AFI - The View From Here Lyrics

So softly spoke the sky, tonight the city dies
(You'll be safe alone)
And then he did confide, black flowers blooming lies
(You'll be safe alone)
So softly I returned, a bow for all I've learned
(You'll be safe alone)
I hung myself up high, where I watched it burn

I'm still alone
I'm still alone
(You'll be safe alone)
I'm still alone

I know, this is, what you wanted
I'd go, just go away
I know, your heart, is my haunted
This ghost will fade away

(So softly spoke the sky, tonight the city dies)

I'm still alone
I'm still alone
(You'll be safe alone)
I'm still alone

AFI The View From Here Comments
  1. S.... A....

    Hi guys

  2. J.... T....

AFI changed my life. My own band was named ATW
This music is Everything to me

  3. A.... L....

    Congratulations!

  4. A.... L....

    😊😊😊😊

  5. M.... R....

If this song was released instead of Miss Murder, we all love to hear it live always every time that they finish a show.

  6. A.... L....

    Чи хтось слухає,цікаво????

  7. A.... L....

Нагадує депеш мод,пісню"heaven",альбом отримав платину,до речі!

  8. A.... L....

    2019???????

  9. A.... N....

And I thought I knew every AFI song and B side and cover, how did this beauty slip past me...

  10. A.... L....

Reminds ofdepeche mode heaven and phoenix days of u2 sunday!love this band

  11. T.... B....

Sometimes I wish this was on DU instead of Murder...

  12. A.... S....

What the shit... how did THIS not make it onto the album???

I don't know, the song structure reminds me a little of Ether... so I suppose that's not the only thing the songs shared.

  13. c.... m....

    Still bleeding..

  14. c.... m....

"I hung myself up high.. where I watched it burn".. fucking awesome..

  15. r.... ....

I'd kill to hear this song live at an AFI show someday.

  16. r.... ....

This is my #1 favorite AFI song of all time. It used to be a tie between Affliction and 37mm until I heard this long time hidden gem a couple of years back. Its sound is very ambient, beautiful and winter like; perfectly defining Decemberunderground for what it truly is: a well put-together, frosty masterpiece.

This would have made a perfect bonus track on the icy clear vinyl set for Decemberunderground (instead of Fallen Like the Sky). Or even better, it could have been a hidden track that plays after a long silent pause at the end of Endlessly, She Said instead.

And has anyone else noticed how the song lasts exactly 3:37 long?

    r.... ....

How is your favorite afi song not from 99-03 though ??. 🤨thats just me

  17. S.... ....

I have been listening to AFI since 1999 and Sing the Sorrow is still their best album artistically. Everyone in the comments is like "Oh he wanted this on Decemberunderground, but instead they put Miss Murder on it", keep in mind all you kids who discovered them through Miss Murder wouldn't even know them if this was the song they put on instead. It's a nice little relaxing track, but by no means is it better than 12/21/Miss Murder, as far as trying to use a song to promote an album.

    S.... ....

I’m forever grateful for Miss Murder. If it weren’t for Decemberunderground I would of never discovered my favorite band. Everything from answer that and stay fashionable up until now will always make me cherish this band.

    S.... ....

It's a valid point, but as a fan of AFI since the same time, I can't agree that the ends justify the means, because the popularity of Miss Murder is also what contributed to a push toward mainstream appeal and away from uniqueness. Sure, said popularity means more people can discover their better material, but it also means their good material is limited to the past.

    S.... ....

@GlamPhantasm If you watch enough Davey Havok interviews it wasn't their labels or management that forced them in that direction. Something happened to Davey Havok Between 2007-2009 and I'm not quite sure what...but he really went a different direction as far as his persona and all that. So, it was more Davey who changed AFI so dramatically than anyone, since he is the heart and soul of the band...which lets be honest, I agree he had more soul pre Crash Love

  18. T.... P....

Holy shit I've never heard this !!

  19. C.... C....

Musically very beautiful. IceCoast36, in case you read (and I don't think you're an AFI member), do you know why this wasn't officially released by the band? Or was it? Were the Pre-Burials videos officially released by the band? I would vote for an age limit to this. And I like the band, as well. Still, glad the "bleak" album came after my teens and I didn't know "The View From Here" as a teen. And I still don't even want to imagine Davey hanging himself up high, which automatically appears to me when he sings that. Is that just me?

  20. x.... P....

Davey said he'd wanted this on the album instead of Miss Murder

    x.... P....

    Can you share that link?

  21. r.... ....

