Against Me! - What We Worked For Lyrics

Lost the confidence to write a song,
So I found three simple chords
And held them together with my weak voice
On an out of tune guitar
My father gave to me.

And may Elvis turn in his grave
And Les Paul kiss my dirty, calloused fingers
And may the likes of this song never make
One fucking dollar,
leave it for a demo tape
To be played until it's broken,
Then remembered only for what it was.

That we gave them hell
That we gave them hell
That we gave them hell

That we gave them hell
That we gave them hell
That we gave them hell

To my friends and enemies who could of been anything,
Titans and heroes who found survival in cause and effect.
Behind counters,
Behind windows,
Striving just
To be people
With bitter ideals of justice.
Do we only need to keep working because it pays rent?
Sleeping under plastic stars glued to ceiling,
Muscles burning alcohol and nicotine
Every morning.

But we gave them hell
But we gave them hell
But we gave them hell

But we gave them hell
But we gave them hell
But we gave them hell

There's a height beyond skyscrapers,
There's a distance beyond the freeway,
More than pictures in a magazine,
More than tragedy in a rock and roll song.
It's more than the actions you know are safe to make.
It's more than money could ever buy.

Are we living to work and die in American cities?
And working to live and die in American cities,
And dying for what we worked.

i feel like all those who feel betrayed by them going comerical.
just rember these were the beliefes of a child who was looking to propaganda and a group of friends. the music didnt change. she is still a lyrical genius. seriuosly hers and as him their music was always and still is a cleverly worded fuck u . they went from agro punk to just themselfs. they dont fit into this anymore. she let go of childhood beliefs and is instead of just sing and being pissed off she has begun to do something about it. she changed her image and is a spokes person for the trans world. i dont like trans g. its weird to me so i preferr my hetro life but the musicnis still bad ass and they still play some of their oldies. but i wouldnt want a diffrent drummer playing We laught a danger. or my favorite pints of g. but let the music ia topicly a lot less fuck you stiff lips and blody noses. like i was in hight school. but still clevelry uses the politics of her fight to be herself and such. but they still melt my face

the other thing is that if we live in this country it's HARD to raise kids without giving into capitalism. she's done amazing and i'm really happy that they have their own record label now, in a way it's sticking it to the expectation that they were going major and never doing anything like this again--they went out on their own and did something completely unique, just like against me always does.

12 years later I still feel deeply betrayed by this band

    Q.... L....

and they felt betrayed by shitty "fans" who couldn't stand they put a record out with Fat, not even a major record label.

    Q.... L....

Very curious, what was the "backstreet boys shat" that they did that you didn't dig on?

    Q.... L....

+Chris Perez It's pretty obvious the answer was "money", they didn't need to write a song to spell that out.

    Q.... L....

+Kenneth Browning That tends to happen when you do a 180 on everything you stood for.

    Q.... L....

Quarter Lore funny u would think if they changed everything abt themselves they wouldnt isolate themselves by being queer and trans, and by continuing anarco-punk style music and politics. fucking wild

I see why they never could've maintained this version of the "band" (It was just the 2 of them, Kevin Mcahon bashing out the drums behind the simple single-guitar tunes Tom threw together to serve as musical vehicles, for the poetry he sketched out beforehand, usually dripping with vitriol and social criticism). So it was inevitable they would've gotten bored of that, added more and more 'regular rock band' members over time, and ended up a much more mainstream and cohesive 'rock and roll' band that still manages to be lightyears ahead of most quote-unquote 'reguo 'rock' bands ever will be in terms of their music having an actual perspective, and a belief behind it, ...and....yeah.

+mywhychromosome So, to wrap up this entirely unnecessary ramble of a post, while I totally recognize their new stuff as important for popular rock, there was something about this brief period in the early days...it felt like the music of outlaws, like communiques from an outlaw group on run, jotted down on the back of a truck stop receipt and then spit into a tape recorder before too much was spent and the man got on their scent. But anyway, good times, great oldies. What do you guys think?

I know you posted this a long-ass time ago. But what you're hearing, my friend, is the essence of a punk band unbridled with expectations or a record contract. Laura was writing on the road frantically through their New Wave and White Crosses tours because they had to put out other albums. They were expected to do something.

You are absolutely right. There is something totally and really special about this version of the band. It's not thinking. Not caring. Not doing it for.... a deadline? Money, sure. Okay. That was part of it. There was always the "just getting by" aspect of it, and that was still getting by. But "just getting by" didn't mean signing a contract. So what if Laura and the rest of them wanted more than that? Kudos. But yes, there is something raw and special and unbridled truth of an angry kid and her guitar.

Their new stuff saved my life. Their old stuff made me realize what the fuck it was worth.

Excellently, and if I do say so, poetically well-put, my friend. Obviously, you were tying in some personal feelings/experiences in there but I feel, like you did a good job representing how anybody who loves this music--who truly GETS it, in their bones--feels. To be honest, I actually haven't followed their most recent releases...is the magic still there? Is it worth diving into?

Transgender Dysphoria Blues has some deep feels in it. Some of them personally so to me, but it definitely has some gut to it. Check out 'Black Me Out' if you haven't already. 'Paralytic States' is my favorite off that album. Shape Shift With Me, their newest album, also has some pretty deep stuff on it. I saw in an interview with Laura that she was kind of writing that album as an escape from working on writing her book (which is fucking fantastic, btw), just writing whatever she felt at that moment. I think it shines through, especially on 'Boyfriend'. It's worth a listen. Now... that being said the band has definitely evolved, but... it still hits a certain note, if not as unpolished and raw as it used to be. It's different. I hope you dig it- I certainly did.

Once a generation there is a band or a song that changes minds, thoughts, or spirits. When my child asks me what i listened to as i asked my father...with that glimmer of pride ill say...this.
