eleven years ago I saw against me play a show in my hometown, hattiesburg, ms. they played all the songs I wanted to hear except for this one, probably because it was pretty new at the time. so when their set ended, I shouted "joy!" as the band was leaving the stage. Laura Jane returned to the stage after a minute and played this song. it was one moment that I will never forget. thank you for that.

Colleen Sullivan my best friend and me saw them in Cincinnati on Oct 3 and there was a wasted dude screaming joy when she came out for the encores and she started chuckling then dedicated two coffins to all the parents and started playing so you're pretty lucky a lot of people were wanting joy to get played but, we did get a petty cover seeing as it was the day after he died

Colleen O'Quin I saw against me last summer, in New Jersey...I feel like mentioning that I’m a non-binary person from Philadelphia is important to add to the story for some reason, but, I was unfortunately going thru a lot during that period of my life, I had a bad drinking problem, struggling with my gender identity, family, friends, relationships, grief, lose, just life...I guess...hm. But, the whole set I was extremely emotional, overcome with pain and anxiety it felt like. I remember grabbing for my friend, but it seemed like they were in pain too. It was a lot at the time. At the end of the set, she came over our direction, and I stupidly remember yelling “hey!” towards her...not cool. I think I caught her off guard, and I regret not being able to possibly have had a moment of solidarity with her. But, maybe next time! I’m glad that you got to share that moment together.

This is a song that makes you feel an uncommon emotion. Hard to describe, and not often conjured up. Wistful, maybe? That's the closest I can get but it's not exactly it.

Is it true that on this album they gave all the songs very simple one-word titles because it was leaked to the public before it was released, and people assigned temporary names to the songs? And people had been giving them shit for having such long song titles before this album? I don't remember where I read that. Anyone know/remember?

Thanks! I lost access to my old account but it's funny to me to come back and listen to this song and see my comment made three years ago. I still love this song, and I did scream drunkenly along to it when I turned 21. I will probably scream along to it next year when I turn 25 too.

This song to me is about finding joy in recovery and a higher power.

I remember when i played this music for my friend for 1 ½ years ago, this music is now something very unique for us. And that's why i'm proud to say that this song brought something special in me, in us. This is probablly one of the best songs ever! I revisited this song and it's really hard to listen to it, such good times there was!
And who knew that my friend turned out to be my girlfriend in the future! <3

you take whatever finger's on the 2nd fret on the G string and move it to the 3rd fret, E string
