hold me down", do I even dare to ask what happened there.

    Nettie Kay

Seja Sama I’ve been wondering too

  5. Rado Falko

Perfection! The fade out is reminiscent of the Sugar Man by Rodgriguez but in a completely different mood.

  6. Celtic Progeny

'They might listen if I make no sound'

  7. Rivacks Morais

The beginning remembers me the song Bel Air - Lana Del Rey

  8. Bruna Silva

Esse álbum é bem "fraquinho" comparado aos demais. Gosto mto da era Aventine. Agnes não nos abandone

  9. cheffster

It's amazing how a simple change to the key/melody at 3:02 divides the song into two parts that together creates the most
    mesmerizing chilling feel

  10. NICO And The Niners

    Incroyable...

There is great beauty in the sadness of this song, and it even gets better in the second half when the melody changes, and fades away in the end.

  22. Aline Lima Da Silva

    Tô amando essa cantora.

  23. AmonRa1081

I wonder if this song is about THE Mary. The lyrics seem to give me that impression but they are not overt. That's the sign of truly brilliant music.

  36. World United Music

The album "Citizen of Glass" is an empathic journey that begins with a subtle presence gently absorbing ones essence, to cradle the spark of life at the core of ones being. The album holds the listener in a healing matrix well into the moments after the soft angelic tones of Agnes Obal’s voice slowly echoes into far off silence. I have the LP on repeat. The entire album is simply magical and pleases the senses like no other I have heard. An empathic experience not to be missed ~ World United Music - Favorite track: Mary.

  43. Charles Lower

Anyone else think a collaboration with Danny Elfman would be interesting?

  44. Ntazia Brittingham

Her voice is so hauntingly beautiful, truly like no other. I can't wait to hear her live.

  45. Hannah Joslyn

This is such a hunting song, I hate how people compare Agnes to Lana Del Ray, because in my opinion Agnes is so much better than Lana

    Traumwanderer77

And I hope she does not Sleep with everyone to get famous like Lana did. ;)

    Norglad Mbile

People who compare them just show how little they understand of their art..

    Phillip Paul Bauer

There's some overlap in mood, especially when it comes to big haunting melodies and sk gs that make you feel things you cant name. To me it's more of an emotional sphere they occasionally share. They're very different artists.

    wingsandash

@Stella Rothe Agnes writes her own songs, music and lyrics. She also plays many, if not all of the instruments on her albums. I'm also classically trained, but don't really see any superiority in Lana, who is very souped up, in many ways. I never even thought of the two occupying the same space. But you're right, they don't have to, to each their own, and they can both exist happily in the world.

    taka trip

    no comparison

  53. Cora Wunderlich

I love it. It makes me dreaming.

  54. Keith Bate

Like Low, Lisa gerrard the National and London Grammar, Agnes shows that great music exists in our era .

  55. Keith Bate

the new album really captures the mood of late Autumn and early winter. A feeling of beautiful melancholy around her spidery lyrics.

    Mister CyberBully

I feel the same way. I picture myself in my best outfit walking as the leaves fall.

    ONCLG1 Jack

Keith Bate. I love Acarid WolfgangSpider, looking at me with her beautiful facette Eyelashes whiping my brows, jumping when I take to much to the trays. love Mosaicism spatial tempus

  58. Pou mon

  61. Sara Gaynor Photography

Beautiful, inspirational, just sends shivers throughout.. looking forward to the Birmingham gig

    Keith Bate

and me will look out for you . have a front row seat upstairs !

    Sara Gaynor Photography

Keith Bate how fabulous was the gig, amazing

    Keith Bate

Yes very enjoyable and "Mary" came over very well ditto "The curse", Riverside etc.
The gig reminded me of a London Grammar gig I Saw a few years ago :
Quality songs sung beautifully (by Hannah Reid) and superb musicianship
Well done to Agnes and "her girls"
ps would have loved to have met her afterwards but it was too cold to hang around outside.
pps nice to go to a gig where everyone was trying to film the gig on their phones !!

    Sara Gaynor Photography

Keith Bate yes Mary was amazing.. but tbh it all was, like angels sent to bring sounds from another ethereal otherworld... I can't stop thinking how good it was. emotionally scarred lol.. mobile phone record? nothing like that at the front thank God

    Keith Bate

I was central front row circle.Only saw twp people with mobile phones. The audience was the oldest since I saw the Zombies around 10 years ago (no mobile phones that night)
it was clear the gig was not sold out which is far more unusual these days. Live music seems to be more popular now than even 10+ years ago. Until relatively recently I always used to pay on the door. Wouldn't work nowadays !
ps Agnes surprised me with her wry sense of humour and comments. Would have loved to have seen her a few years ago in the Hare and Hounds pub (said she had played twice at that venue and really liked it)
pps Awful support (IMO) the last track seemed to last longer than war and peace (lol)

  62. Michel Vassail

Mary, une immense mélancolie avec ou sans connotation avec un citoyen de verre... mais qu'est la transparence aujourd'hui ? j'aime énormément.

  68. Tazzy UFO

We need you in New York Rockwood Music Hall 🤘🏼

  69. Michel Vassail