They should have made this a hidden song after Endlessly, She Said.

    r.... ....

rocket83cs That would've been epic. I remember being unreasonably sad that there wasn't a hidden song at the end of DU. We got spoiled on hidden tracks for three albums in a row, so I sort of took it for granted.

    r.... ....

    YES!!!!

    r.... ....

Oh man, tell me about it. I remember when Endlessly, She Said ended and... that was it. Drove me up the wall. That and actually having a lyric sheet to the album. Half the fun at that time was trying to figure out what he was saying, then being hit with either "What? Well... that's random, nice range of vernacular though" or "Wow... just wow. So poetic."

    r.... ....

To be fair, there is the pregap at the beginning of Prelude

  22. L.... E....

This is actually godly holy shit pogChamp

  23. S.... ....

This song is incredible. Musically it is so captivating. Damn I wish they would have indeed included this is Decemberunderground.

  24. A.... S....

Cannot believe that after 9 years of being a fan and thinking that I have heard every song, I have stumbled upon this... This is remarkable work. I would say that it was worth the 9 year wait. I am speechless.

  25. H.... C....

    3:37/337/reincarnation

  26. D.... A....

I truly cannot explain how much I love this

  27. J.... F....

this is a good song. not as interesting as miss murder( who the band was considering leaving off the album for this song) but it holds its ground. i dont know why they didnt add it anyway. they couldve left out 'the killing lights; which was such a garbage filler song.

    J.... F....

Nah, killing lights needs to stay lol - i love the guitar solo on the outro, and the subdued piano ending itself with the soft, fading synths is just beautiful

    J.... F....

killing lights is my favorite song on DU lol.. to each their own though.
I could have done without The Interview, or that weird bit at the end of Affliction in order to fit this in

    J.... F....

Miss Murder is not a very interesting song, it's pretty generic.

    J.... F....

noo, that bit at the end of Affliction is one of my favorite things ever. while i would have loved for this to have been on the album, i literally can’t imagine the album actually having been done any other way.

  28. A.... F....

The moment when you realize Davey wanted this one instead of Miss Murder. Amazing

    A.... F....

Link to that interview please I can't seem to find it

    A.... F....

    Yahoo backspins on Decemberunderground

    A.... F....

So that must mean the other 3 didn’t want it on the album? 🤔

    A.... F....

@Daniel Carabajal I think it was actually the record label that didn't want the song on there. If I'm not mistaken, they wanted Miss Murder instead because it was more accessible to listeners and would give the album more popularity

    A.... F....

Lol definitely here from that interview as well

  29. 1.... ....

    What's this song about?

  30. D.... A....

wow never heard this song before does anyone have an mp3 they could share? <3 :0

  31. C.... C....

Dear IceCoast36, sadly can't pm you here. Thanks for uploading all this great music. I have bought most of AFI's already, but you even have some I don't have yet here. Hope that's all ok for them and we don't need to feel bad for free consumption here and they don't have to starve because of our greedy behaviour.

  32. R.... H....

Let miss Rain hit repeat a few more times kk

  33. R.... H....

    Awe love this guys.

  34. G.... A....

the bass in the beginning reminds me of "this world" by selah sue so much check it out and tell me if you don't agree although is louder in afi's song

  35. R.... R....

This song's so ethereal and beautiful, I love the way all the sounds, heavy reverbs and so on come together with the chord progression and melody to make something magical.

  36. R.... G....

This is suspicious... but I don't see any proof against it being the actual song????????

  37. I.... T....

I feel this is a perfect crash between recent AFI & Decemberunderground AFI. It just feels right. :)

    I.... T....

Too bad the rest of recent AFI isn't like this.

  38. k.... ....

I'm so sure it clocks in at 3:37. Lol

  39. F.... M....

goose bumps..... not more to say!

  40. j.... j....

when did this get released? i know it's unreleased from DU but i've been out of the loop and don't remember its release/leak being announced

  41. s.... ....

The vocals sound very December Underground-ish mixed with Blaqk Audio and some Burials. I think this song could've been a hidden track at the end of The Face Beneath the Waves.

    s.... ....

This song was going to take the place of Miss Murder on December Underground, originally

    s.... ....

Chayse Lavender you're right. just saw an interview with him mentioning that. I love this song, would've loved if it had made the cut

    s.... ....

When you're casually browsing YouTube for AFI stuff and you spot your ol' buddy ol' pal Stallon in the comments section. <3

  42. M.... W....

Can someone explain why the name of the song looks familiar to something I seem before!?!? AND OMG NEW SONG!!!! >__<

  43. e.... ....

