AFI - The Prayer Position Lyrics

Now! Peel the skin back from the flesh. Steal the flesh back from the starving static minds.
From nature we must stray, to clarity we'll climb.
Deadly impulse seems so natural, just look beyond it and we'll find a brand new evolution.
Here begins a brand new line. And in the distance there's a gathering, that no longer seems so far away.
Pushed to our knees so let us pray, and all together we'll bring the real rain.
Watch all that's wasted wash away, so let it come. Our will be done.
Stature retrieved, regain our form. Break free from instinct that's left us all confined.
From nature we must stray to clarity we'll climb. Tradition ingrained, now impermissible.
Now comes a call for all to find a brand new evolution. Here begins a brand new line.
I can't help but fear, look to my species and tremble, to think that God is just...
And in the distance there's a gathering that no longer seems so far away.

  20. SpookyVonDoom

That's funny because Jade was on this album...

  21. SpookyVonDoom

A real fan can acknowledge that not every song has to be good for the band to be good. Dafuq bruh?

  22. Bad Habit

    Dexter Holland Rules !!

  23. janes642

I wish they'd just drop the all white costumes and stop all they're excessive stage antics and just Fucking ROCK again!!!... This song has got to be one of their heaviest athems bring back Mike! Jade's just to0 much of a wuss on lead he can play back up

    Damián Ojeda

    1: his name was mark.
    2: Jade wrote this

    Bastard Mike

jade fucking shreds on lead. he always could. like AFI was ever about shredding like that.

    Rodney King

lol Jade was in Redemption 87 and AFI. Dude wrote slappers.

  24. CountDruckula

Cool haha, the more you listen to this album the better it gets IMO

  25. TheGabsterella

    I did it's awesome! :D

  26. TheGabsterella

It's great! I was home alone for a whole week so I got to listen to it over and over without my Mom telling me to turn it down, haha.

  27. WILLIE PRICE

Not a true fan unless you appreciate ALL of their work? Who made that rule? Sounds like just another version of how someone thinks things should be.

  28. Cassafinn

I'm not saying I know what this song is about, but it's not hard to believe it would be a religious critique considering how harsh davey is on religion in other songs.

  29. Cassafinn

What makes you think they were following trends? With this many people clamoring for them to go back to their old stuff I don't think they would have had any difficulty 'staying in business' if they were to keep on keeping on. I'm pretty sure they just changed because they wanted to.

  30. Cassafinn

    A-Fuckin'-men

  31. slypjOGh00dnigga

Yeah you're probably one of the few.

  32. Rua Kitsune

Am I the only person who likes this AFI and their new songs (and Blaqk Audio)? I just love Davey's voice and the messages in the songs. :3

  33. Dale Simcoe

    i hope you loved it!

  34. CountDruckula

    What'd ya think about it?

  35. TheGabsterella

I bought this album today without knowing a single song on it. Recently became an AFI fan, so thought I'd give it a try. :)

  36. xXEnkilXx

We all do. I fear he's retired in favor of poppy Davey.

  37. Dinba

Yeah, right in my right ear!

  38. beefandkimchee

@3:10 Dexter Holland from The Offspring

  39. 777xdanx777AxFxIx

most of the verse is one chord, but it sounds so fucking very good

  40. Black Knight

u guys r stupid. just shut the fuck up no one cares about ur opinion

  41. Dillinger R.

It seems to be Davey expressing his opinion on religion and how people just follow it because they are told to.

  42. Stephanie St.Lawrence

This song is about separating ones self form religion, Atheism means without theism the song eludes to "a God" so there for its not about being atheists, its about realizing everything we where thought about religion, is humanity and that some of us need to stray from them and rise higher and understand more then those who are still naive.

  43. Mrlaneyful

    WRONG!!

  44. SOULisFAR

This song is about circumcisions...cut the skin from the flesh, blank starving minds...I considered slavery, but that has more holes in its rational. Listen, think circumcision. Coneheads unite!!!

  45. xXEnkilXx

    LYRICS IN DESCRIPTION!!!

  46. PixelAndrew

    FINALLY! SOMEONE NOTICED!