So softly spoke the sky, tonight the city dies
    (You'll be safe alone)
And then he did confide, black flowers blooming lies
    (You'll be safe alone)
So softly I returned, a bow for all I've learned
    (You'll be safe alone)
I hung myself up high, where I watched it burn

    I'm still alone
    I'm still alone
    (You'll be safe alone)
    I'm still alone

I know, this is, what you wanted
    I'd go, just go away
I know, your heart, is my haunted
    This ghost will fade away

(So softly spoke the sky, tonight the city dies)

    I'm still alone
    I'm still alone
    (You'll be safe alone)
    I'm still alone

    e.... ....

    Thank you! ^^

  44. J.... S....

Damn, where has this song been hiding?

  45. A.... F....

After all these years...it has seen the daylight

  46. D.... K....

Dear IceCost, could you please send me the original mp3 track? Into mail or something, I'd love to have it in best possible quality and the YT converter doesn't seem to deliver the quality I'd like. Thanks in advance :)

    D.... K....

    youtube-mp3.org

    D.... K....

Yeah, would be nice to get a 320KBPS version at least that hasn't been compressed.

  47. A.... B....

I never, ever comment on Youtube videos, but I've been listening to AFI for years and years, and after hearing this? Mind. Blown. I think this band will always amaze me. The lyrics in this song...goodness... Wish they would have kept the original title though.

    A.... B....

    Autumn Black Original title, being..?

    A.... B....

    The View From Here

    A.... B....

Kylee Trotter naw, I think she meant the rumored title when the EP rumors started swirling, "Chair Kicking," and there was another one that got changed. Either way, TVFH is the superior title imo.

  48. P.... K....

    Sounds like December underground

  49. B.... P....

I think this song must be listened on vinyl. So chamber and smooth!

  50. N.... X....

    Repeat!

  51. W.... ....

I don't fucking believe it... after ALL these years...is this really the legendary View From Here??? I don't recall, were there any lyrics posted, or was every reference from the band just teases?

  52. A.... B....

    ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

  53. N.... P....

I hate not being able to edit blasted comments on Youtube. I was also going to state another bit of lovable Davey personification of tue sky. As always the sky is depicted as uncaring and callous; empty, as God is not there, and if It is it doesn't even register us, and more terrifying still, what if it is and it is toying with ua. XD As for me i have faith that the sky is empty and our true father is our star, Father Sol, it gave mother earth warmth and the cosmos provided the seed. But the sky (God) deatroys the city on a whim (such a meteor could do); It gave but a single soft uttering, one scarely heard statement, "Tonight the city dies."

    N.... P....

    excellent analysis

  54. N.... P....

    Think of it like this.
-So softly spoke the sky, "Tonight the city dies." And then he did confide, "Black flowers bloom in lies."
It's the storm, the chaos of our world, or the chaos of the punk music of his past and perhaps life in general on this rock. The storm of existence can creat black flowers; perhaps the black flower may represent him or artists like him throughout the modern ear.

  55. D.... T....

Anyway to get a download of this? It's fucking excellent.

    D.... T....

    YouTube to mp3 Google that

  56. c.... l....

You know that moment when you think you've heard every song by your favorite band and get really sad because there's nothing new, and BAM RIGHT OUTTA LEFT FUCKING FIELD A SONG YOUVE NEVER HEARD BEFORE AND YOU GET REALLY GIDDY LIKE YOURE 12 YEARS OLD DISCOVERING THEM AGAIN FOR THE FIRST TIME? Yeah, its something like that.

    c.... l....

carson lee AFI seems to have a ton of unreleased/very rare singles that could've easily been the best song on any album they could've been released on. it's kinda crazy that the tradition continues.

    c.... l....

    EXACTLY!

    c.... l....

Davey has 100s of songs we havent heard he did 80 plus while recording the blood album he said in an interview i believe lol.

    c.... l....

    Lol like Synthesia

    c.... l....

Oh no kidding. I just heard Davey mention it in an interview. Leaving me to think "Wait, what? I don't actually think I've heard that one."

  57. U.... ....

I hear bells. Would've placed nicely after Love Like Winter. did i cry? yep.. 🔥😢💕

  58. A.... ....

The words are kinda hard to interpret... but this seems kind of like a bisexual song? Or am i overthinking? lol

    A.... ....

I think he's referring to God

    A.... ....

Thanks now that you mention that it makes sense! I was just confused that is all :)

    A.... ....