  47. xXEnkilXx

That's the thing, though: the full scope of AFI's talent IS punk rock. I appreciate the transition into a more poppy kind of band, because when you want to make it in the music industry, you have to look at it like a business and follow trends to stay afloat. Even still, I just can't listen to their new stuff. DU is so dramatically different from older AFI albums, that you can expect hardcore fans of their old style to take it as a slap to the face and start raging.

  48. CthulhuDarkLord

God damn it, I have to say it again... If you can't appreciate all of their work you aren't a fan, you are therefore not an AFI fan. So don't listen to their music, or at the least keep your damn crybaby mouth shut about how they've changed. ALL AFI is good, every single song.

  49. CthulhuDarkLord

Now by real fans you mean people who can appreciate the full scope of their talents and not just sit on their hardcore/punk rock purist high horses and keep their ears covered and repel new varieties of music right?

  50. Jacob Matthew

@513986916 Well, at a glance, it could be about atheism, but I agree with clefiance that it's more about improving social behavior, or something along those lines. It's kind of ambiguous.

  51. clefiance

@tcktrc couldn't agree more!!! everyone always see's atheism in this song. to me it is a commentary on social decay and a call for personal improvement.

  52. tcktrc

@ColtonMcBonesHeil And you get that from the word prayer in the title? I think this is a much more abstract song about the narrator's displeasure at the world and the direction its heading. The prayer is more a symbol of his wish to 'wash away' what he views as bad things. You'd have to stretch the themes in this song was past reason to get to some sort of religious critique.

  53. Jacob Matthew

@ColtonMcBonesHeil It sure does seem like it...

  54. alyozombieface

    love old AFFFIII

  55. RCA510

    Good ol East Bay Hardcore!!!

  56. notyoursavior78

    @Abercrombieand1Bitch

It's an alcoholic mixed shot. I'm pretty sure these guys are more straight edge, but yeah I'm not.

  57. Sean Denizen

    @notyoursavior78 Jagerbombs?

  58. Sean Denizen

    @iYaoiPanda Lets hope so...

  59. Sean Denizen

@absurd207 Many songs on the album do.

  60. absurd207

this has dexter from the offspring in it

  61. Sean Denizen

    @iYaoiPanda Damn straight...

  62. notyoursavior78

Just did Jagerbombs with friends here to this. Good stuff!

  63. Sean Denizen

    @jafsica THANK GOD!
I always thought it would be this bad...

  64. Sean Denizen

@jafsica Same, cept it's middle school, I'm still in it, and I"m pretty sure I won't survive it.

    I hate people...

  65. soccerguy012

aaaaaaaaaaaaaand in the distance there's a gatheriiiiiiiiiing that no longer seems so far AWAY

  66. Jacob Matthew

As much as I like old AFI I think DecemberUnderground is really good! It has a mood-setting thing about it...

  67. ScinLaeca358

@jafsica Yeah I mention Thrice because they're basically a Christian band, which as everybody knows means they suck - I mean of course they don't even cop to it, it's just all their songs are super-Christiany and full of Bible verses like fucking Evanescence. So to see them pop up when I buy a song about how religion is mental slavery makes me laugh. This CD takes me back to freshman year in college...it's like the sound of me having fun when I was 18, plus the lyrics of course reign.

  68. ScinLaeca358

@jafsica Seriously. What I love is that when I bought this on iTunes it recommended fucking Thrice...lol

  69. willbirkin666

@xBlaqkWingsx yeah thats why id didnt go to the greenday show one i dont like greenday and 2 they werent gonna play a very long show worth my money but i agree during december underground touring his voice was bad off even on the i heard a voice dvd i was like what cause when i saw them live 3 times last year he was way better then the recorded long beach show wasnt as scratchy when he screamed.

  70. EndlesslyDxH

@sansdeity420 Yes I was around :) I'm a real true fan and like I said they're all equal. Love ALL OF AFI from the beginning til.........(there's no end) so, FOREVER!!!! :D

  71. Veronika M

@willbirkin666 Two Augusts ago, but they opened for Green Day and played their hits starting from Sing the Sorrow. He kind of screamed in Dancing Through Sunday, but it wasn't as intense the album version.
I only read about his throat surgery on the DF boards. I'd love the opportunity to see them live and watch them play more of their older songs.

  72. willbirkin666

@xBlaqkWingsx whens the last time youve seen them live I have to ask cause he sure does scream love is a many splendored thing and death of seasons just fine and this was last year i saw them.

  73. EndlesslyDxH

my opinion is if you're a REAL TRUE AFI FAN you will love the new stuff as much as the older stuff :D I KNOW I DO!!!!

  74. Kyle Hansen

there is nothing out there that can compare to the power of this album

  75. Veronika M

Davey CAN'T yell like he used to anymore, seeing as how he's had surgery on his throat and his voice changed. It's sad, but we do still have many great albums, compared to their newer material. Despite many fans' disapproval they continue to do what they love. Amazing.

  76. Vanessa Murillo

    great song (: thanx benji madden 4 bringin me here (;

  77. michael bearss

    miss the bangs

  78. DC Posner

@rriperr1991 Well said! Answer That and Stay Fashionable is my favorite punk album of all time. :D

  79. Tsvetan Iliev

@rriperr1991 I gotta say AFI is actually one of the most talented bands out there. The instrumental part is great, albeit nothing THAT special.......however the lyrics...oh my god the lyrics

    Most amazing words ever

  80. Gabriel Pasini

One of my favorite songs in my favorite AFI Album ever!

  81. WasBMOC

This song has always been a favourite of mine.

  82. Shane LeRoy

@thehumanbirdie REAL AFI fans = awesome people.

  83. Adam McWilliams

Sorry but since Davey Havok has had an issue with his voice, AFI has lost its power, they are rather emo, but I think this is planned anyways, they did say they are disappointed in every ass hole who has a full sleeve and would not have done so themselves if every jack ass did the same. They probably realized that no matter what they do it would have a large following.

I love AFI no matter what from Answer that and Stay Fashionable through today they are my favorite. Rock on Shits awesome.

  84. edroivas

Davey Havok doesn't scream anymore. His voice broke. You don't hear any screaming on Crash Love song.

  85. Hirsch Patel

    @Mswolfhugger
that would be a waste of time!
i'd rather listen to more afi songs :P

  86. nelsen esser

@HxC4life11 have you even heard their new shit?

  87. xavier miles

    @HxC4life11 theyre not... even close....

  88. Mswolfhugger

Everybody!!!! My afi poeples!!! Go to "baby oh" now and flag it as innapropriate, or dislike it!!! Then we will slowly bring justin beieber off the web for good!! ( lmao this is corny :p) so, my afi fellows, we shall ALL untite as afi fans and bring the "beaver" DOWN!!

  89. liam smith

@GreyShadowUchiha all opinions isn't it, however its very nice to see your comment isn't insulting just because you dont agree with it, at least not eveyone on youtube is a dick :)

  90. eric turner

dexter hollands sneaky backin vocals make me crease my nutsack

  91. liam smith

@GreyShadowUchiha i prefer answer tht lol just my opinion tho

  92. yugoterror

one of my favourite songs from afi

  93. Eric Kanis

    @AFIfan96 yeahhh! _\,,/

  94. yugoterror

@UnitedWeDivide how are the backing vocals cheesy, cant find many punk bands that dont excessively use backing vocals. u obviously have bad taste in music

  95. tommW13

    JUST ENJOY THE MUSIC

  96. thereisnospectrum

My favorite song on the album, pumps me up. Not many afi songs get me ready for sports, it's weird I'm a hiphop kid born and raised on it. This is the only rock artist/group I keep up w/. Theyr music can transcend to other tastes of music

  97. SHILL GATES

Davey is too fucking good at screaming to not be doing that on at least 3 tracks out of every album.....Kill Caustic is amazing.....

  98. Joey Is So Joey

regarding everyone who utters the word sell-out: while Black Sails is the pinnacle of pure musical expression, think of all the impurities that music today forces upon its artists. in order to get any airplay at all bands must subscribe to the way of the sheep; which demand predictable, American Idol like, generic, kareoke trash. So, compared to a Daughtry album, be satisfied with December Underground and Crash Love...because, in comparison, it's some of the last real fucking music left.