@Jennifer Clason i get that from a lot of his songs and that he's referencing God. And how we can feel forsaken. I know he must believe in a higher power but from the looks of it he doesnt worship the most highest, which is our father in heaven. Im a big fan of afi and blaqk audio. I feel like afi has helped me through dark times but i also feel like I should have turned to Jesus. I can relate to some of the lyrics that davey writes. Because its frustrating to be alive in this world and want to know what the point of all this is. I get it

  59. K.... ....

This was recorded during decemberunderground. 2006

  60. N.... O....

This was great! Definitely a different version of AFI from their recent stuff. Sounded like AFI and Blaqk Audio mixed. Where is this from? I loved it! <3

    N.... O....

It sounds blaqkesque because Jade is the man behind the electronic elements. I think he has been since bsits :)

    N.... O....

If you search interviews with Davey Havok, He talks about how they wrote songs like "Love Like Winter" for Blaqk Audio and a couple other songs, but turned them into something more for AFI.

    N.... O....

    blaqkaudio2011

    N.... O....

It does sound a bit like Bliss in parts.

    N.... O....

    Decemberunderground was mixed with electronic.

  61. s.... ....

3:37 in length.....oh boy. Where did you get this IceCoast36? Did you purchase that EP that was on eBay?

  62. k.... ....

    thanks for this ^^

  63. J.... T....

afinewshq got an exclusive gift and they had it up on their website but someone downloaded it and spread it on facebook and other platforms so they took it down from their website but it seems this gentleman got it before it was taken down

  64. R.... G....

    hell yeah!!! love the lyrics

  65. R.... R....

    This song is perfect 😍

  66. b.... ....

this is unreleased from decemberunderground 4 those who dont know

    b.... ....

blaqkaudio2011 I actually didn't know that! I thought I'd heard all the b sides from that album, but apparently not. This actually has a bit of a Blaqk Audio vibe... That dark, kinda moody feel like Cities of Night.

    b.... ....

Yep I thought it was Blaqk Audio. Ô the talent...!

    b.... ....

Definitely should have! This is such a damn great song and would have fit perfectly, such a shame

  67. b.... ....

when did this come out? and wheres chair kicking xD

    b.... ....

It came out last night, and chair kicking as been renamed either The View From Here or Fainting Spells. I can't remember which.

    b.... ....

+kris ohh ok. is there still more unreleased du songs that you know of?

    b.... ....

+blaqkaudio2011 there might be, but I just know that the EP that was never released had some songs that actually ended up on Crash Love. You can check AFINewsHQ website for a list of allegedly unreleased songs.

    b.... ....

I believe...(did a quick search to verify...) back in 07-08 there was a major confusion/controversy over the titles of two DU era songs that went unreleased at the time that were meant for the EP that was never released.

Suicide Romantic, 100 Words, Chair Kicking , Carcinogen Crush, and Ether were, at the very least on that to be released EP

This list given to someone at "The Complete AFI Series" boards apparently had a very reliable source, and we can even see copyright info for these songs mind you, matching up with 100 Words and Carcinogen Crush, which we knew at the time were unreleased STS era songs, and as I recall at the time, the rest were unknown songs at the time. Two that stood out were "Chair Kicking" and "Suicide Romantic" once Ether was released for Crash Love in Japan and also featured in some racing game.

Jade went onto some message board and went onto the record that the tracklisting was incorrect, and two titles were wrong. He set the record straight saying that Chair Kicking and Suicide Romantic were incorrect, and The View From Here and Fainting Spells were their correct names. There was some speculation whether fan reaction to those titles was cause of a last minute change in their names, or if the band themselves just decided to rename them to something else before officially releasing them.

In the end, what we are listening to is Chair Kicking, judging by a line of lyrics in this song. Fainting Spells should be Suicide Romantic. Either way, we have all DU era songs!!!

Look at it this way...336 is another name given to the Now the World Picture Disc, and 336 is mainly used by fans, and is not the legal name of the release, Now The World is. The legal name to The View From Here (at least as of 2008) is Chair Kicking, and Fainting Spells is Suicide Romantic. Hopefully since Fainting Spells was released in 09, they have since officially changed the legal name.

    b.... ....

Thanks a bunch for the extensive info, Goose. Much appreciated.

  68. J.... W....

Seems familiar, Lyrically. Musically, it's nice. Vocally, It's nice. No need to wonder why it wasn't on the album anymore.

  69. P.... C....

    thanks afi!

  70. M.... S....

Thanks for sharing, how do you get this excellent content?
